As of the census [3] of 2000, there were 1,400 people, 529 households, and 369 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,645.7 inhabitants per square mile (635.4/km2). There were 616 housing units at an average density of 724.1 per square mile (279.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 82.71% White, 8.79% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 6.57% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.93% of the population.
There were 529 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
