The Maldives National Men's Cricket Team represents the country of Maldives in international cricket. Although they did not become an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) until 2001, [5] they have taken part in the ACC Trophy on every occasion since its inception in 1996. They have never progressed beyond the first round of the tournament. They became an associate member in 2017. [1]

With the separation of the ACC Trophy into Elite and Challenge divisions, following their performance at the 2006 ACC Trophy, the Maldives competed in the Challenge divisions in both 2009 (when they came 3rd) and in the 2010 competition. The 2010 competition marked their first victory in an international tournament, defeating Saudi Arabia by 1 wicket in the final of the competition. [6]

As of February 2024, Pasindu Liyanaarachichi is the National Men's Coach. Azyan Farhath is the National Men's Captain.

As of September 2024, Pasindu Liyanaarachichi has left his role as the National Men's Coach. Leaving the team in state of disarray.

History

2018-Present

In April 2018, the ICC decided to grant full Twenty20 International (T20I) status to all its members. Therefore, all Twenty20 matches played between the Maldives and other ICC members after 1 January 2019 have the full T20I status. [7]

Maldives made its Twenty20 International debut on 20 January 2019, losing to Kuwait by eight wickets in the 2019 ACC Western Region T20 at Al Emarat Cricket Stadium, Muscat, Oman. [8]

Oman Cricket Academy Ground, also known as the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium, is a cricket ground in Al Amarat, south of Muscat, Oman. The ground is owned by the Oman Cricket Board. In January 2021, the International Cricket Council (ICC) gave accreditation for the Ministry Turf 1 at the stadium to host Test cricket.

The 2019 ACC Western Region T20 was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament held in Oman from 20 to 24 January 2019. The five participating teams were Bahrain, Kuwait, Maldives, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The matches were all played at the Al Amerat Cricket Stadium in Muscat. All participating nations made their T20I debuts during the tournament, following the decision of the ICC to grant full Twenty20 International status to all its members from 1 January 2019. Saudi Arabia defeated Qatar – who had been unbeaten in the round-robin stage – in the final by 7 wickets. Qatar's Tamoor Sajjad was named the player of the tournament.

Meet Bhavsar is a cricketer who plays for the Kuwait national cricket team. He was born and raised in Kuwait to Indian parents.
