Parti Marhaen Malaysia (PMM) was a former left-wing party formed by Ahmad Boestamam. [1]

History

The party were formed by Ahmad Boestamam on 20 July 1968, 8 hours before he left Malaysia for London to pursue legal studies for two and a half years. [2]

They were formed due to disputes between Ahmad Boestamam, the first president of Partai Rakyat, and his successor, Kassim Ahmad, regarding the Marhaenism ideology that was left by the party leadership. [3] [4] [5]

They were led by the triumvirate of Ishak Surin, Shariff Babol (former founder of Partai Rakyat) and Sheikh Hassan Jaafar.

The party merged with Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia (PEKEMAS) on 19 July 1974. [6] [7]

Aftermath

The party tried to reinvigorate the Socialist Front coalition before the 1974 elections, but failed. [8] [9] [10]

The Malayan Peoples' Socialist Front or better known as Socialist Front (SF) was a left-wing coalition of Malaysian socialist parties. It is noted as the longest-standing opposition coalition in Malaysian general election history. The coalition was formed by Partai Rakyat (PRM) and Parti Buruh Malaya (PBM) on Hari Merdeka. In 1964, National Convention Party (NCP) joined the coalition. PR left the coalition in 1965 and NCP soon become inactive. PBM, the only remaining party in SF, abandoned it on 10 January 1966 and reverted to its own banner. It took 21 years before another opposition coalition formed in Malaysia: Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah (APU) and Gagasan Rakyat (GR) in 1990.

The 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis is an ongoing political crisis in Malaysia. It has been caused by Members of Parliament (MPs) changing party support, leading to the loss of parliamentary majority, the collapse of two successive coalition governments and resignation of two Prime Ministers in less than 18 months. In February 2020, developments commonly nicknamed the Sheraton Move saw the ousting of the elected Pakatan Harapan government and the resignation of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, after 22 months in power. They were replaced with the Perikatan Nasional government under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. Political instability continued after this change throughout 2020 and into 2021, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This culminated in the resignation of Muhyiddin and his cabinet in August 2021 after 17 months in power. Ismail Sabri Yaakob was appointed Prime Minister a few days later.

Perikatan Nasional Political coalition in Malaysia

The National Alliance is a political coalition composed of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), Homeland Solidarity Party, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and later Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (GERAKAN). This coalition was preceded by the Malaysian Party Alliance Association, also known as the Persatuan Perikatan Parti Malaysia (PPPM).

Dr Syed Husin Ali is a retired academic and politician who served as president of the left-wing Parti (Sosialis) Rakyat Malaysia. He is also a prominent political detainee, who was held for six years without trial under Malaysia's Internal Security Act, from 1974 to 1980. Following the merger of Parti Rakyat Malaysia with Parti Keadilan Nasional, he held the position of deputy president of the merged entity Parti Keadilan Rakyat from 2003 to 2010. He also served two terms in Malaysia's Senate from 2009 to 2015.
