In 2010, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division One of the County Championship, Group C of the 40-over Clydesdale Bank 40 and the South Group of the Friends Provident t20. Kent also hosted three-day first-class matches at the St Lawrence Ground against Loughborough MCCU and the touring Pakistanis. It was the first season in charge for Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace. [1] The club captain was former England batsman Rob Key who had been club captain since 2006. Kent's overseas players were South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini until late May, [2] and Sri Lankan leg-spinner Malinga Bandara for the rest of the season. [3]

Contents

Kent were relegated from Division One of the County Championship in their first season since promotion from Division Two. They finished second in Group C of the Clydesdale Bank 40 and seventh in the South Group of the Friends Provident t20 (they did not progress to the knock-out stages of either competition).

Squad

It was announced in December 2009 that former South Africa batsman Justin Kemp would not return for the 2010 season due to changes to the Kolpak regulations under which he had been able to play county cricket since 2005. [4] Kent had already lost fast bowler Martin Saggers after 11 seasons, when the player announced his retirement at the end of the 2009 season due to a serious knee injury. [5]

In January, Kent announced that their overseas player would be Australian fast bowler Stuart Clark for the first half of the season, [6] followed by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Malinga Bandara for the second half of the season. [3] Clark had previously signed to play for Kent in the 2009 season, [7] but later withdrew due to a late call up to the Australian tour of South Africa. [8] However, in March 2010 it was announced that, for a second time, Clark would not play for the county – this time due to concerns about his fitness. [9] A week later, Kent announced the signing of South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini as a replacement for Clark. Ntini signed a five-week deal to play until Bandara arrived in late May. [2]

South African-born Scotland international, Dewald Nel, signed a two-year contract with Kent in March 2010 after impressing while on trial. [10]

Leg-spin bowler Mark Lawson (cricketer) signed for Kent during the season and played a single match (against the touring Pakistanis), but was later released. [11]

In late July, Kent released slow left-arm spinner Rob Ferley 22 year-old medium-fast bowler Warren Lee). [12] Lee would go on to play for the Unicorns (cricket team) in 2012 and 2013. A few days later, Kent released James Hockley from his second spell with the county. [13] Hockley would now concentrate on his teaching career. Phil Edwards was released in late August. [14]

Fast bowler Amjad Khan left Kent at the end of the 2010 season to join Sussex, having been at the county since 2001. [15] Second XI wicket-keeper Paul Dixey also left after the end of the season and signed for Leicestershire.

Lasith Malinga Sri Lankan cricket bowler

Malinga captained the Sri Lankan 2014 T20 World Cup winning side and he is the highest wicket taker in IPL. Malinga is a right-arm fast bowler that is commonly used as a specialist death bowler, and is well known for his distinctive round-arm action, sometimes referred to as a sling action, which leads to his nickname "Slinga Malinga". Warwickshire County Cricket Club start 2005 as defending county champions and 11–4 favourites to retain their title. They play their totesport League cricket in Division Two. Warwickshire won the title in 2004 through their batting, and they have further enhanced it with the addition of Alex Loudon.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club in 2005 are playing their cricket in Division One of both the County Championship and totesport League. They started the Championship at 18–1 to win it, and as one of the teams most likely to be relegated from it. So they were—only their five draws prevented them from finishing bottom, and they were the only team to lose to bottom-placed Glamorgan. By the end of August, they were relegated, with three games to spare. In the National League, they were never better than sixth at any time during the season, and lost three games in succession to be ninth before the final round of matches. They won their last match, but were still relegated due to a worse net run rate than Lancashire. They were thus the first club to suffer double relegation since Leicestershire in 2003. Their Twenty20 and C&G Trophy campaigns ended almost as early as they could have done—Gloucestershire did get past the first round of the C&G Trophy, beating Berkshire, but were knocked out by Surrey.

Mfuneko Ngam is a South African cricketer who played three Tests for South Africa in the 2000–01 season. However, stress fractures in his legs allowed him to play only five first-class matches between January 2001 and October 2003, and after his return he was unable to regain his place in the national team. The cricket news site Cricinfo reported that these injuries may be due to genetic disorders or a dietary deficiency at a young age.

Herath Mudiyanselage Charitha Malinga Bandara, commonly known as Malinga Bandara, is a former Sri Lankan cricketer, who played all formats. He is a right-handed batsman and also bowls legbreaks. He studied at the Kalutara Vidyalaya.

The 2009 season saw Kent County Cricket Club competing in four competitions; the Second Division of the County Championship, the Friends Provident Trophy, the second division of the Pro40 League and the Twenty20 Cup. It was the county's first ever season in the second tier of the County Championship, following their relegation at the end of the 2008 season.

In cricket, a hat-trick occurs when a bowler takes three wickets with consecutive deliveries. The deliveries may be interrupted by an over bowled by another bowler from the other end of the pitch or the other team's innings, but must be three consecutive deliveries by the individual bowler in the same match. Only wickets attributed to the bowler count towards a hat-trick; run outs do not count.

Nathan Lyon Australian cricketer

Nathan Michael Lyon is an Australian international cricketer. He made his Test debut in 2011 and plays domestic cricket for New South Wales. Lyon is an off spin bowler and a lower-order right-handed batsman. As of June 2020, Lyon is the 16th-ranked Test bowler and 20th-ranked Test all-rounder in the world, according to the ICC Player Rankings. Considered the most successful off-spin bowler for Australia, Lyon holds the record for the most Test wickets taken by an Australian off-spin bowler, passing Hugh Trumble's 141 wickets in 2015. In January 2021, Lyon played in his 100th Test match during Australia's series against India.

In 2014, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, Group B of the 50-over Royal London One-Day Cup and the South Group of the NatWest t20 Blast. Kent also hosted a first-class match at the St Lawrence Ground against Loughborough MCCU at the start of the season. It was the third season in charge for head coach Jimmy Adams. The club captain was former England batsmen Rob Key, who resumed the captaincy after James Tredwell had spent one season in the role. Australia bowler Doug Bollinger signed for the club for the 2014 season. Other new additions to the squad included fast bowlers Mitchell Claydon – who had a load spell with Kent in 2013 – from Durham, David Griffiths from Hampshire and former Kent player Robbie Joseph.

In 2013, Kent County Cricket Club competed in Division Two of the County Championship, Group A of the 40-over Yorkshire Bank 40 and the South Group of the Friends Life t20. Kent also hosted a first-class match at the St Lawrence Ground against Cardiff MCCU at the start of the season and a T20 match against the touring New Zealanders in June. It was the second season in charge for head coach Jimmy Adams. The club captain was England spinner James Tredwell, taking over from Rob Key who had been club captain since 2006. Brendan Nash registered as a Kolpak player, ending his West Indies international career, which allowed Kent to sign another overseas player. South African fast bowler Vernon Philander filled this role, although he was only with the club for a short spell in July.
