List of primary state highways serving Virginia state institutions

In the US state of Virginia, some state highways have been specifically designated to serve state parks and state institutions. State Route 217 and the range of numbers from State Route 302 to State Route 399 are currently used (non-exclusively) for this purpose. State Route 302 is the designation for the roads on the Grounds of the University of Virginia in Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville that are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation, including Copeley Road and Massie Road. State Route 305 is the designation for George Collins Parkway, the access road from SR 211 to the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park in Shenandoah County. The road was first designated in 1968, and the number was in use by 1971. [4] [6] [7]

State Route 308, Three Creeks Road, appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of part of SR 32 in Southampton County. In 1949 the part from SR 612 to SR 40 was made a secondary road, leaving behind the part of SR 308 from US 58 to just north of the Southampton Correctional Center, at a junction with SR 612 and SR 735. State Route 310 was the designation for the access road to the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in the City of Staunton. The road was first designated in June 1932, and was decommissioned before SR 310 was reassigned to the James River Correctional Center in 1990. [4] [10]

State Route 313 is the designation for the access road from US 522 to the Beaumont Learning Center in Powhatan County. This designation also covers some (but not all) roads within the facility. It is unknown when the road was first designated, although the July 1932 CTB meeting minutes specifically mention this road. [4] [5]

State Route 314 is the designation for the roads on the grounds of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Montgomery County that are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The roads may have been added to the state highway system in 1932, and the number was in use by 1939. [4] [5]

State Route 317 was the designation for the access road into the Blue Ridge Sanatorium in the City of Charlottesville. It connected the sanatorium with SR 20. It was first commissioned in July 1932, and was decommissioned in April 2002. [4] [5]

State Route 318 is the designation for the access road to the Virginia State Capitol from Ninth Street in the City of Richmond. Because of the nature of the building it accesses, one needed to have a proper pass to drive on this road until December 2019, when the designation was slightly extended to cover four nearby publicly-accessible roads. It is unknown when this road was first commissioned, but it may have been as early as 1941. [4]

State Route 334 is the designation for roads on the grounds of the Central Virginia Training Center in Amherst County that are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This institution is on the site of the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded (see also Carrie Buck) near Lynchburg. The roads were added to the state highway system in 1932, and the number was in use by 1938. [5] [13] The Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded (now one of five sites of the Central Virginia Training Center) will close by 2020, and VA 334 will be cancelled. [23] [24]

State Route 335 is the designation for the entrance into the Eastern Shore Experimental Station, formerly known as the Virginia Tech Experimental Station, Painter, Virginia in Accomack County, that is maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The road forms a loop off of SR 614. It was added to the state highway system in 1959. [13] [25]

State Route 353 is the designation for roads in the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center campus grounds in Richmond. [32] Though it has formerly included other roads, it is now only Duval Street Connection between 8th Street and the Main Hospital on 13th Street. [33] Although located entirely within the city and connecting city-maintained streets, Route 353 is maintained by the state, and, despite its short length, a single reassurance shield can be found westbound just after entering the route from 13th Street. SR 353 was first added to the state highway system in 1942, when 0.015 miles (0.024 km) from the end of East Clay Street south to the central power plant were taken over by the state. [34] The current SR 353 was built in the 1950s as part of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike project, and the original roadway was removed from the system in 1973. [28] [35] [36]

The Virginia segment is signed such that US 52 north corresponds to the general westward direction of the highway, and vice versa.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 69</span>

State Route 69 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Lead Mine Road, the state highway runs 3.59 miles (5.78 km) from SR 636 in Austinville east to U.S. Route 52 in Poplar Camp. SR 69 is the last remnant of a much longer route. At its peak from 1940 to 1945, this route ran from State Route 91 at Lodi east via St. Clair Bottom, Sugar Grove, Cedar Springs, Speedwell, Porters Crossroads, and Austinville to today's SR 69. However, it was never fully continuous; portions from Sugar Grove to Cedar Springs and west of Porters Crossroads to east of Austinville were secondary routes. The full length of this route as it existed and was planned is now part of SR 762, part of SR 660, all of SR 650, part of SR 16, all of SR 614, part of SR 749, part of US 21, part of SR 690, a small piece of SR 642, part of SR 619, part of SR 636, and SR 69.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 99</span> Highway in Virginia, United States

State Route 99 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 5.20 miles (8.37 km) from the north town limit of Pulaski east to SR F-047 just east of Interstate 81 (I-81) and SR 100 at McAdam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 13</span>

State Route 13 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Old Buckingham Road, the state highway runs 24.08 miles (38.75 km) from U.S. Route 60 and SR 45 in Cumberland east to US 60 in Plain View. SR 13 parallels US 60 to the south through eastern Cumberland County and western Powhatan County and passes through the latter county's seat of Powhatan. The state highway is the only state-numbered highway in Virginia that shares a number with a U.S. Highway but does not form a state-numbered extension of that U.S. Highway. SR 13's number comes from being a segment of the original cross-state SR 13 in 1918; that highway included portions of modern US 60. In 1933, US 60 was shifted to its present corridor between Buena Vista and Richmond, replacing SR 13. Two years later, SR 13 was assigned to Old Buckingham Road when US 60 was moved to its present alignment from Cumberland to east of Powhatan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 53</span> State highway in Virginia

State Route 53 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Thomas Jefferson Parkway, the state highway runs 18.32 miles (29.48 km) from SR 20 near Charlottesville east to U.S. Route 15 in Palmyra. SR 53 connects the county seats of Albemarle and Fluvanna counties. The state highway also provides access to the community of Lake Monticello and Monticello, the estate of Thomas Jefferson. The route of SR 53 became a state highway in 1930; the highway receives its present designation in 1947.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 170</span>

State Route 170 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Little Creek Road, the state highway runs 2.65 miles (4.26 km) from SR 165 east to U.S. Route 60 within the independent city of Norfolk. SR 170 is the eastern part of the connection between Naval Station Norfolk and Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 144</span>

State Route 144 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs 13.97 miles (22.48 km) from SR 36 at Fort Lee north to SR 145 at Centralia. SR 144's east–west segment is the main highway between Colonial Heights and both Fort Lee and Hopewell. The state highway's north–south section connects U.S. Route 1 and US 301 in Colonial Heights with SR 10 in Chester. A section of it was first added to the state highway system in 1930, and it gained its current routing and designation by 1987.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 175</span> Highway in Virginia, United States

State Route 175 (SR 175) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Chincoteague Road, the state highway runs 10.49 miles (16.88 km) from U.S. Route 13 (US 13) at Nash Corner east to Main Street in Chincoteague. SR 175 passes through the northeastern corner of Accomack County, providing the primary access to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility and both Chincoteague Island and the Virginia portion of Assateague Island. The route travels between the mainland and Chincoteague Island along the John B. Whealton Memorial Causeway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 234</span>

Virginia State Route 234 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. It runs from U.S. Route 1 near Dumfries via Independent Hill as Dumfries Road, bypasses Manassas as Prince William Parkway, and has a brief concurrency with Interstate 66 for 2.27 miles (3.65 km) between exits 44 and 47 before continuing northwest via Catharpin to U.S. Route 15 near Woolsey as Sudley Road.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virginia State Route 271</span>

State Route 271 is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Pouncey Tract Road, the state highway runs 7.34 miles (11.81 km) from U.S. Route 250 in Short Pump north to SR 620 and SR 622 in Rockville. A small section of it was first added to the state highway system during 1930, and it gained its current routing and designation by 1940.

Parham Road is a circumferential highway in Henrico County in the U.S. state of Virginia. The highway runs 12.08 miles (19.44 km) from Virginia State Route 150 near Tuckahoe east to U.S. Route 301 and SR 2 in Chamberlayne. Parham Road serves the northwestern suburbs of Richmond, including Tuckahoe, Laurel, and Chamberlayne. The four-lane divided highway intersects all of the major highways that extend northwest and north from the city, including Interstate 64 (I-64) and I-95. Parham Road is county maintained except for the portion that is State Route 73, a connector between US 1 and I-95. The Parham Road name was applied to a small portion of the current route by the early 20th century. SR 73 was constructed in the early 1960s. Most of Parham Road from SR 6 to US 1 was constructed as a new four-lane divided highway by Henrico County in the late 1960s; the existing sections were upgraded at the same time. The highway was extended east to its present terminus in the late 1970s. Parham Road was completed south to its present western terminus in 1990 concurrent with the extension of SR 150 across the James River from the Southside of Richmond to Henrico County.
