Quanguo Waiyu Shuiping Kaoshi ("National Foreign Language Proficiency Test," WSK) is a series of foreign language tests administered in Mainland China for educators who did not major in foreign languages. [1] The National Education Examinations Authority (NEEA) of China developed these tests. Performance on the WSK determines whether one is permitted to take training,studies, [2] or additional studies within one's major in institutions outside of China. [1]
Some universities make successful completion of the WSK as a requirement for promotion in one's academic title. [1]
The Public English Test System (PETS) is the test for the English language,available in five levels:PETS-1 through PETS-5. [3] The other versions are TNF for the French language,NTD for the German language,NNS (日本語能力試験Nihongo Nōryoku Shiken;日语水平考试;RìyǔShuǐpíng Kǎoshì [4] ) for the Japanese language,and ТПРЯ (Russian :Тестпопроверкеуровнявладениярусскимязыком "Russian Language Proficiency Test";俄语水平考试;ÉyǔShuǐpíng Kǎoshì [5] ) for the Russian language. The College English Test,better known as CET,is a national English as a foreign language test in the People's Republic of China. The Constitution of the People's Republic of China calls on the government to promote Putonghua as the common tongue of the nation,but this policy has caused conflict to a certain extent with plans to preserve local varieties of Chinese. Education and media programming in varieties of Chinese other than Mandarin have been discouraged by the governments of the People's Republic of China,Singapore,and Taiwan. Teaching the varieties of Chinese to non-native speakers is discouraged by the laws of the People's Republic of China in favor of Putonghua. The Guangdong National Language Regulations are a set of laws enacted by the Guangdong provincial government in the People's Republic of China in 2012 to promote the use of Standard Mandarin Chinese in broadcast and print media at the expense of the local standard Cantonese and other related dialects. It has also been labelled a "pro-Mandarin,anti-Yue" legislation.
