Kollam MEMU Shed is an ISO certified motive power depot facility for maintaining MEMU rakes, situated in the city of Kollam in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the four MEMU rake maintenance sheds serving the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. [1] Kollam MEMU Shed is functioning as the control and coordination center of MEMU trains running through Kerala state. [2]

MEMU sheds in Kollam and Palakkad were proposed in 2008's Indian Railway Budget. The first announced MEMU shed for Kerala was in Kollam, but the inauguration of this shed was delayed for more than two years due to clearance issues and negligence of Indian Railways. [3] Palakkad MEMU shed inaugurated on 1 January 2011. [4] The Kollam MEMU shed was formally commissioned on 1 December 2013, five years after its completion. [5] In the second half of 2019, the Southern Railway started replacing the traditional rakes with High-speed, three-phase MEMU trains running on Kollam routes. [6] As the first step, a three-phase MEMU train with 8 coaches started service on Kollam Junction-Ernakulam Junction-Kollam Junction route from September 2, 2019. [7]

The MEMU Carshed in Kollam currently conducts periodic overhauling activities for two different types of rakes manufactured by ICF, Chennai:

Presently, 9 pairs of MEMU services are operated from/to Kollam Junction. The maintenance works of those rakes are regularly being done in Kollam MEMU shed.

The 16525 /16526 Island Express is an Indian Railways train running between Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Bangalore City railway station, Bangalore and Kanyakumari railway station, Kanyakumari. Train no. 16526 runs from Bengaluru to Kanyakumari, and Train No. 16525 runs in the reverse direction. The train runs daily through the state of Kerala and covers the 944 km journey in about 19 hours 15 minutes.

The 12617 / 12618 Mangala Lakshadweep Superfast Express is a Superfast train in India that runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin in Delhi and Ernakulam Junction in Kochi, Kerala via the Konkan Railway route. It is operated by Southern Railway with 12617 / 12618 train numbers. In 1973, the earlier version of this train was the first direct train to Kerala and Coastal Karnataka from the national capital. In its renewed form as Mangala Lakshadweep Express, it became the 1st daily train connecting North,Central Kerala and New Delhi after Kerala Express (1977). It is also regarded as the 1st daily direct access train to the national capital for the Malabar districts, Coastal Karnataka districts and Lakshadweep.It is the only train which connects Nashik,Manmad to Kerala apart from Coimbatore Jabalpur Express.

The Palaruvi Express is a daily Intercity express train which runs between Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu and Palakkad Junction in Kerala via Tirunelveli Junction, Tenkasi Junction, Punalur, Kollam Junction, and Kottayam. The 20631/20632 Mangaluru Central - Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express is India's 33rd Vande Bharat Express train, connecting South Karnataka's coastal city Mangaluru (Mangalore) with Kerala's south and state capital Thiruvananthapuram. It is the second Vande Bharat Express in Kerala as well as India's first saffron coloured semi-high speed train. The first Vande Bharat train in Kerala started its service between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram via Kottayam route in April 2023. With increase in patronage, there has been a strong demand by the passengers to have a second Vande Bharat between Mangalore and Thiruvananthapuram so as to increase the frequency of this route per day to three trains.
