Sree Narayana College, Kollam (popularly known as SN College, Kollam), named after the social reformer Narayana Guru, is a centre of higher education in Kerala, India offering up to post graduate and research courses to more than 4,000 students.

General information

The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala. Currently, the college offers 17 undergraduate and 13 postgraduate courses with eight Departments as approved research centers. [1]

Other facilities and amenities available on the campus include a Study Centre of the University of Kerala that caters to the teachers, students, and research scholars of Kollam, a University Career Guidance and Information Center, a Study Center of the Indira Gandhi National Open University offering distance education courses, units of National Service Scheme and NCC, and a Computer Center.[ citation needed ] The college has a staff strength of more than 270 out of which 190 are members of the teaching faculty.[ citation needed ]

History

The college formally started functioning on 16 June 1948 with 505 students at the Pre-University level. [2]

Education in Kerala

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala is underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. Sree Narayana Trust

Sree Narayana Trust, also known as the SN Trust, is an Indian educational organisation. The headquarters of Sree Narayana Trust is in Kollam city. It is named after Sree Narayana Guru and was formed by a former Chief Minister of Kerala, R. Sankar, in 1952 to manage the Sree Narayana College, Kollam. Later, educational institutions were started in other parts of Kerala.

Sree Narayana College for Women is a postgraduate college affiliated with the University of Kerala. The college is named after social reformer, philosopher and saint Sree Narayana Guru. Sree Narayanaguru Open University

Sreenarayanaguru Open University is an UGC approved open university in Kerala established by the Kerala Government. It is the fourteenth State University in Kerala and the fifteenth open university in India. The University consisting of Regional Centres and Study Centres have its territorial limits across the whole state of Kerala. With the establishment of the University, it became the only university in Kerala to offer distance education courses and all the distance education courses then being offered by the four universities in Kerala, namely, Kerala University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Calicut University and Kannur University came under the administrative control and purview of the new University. The University has been named after the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru and has its headquarters at Kureepuzha in Kollam city.
