Development of the film was reported in January 2024, and had been underway for some time. Edwards was hired as director a month later, and casting commenced shortly thereafter. Principal photography took place in Thailand, Malta and the United Kingdom from June to September 2024.

Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to be released in the United States by Universal Pictures on July 2, 2025.

Plot summary

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion , the planet's environment has shown itself to be mainly inhospitable to dinosaurs. The survivors now live in remote tropical regions with conditions similar to those in which they were formerly abundant. Zora Bennett, a covert operative, is hired to work with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis and team leader Duncan Kincaid on a top-secret mission. Their goal is to locate the three largest creatures within the tropics and acquire their DNA, which contains the key to a drug that will miraculously save human lives. The team crosses paths with a civilian family whose boating adventure was overturned by roving aquatic dinosaurs, leaving them all stranded on an island where they must confront a terrifying, ominous revelation that has been kept secret from the world for decades. Production

Jurassic World Rebirth was written by David Koepp, who also wrote the first two films, Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). He initially turned down the chance to write another installment, believing he had nothing left to contribute to the series. [4] [5] He was still consulted for subsequent films, [6] [7] and eventually did uncredited script work on Jurassic World Dominion (2022). [8] Director and writer Colin Trevorrow, who spent nine years working on the Jurassic World trilogy, said he would likely not return for another film, except in a possible advisory role. [9]

Development on Jurassic World Rebirth began when executive producer Steven Spielberg asked Koepp about returning to write a new film in the series, which led to an exchange of ideas. Koepp also reread Michael Crichton's novel Jurassic Park (1990) and its sequel The Lost World (1995), incorporating concepts from both books. [10]

Pre-production

In late January 2024, it was reported that a new Jurassic World film was in development by Universal Pictures. [11] Like the previous Jurassic World films, the new installment would be produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley through The Kennedy/Marshall Company, while Spielberg would return as executive producer through Amblin Entertainment. [11] [12] The film will be a completely new take. The actors from the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World trilogies, namely Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, were not expected to return. [11] [13]

Development of the project had been underway for some time, [11] [14] with several drafts already written by Koepp. [12] The producers had also done some pre-production work, including dinosaur designs, meaning that any creative input from the eventual director would be minimal. [12] [15] The position was reportedly described as being "more shooter than auteur", as the producers seek to have more creative control than Dominion, [12] which earned mostly negative reviews. [16] With Rebirth, Spielberg and Koepp wanted to return the series to the tone of the Jurassic Park trilogy, particularly the first film. Aside from the inclusion of dinosaurs, Koepp had no story requirements to follow, although he did compile a list of rules for himself; among these was that the film be based on accurate science and that it not retcon any events from the previous films. [17] Paleontologist Stephen Brusatte returns from Dominion as a dinosaur consultant. [18]

David Leitch was briefly in talks to direct the film during early February 2024, [19] but negotiations broke down after several days, [20] as the project's progress up to that point left little room for his creative input. [12] [21] Gareth Edwards was announced as director later that month. [22] Spielberg enjoyed Edwards' Godzilla (2014) and Edwards is a fan of the original Jurassic Park. [16] [23] Edwards had planned to take a break from studio filmmaking and was busy writing a new film when he was offered the Jurassic World project, which he described as "the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in". [22]

Casting was underway in March 2024, and continued over the next three months. Scarlett Johansson, [24] Jonathan Bailey, [25] Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, [26] Rupert Friend, [27] Mahershala Ali, [28] Luna Blaise, [29] David Iacono, [30] Audrina Miranda, [31] and Béchir Sylvain eventually joined the project. [32] Johansson is a fan of the franchise and had wanted to join it for more than a decade. [33] Jennifer Lawrence had been in consideration for the role that ultimately went to Johansson. [34] Glen Powell, who voiced Dave in the animated series Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), turned down a role. [35]

Filming

Principal photography began in Thailand on June 13, 2024 under the working title Saga [36] [37] with filming lasting a month in the country. [38] [39] On-set locations include Khao Phanom Bencha National Park in Krabi, [40] Ko Kradan at Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang, and Ao Phang Nga National Park in Phang Nga. [41] Filming then moved to the Malta Film Studios in Kalkara, Malta in July 2024. [42] Some stunts were filmed in a tank, and ocean footage was shot on the nearby Mediterranean Sea, the latter was described by Edwards as a "very difficult" experience. [2] In August 2024, [43] filming moved to London and Sky Studios Elstree in the United Kingdom, [44] [45] [46] before wrapping on September 27, 2024. [47] Some reshoots were made in New York City in October. [48] John Mathieson served as the cinematographer. [49]

Release

Jurassic World Rebirth is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 2, 2025. [19] [11]

<i>Jurassic Park</i> American science fiction media franchise

Jurassic Park, later also referred to as Jurassic World, is an American science fiction media franchise created by Michael Crichton and centered on a disastrous attempt to create a theme park of cloned dinosaurs. It began in 1990 when Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment bought the rights to Crichton's novel Jurassic Park before it was published. The film received a theatrical 3D re-release in 2013, and was selected in 2018 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Crichton's 1995 sequel novel, The Lost World, was followed by a 1997 film adaptation, also directed by Spielberg. Crichton did not write any further sequels in the series, although Spielberg would return as executive producer for each subsequent film, starting with Jurassic Park III (2001).

Production of the 2015 film Jurassic World was stalled for years in development hell while the film's storyline underwent numerous revisions. Development of the film, known then as Jurassic Park IV, began in 2001. William Monahan was announced as screenwriter in 2002, and the film was scheduled for a 2005 release. When Monahan left to work on another project, he was replaced in 2004 by John Sayles. By 2005, the start of production had stalled, as executive producer Steven Spielberg was not satisfied with any of the script drafts. In 2006, Jurassic Park III director Joe Johnston was set to direct the film. After missing a 2008 release, Johnston and Spielberg intended to work on the film following the completion of their own respective film projects. Writer Mark Protosevich was hired in 2011, although two story treatments by him were rejected.

Malcolm is a secondary protagonist in the original novel and the main protagonist in the sequel, The Lost World, due to positive fan reception from Goldblum's performance as the character in director Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of the original novel.
