List of police firearms in Malaysia

Last updated

Within the Royal Malaysia Police, officers and personnel are routinely armed. Special police officers are usually trained to a higher standard than regular personnel, because they are likely to be the officers required to enter besieged premises. The vast majority of firearms used by the Royal Malaysia Police are semi-automatic and fully automatic.

Following an Inspector-General of Police Firm Order D222, firearms use was deemed as needed. For example, using firearms to dismiss an illegal assembly or riot as shown in the Public Security manual. Use of firearms may be needed to repel an attack on top police station or police observation posts. Also, firearms could be used when an officer and/or members may be killed or hurt or weapons seized/station or property captured or destroyed. Additionally, prisoner escape could warrant such use. Police officers can use the firearm during roadblock duty or Narcotics Department operations, Criminal Investigation Department, Traffic Police and all branches that are carrying out duties where policeman life or public property is in jeopardy.

Weapons

Firearms in service vary between police forces in Malaysia, due to individual Constables and Police Authorities dictating the number of firearms officers and police firearms available to each force. Despite being armed, police constables still carry the standard issue T-batons, pepper spray and Hiatts Speedcuffs as well as the Walther P99 standard-issue sidearm. In some circumstances, special firearms can be authorised for use in police special operations and counter-terrorism unit. [1]

Security police Law enforcement agencies responsible for protecting specific properties

Security police usually describes a law enforcement agency which focuses primarily on providing security and law enforcement services to particular areas or specific properties. They may be employed by governmental, public, or private institutions. Security police are generally considered distinct from security guards as security police personnel typically hold some level of law enforcement authority. The exact powers held by security police vary widely between jurisdictions. Examples of these types of agencies include the United States' DoD Police and FBI Police, the Indian Central Industrial Security Force, and the British Civil Nuclear Constabulary.

Special police usually describes a police force or unit within a such an agency whose duties and responsibilities are significantly different from other forces in the same country or from other personnel within the same agency, although there is no consistent international definition. Generally, special police personnel hold some level of police powers; sometimes they hold the same powers and authority of other law enforcement officers within their jurisdiction, but at a minimum they will typically possess detainment and arrest authority. 'Special police' is also occasionally used when referring to an 'elite' law enforcement agency or unit, such as special weapons and tactics (SWAT) units or other similar paramilitary forces who have some level of police power. 'Special police' may also be used to describe individuals who are granted police powers incidental to their primary duties, such as welfare fraud investigators, certain security guards, child welfare investigators, and agricultural inspectors. Special police personnel may be armed or unarmed.

Authorised firearms officer British police officer armed with a firearm

An authorised firearms officer (AFO) is a British police officer who is authorised and trained to carry and use firearms. The designation is significant because most police officers in the United Kingdom do not routinely carry firearms. The only forces where officers are routinely armed are the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Ministry of Defence Police, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, Belfast Harbour Police and the Belfast International Airport Constabulary.

A firearms unit is an armed unit within each territorial police force in the United Kingdom. For the most part, the police forces of the United Kingdom are unarmed; however, all have firearms units to provide the police force with the capability to deal with armed criminals. A police officer cannot apply to join the firearms unit without first finishing their two-year probationary period, with a further two years in a core policing role for some forces. Firearms unit is the most common name outside of the capital, while that of London's Metropolitan Police Service is called the Specialist Firearms Command, Trojan, or SCO19. Within the media, it is sometimes compared to the SWAT units of the United States.

Police uniforms and equipment in the United Kingdom vary enormously per force or service, and different uniforms and equipment is used for different situations. Both what is worn and what is carried have varied considerably from the inception of the earliest recognisable mainstream police services in the early 19th century. As various laws in the mid-19th century standardised policing in the United Kingdom, so too were uniforms and equipment. From a variety of home grown uniforms, bicycles, swords and pistols the British police force evolved in look and equipment through the long coats and top hat, to the recognisable modern uniform of a white shirt, black tie, reflective jackets, body armour, and the battenburg-marked vehicles, to the present-day Airwave Solutions radios, electric vehicles and tasers.
