Malaysian Social Justice Party or (Malay : Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia) (PEKEMAS) was a political party formed by Tan Chee Khoon and Syed Hussein Alatas in 1972. On 19 July 1974, Parti Marhaen Malaysia merged with the party. [2] The party was dissolved in 1982. [3]

History

The party were formed by Tan Chee Khoon, Syed Hussein Alatas and Veerappen Veerathan [4] [5] in 1972 after Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia co-founder Lim Chong Eu led Gerakan into the newly expanded Alliance (renamed as the Barisan Nasional or National Front). [6] Tan strongly opposed this move because he felt it endorsed the race-based parties in Barisan Nasional. PEKEMAS is noted as a non-communal party and were formed based on principles similar to Gerakan. [7] [8] [9] Them were joined by 2 others Gerakan MPs, V. David and Veerappen. [10] Despite this, Tan supported the controversial government-supported New Economic Policy, which expanded the privileges given to Bumiputra (Malays and other indigenous people) under Article 153 of the Constitution because he felt tougher affirmative action was required to address Malay poverty. [11] On 19 July 1974, Parti Marhaen Malaysia merged with the party.

In the 1974 general election, [12] [13] PEKEMAS suffered a terrible defeat, with Tan being the only successful candidate out of 36 candidates for Parliament. [14] [15] PEKEMAS' campaign against the government was predicated on denying them the requisite 2/3 majority for amending the Constitution, which Tan opposed. The Democratic Action Party and the Sarawak National Party became the largest opposition parties in Parliament, with nine seats each. This effectively hamstrung Tan's and PEKEMAS' agenda in Parliament. [16] Tan announced his retirement from politics in 1977, although he held his Parliament and Selangor State Assembly seats until their terms expired the next year. The party influence started to wear out in 1978 due to the defection of its chairman, Ahmad Boestamam to Parti Rakyat Malaysia [17] after 1978 general elections. [18] The party further shrank in 1979 due to most of PEKEMAS' supporters defecting to the DAP. [11] [19] [20] [21] It managed to field a candidate in the 1982 general elections before its dissolution. [22]

The Malaysian People's Movement Party is a liberal political party in Malaysia.Formed in 1968, Gerakan gained prominence in the 1969 general election when it defeated the ruling Alliance Party in Penang and won the majority of seats in Penang's state legislature. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Tan Chee Khoon</span> Malaysian politician (1919–1996)

Tan Chee Khoon was a major figure in Malaysian politics from 1959 to 1978, at one point being nicknamed "Mr. Opposition" for the outspoken views he presented in Parliament. He was the official Leader of the Opposition in Parliament from 1964 to 1969. Although he was originally a leader of the Labour Party of Malaya and the Socialist Front coalition which Labour had joined, Tan later co-founded Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), and also Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia (Pekemas) after he became disillusioned with Gerakan.

Syed Hussein Alatas bin Syed Ali Alatas was a Malaysian academic, sociologist, politician, and founder of social science organisations. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya in the 1980s and formed the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan). Syed Hussein wrote several books on corruption, multi-racialism, imperialism, and intellectual captivity as part of the colonial, and postcolonial, project, the most famous being The Myth of the Lazy Native.

Tan Sri Dato' Sri Lee Kim Sai was a Malaysian politician. In the 1980s and 1990s, he served as Labour Minister (1985–1989), Housing and Local Government Minister (1989–1990) and Health Minister (1990–1995); and was deputy president of Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) (1986–1996), a major component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.

Ahmad Boestamam, or Abdullah Thani bin Raja Kechil, was a Malaysian freedom fighter, politician and was the founding president of Parti Rakyat Malaysia and Parti Marhaen Malaysia. Abdullah was an editor and reporter for several newspapers which compelled him with the Ahmad pen-name honouring Indian freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose.

Lim Si Pin is a Malaysian politician. He ever served as the head of the youth wing of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan), a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition; from 2008 to 2011.

Chor Chee Heung is a Malaysian politician and was the Member of Parliament of Malaysia for the Alor Setar constituency in Kedah, Malaysia from 21 October 1990 to 5 May 2013. Tan Kee Kwong is a Malaysian politician of Chinese origin. He served as a Member of Parliament for Wangsa Maju representing People's Justice Party (PKR) of Pakatan Harapan coalition between 2013 and 2018. Previously, he was the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) Member of Parliament for Segambut for three terms from 1995 to 2008 and was the deputy minister of Land and Cooperative Development from 1999 to 2004 in the Barisan Nasional (BN) federal government. He later joined PKR in 2008 and currently sat on the party disciplinary board.

Veerappen Veerathan is a Malaysian lawyer and politician. He is well known for founding the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) together with Dr. Lim Chong Eu, Dr. Tan Chee Khoon and Dr. Syed Hussein Alatas. In 1972, he left Gerakan and founded the new party Parti Keadilan Masyarakat Malaysia (PEKEMAS).

Chang Lih Kang is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in the Unity Government administration under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim since December 2022 and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Malim since May 2018. He served as Member of the Perak State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Teja from March 2008 to May 2018. Dato' Sri Ikmal Hisham bin Abdul Aziz is a Malaysian politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanah Merah since May 2013. He served as the Deputy Minister of Defence for the second term in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Minister Hishammuddin Hussein from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and the first term in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Minister Ismail Sabri from March 2020 to the collapse of the PN administration in August 2021. Teng Chang Khim is a Malaysian politician and lawyer who served as Senior Member of the Selangor State Executive Council (EXCO) in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) state administrations under Menteris Besar Khalid Ibrahim, Azmin Ali and Amirudin Shari from May 2013 to August 2023 as well as Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Bandar Baru Klang from May 2018 to August 2023, for Sungai Pinang from March 2004 to May 2018, for Bandar Klang from November 1999 to March 2004 and for Bukit Gasing from April 1995 to November 1999. Datuk Yusof bin Yacob is a Malaysian politician who has served as Chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Berhad since January 2023 and the Member of Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Sindumin since May 2018. He served as State Minister of Education and Innovation of Sabah in the Heritage Party (WARISAN) state administration under former Chief Minister Shafie Apdal from May 2018 to the collapse of the WARISAN administration in September 2020, Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat from May 2004 to December 2007 and Member of Parliament (MP) for Sipitang from April 1995 to March 2008. He is a member of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (GAGASAN), a component party of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition. He was a member of the WARISAN, before leaving the party on 8 October 2021 to become an independent in support of the ruling GRS coalition. He was also member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) which he left in 2018. On 22 May 2022, he confirmed that he had applied to rejoin and was pending return to BN and UMNO after leaving them four years ago. However, his application was not accepted before he withdrew the application and joined GAGASAN instead on 21 January 2023.
