An engineering society is a professional organization for engineers of various disciplines. Some are umbrella type organizations which accept many different disciplines, while others are discipline-specific. Many award professional designations, such as European Engineer, professional engineer, chartered engineer, incorporated engineer or similar. There are also many student-run engineering societies, commonly at universities or technical colleges.

In Canada, the term "engineering society" sometimes refers to organizations of engineering students as opposed to professional societies of engineers. The Canadian Federation of Engineering Students, whose membership consists of most of the engineering student societies from across Canada (see below), is the national association of undergraduate engineering student societies in Canada.

Canada also has many traditions related to the calling of an engineer.

In the Philippines, the Professional Regulation Commission is a three-man commission attached to the office of the president of the Philippines. Its mandate is to regulate and supervise the practice of professionals (except lawyers) who constitute the highly skilled manpower of the country. As the agency-in-charge of the professional sector, the PRC plays a strategic role in developing the corps of professionals for industry, commerce, governance and the economy.

In the United Kingdom, the Engineering Council is the regulatory body for the engineering profession. The Engineering Council was incorporated by Royal charter in 1981 and controls the award of chartered engineer, incorporated engineer, engineering technician, and information and communications technology technician titles, through licences issued to thirty six recognised Institutions. There are also 19 professional affiliate institutions, not licensed, but with close associations to the Engineering Council.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is the national academy for engineering.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution. The Engineering Council is the UK's regulatory authority for registration of Chartered and Incorporated engineers and engineering technician. The Engineering Council holds the national registers of over 228,000 Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng), Chartered Engineers (CEng) and Information and Communications Technology Technicians (ICTTech). The Engineering Council is also responsible for establishing and upholding globally acknowledged benchmarks of professional competence and ethical conduct, which govern the award and retention of these titles. This guarantees that employers, government bodies, and the broader society, both within the UK and abroad, can place their trust in the expertise, experience, and dedication of engineers and technicians who are professionally registered with the Engineering Council.

Mepco Schlenk Engineering College is an autonomous engineering college located in Virudhunagar near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded on 17 October 1984. It is an ISO9001:2015 certified institution. It is sponsored by the Mepco Schlenk Charities, a social welfare organization of the Metal Powder Company Limited, Thirumangalam and its German collaborator, Schlenk. The college was affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai until 2002 and later with Anna University, Chennai, but since 2012 it has been affiliated with Anna University of Technology, Chennai.

Santa Clara University School of Engineering was founded and began offering bachelor's degrees in 1912. Over the next century, as the Santa Clara Valley transformed from a largely agricultural area to an industrial center, the school added master and doctoral programs designed to meet the area's growing need for expert engineers. Today, the Silicon Valley provides a setting for the school's programs offered through a broad range of departments.

Engineering education is the activity of teaching knowledge and principles to the professional practice of engineering. It includes an initial education, and any advanced education and specializations that follow. Engineering education is typically accompanied by additional postgraduate examinations and supervised training as the requirements for a professional engineering license. The length of education, and training to qualify as a basic professional engineer, is typically five years, with 15–20 years for an engineer who takes responsibility for major projects.

In the United Kingdom, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) is an engineer registered with the UK's regulatory body for the engineering profession, the Engineering Council. Chartered Engineers are master's degree qualified or must demonstrate equivalent masters level, work-based learning. The appropriate professional competencies must be demonstrated through education, further training and work experience. Significant experience is required which invariably spans several years of postgraduate professional practice. Demonstration of competence is defined in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence, assessed through professional review of academic qualifications and professional development. Formal, non-formal and informal learning can be assessed. The title Chartered Engineer is protected in the UK under law by means of the Engineering Council’s Royal Charter and Bye-laws. As of 2019 there are approximately 180,000 engineers registered as a Chartered Engineer. Chartered Engineers are registered through Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs) licensed by the Engineering Council which are relevant to their industry or specialism. The total process of formation of a Chartered Engineer including MEng typically spans at least 8-10 years, although 12+ years is not uncommon to satisfy all of the competency requirements.

Engineering Council of India (ECI) is a statutory professional body responsible for regulation and licensing of engineering profession in India. It is under the ownership of Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India It was established on 4 April 2002 by Government of India to work for the advancement of engineering profession in various disciplines and for enhancing the image of engineers in society, by focusing on the quality and accountability of engineers. The headquarters of ECI is in New Delhi, India. Today there are 44 members, which includes eight government departments, 32 engineering research units, 30 national apex bodies and 30 state apex bodies.
