Ayathil is a neighbourhood in Vadakkevila zone of Kollam city, Kerala, India. [1] [2] It is the 36th ward in Kollam Municipal Corporation. [3] It is one of the cashew processing hubs in Kollam city. Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation Limited has a factory there. [4] Kollam Bypass passes through Ayathil.

Importance

Ayathil is a healthcare hub of Kollam city. Ayathil junction connects National Highway 66 with Kollam-Kulathupuzha road and Ayathil-Pallimukku road. There are four multi-speciality hospitals situated in Ayathil-Mevaram stretch of National Highway 66 in Kollam city. [5] [6] [7] [8] Sree Narayana Institute of Technology a college in Kollam city that runs Master of Computer Applications courses. [9] Younus College of Engineering & Technology is another professional college situated close to Ayathil. [10]

Ayathil is one of the major power suppliers of Kollam city. LDF ruled Kerala Government have upgraded 66kV Electrical substation in Ayathil to 110kV for boosting the power supply in Kollam. [11] [12] Now it is one among the 116 Electrical substations in Kerala with 110kV power. [13] The Government of Kerala has laid the foundation stone for Rs.30 crore Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) project to supply power to Kollam city. Kollam is the fourth city in Kerala (after Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode) to receive a Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) project for uninterrupted power supply in the city. Underground cables from Kavanad and Ayathil substations feed the Kollam GIS. [14]

Kollam, also known by its former name Quilon, is an ancient seaport and city on the Malabar Coast of India bordering the Laccadive Sea, which is a part of the Arabian Sea. Kollam Bypass is a part of NH 66 that bypasses CBD of Kollam city in Kerala, India. The busy 13.141 km long bypass starts at Mevaram in the south to Kavanad in the north, via Ayathil, Kallumthazham, Kadavoor and Kureepuzha in Kollam city. It is a joint venture between the central and state government. It was inaugurated on 15 January 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Asramam Link Road is an important four-lane city road in Kollam in the Indian state of Kerala. This road was formerly known as Airport Road or Aerodrome Road as it was the connection road to Kollam Airport, the one and only airport in the entire Kerala coast then. The road starts from Kappalandimukku near Polayathode in the east and currently ends at KSRTC, but is ultimately planned to extend to Thoppilkadavu in the west of the city. A.D.Cotton or Parvathi Mills Limited is a textile manufacturing company owned by the National Textile Corporation (NTC) in Kollam city, India. The company was founded in 1884 by British citizen A.D. Cotton and was the lifeline of Kollam before independence. This mill was taken for rent for running by a Tamil enterpriser after Independence as the land was owned by the Kerala State Textile Corporation at that time. It was later was handed over to the NTC. The company has 120 employees, six of which are NTC staffers and 17 are casual workers. The plant has been shut down since 2008 pending modernisation. However, there is demand to build a bird sanctuary connected to backwaters.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Islands of Kollam</span>

City of Kollam or Quilon is known as Prince of Arabian Sea, situated on the banks of Arabian Sea and Ashtamudi Lake. A major portion of Kollam Municipal Corporation area is occupied by Ashtamudi Lake. It is the most visited backwater and lake of Kerala, with a unique wetland ecosystem, a palm-shaped large water body, next only to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. Ashtamudi means 'eight coned'(Ashta = 'eight'; mudi = 'coned') in the local language of Malayalam. This name is indicative of the lake's topography: a lake with multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. This lake is extremely famous for House Boat and Backwater Resorts.
