Palakkad railway division is one of the six administrative divisions of the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways, headquartered at Palakkad in Kerala. It is the smallest railway division in Southern Railway. It was formed by dissolving the Podanur division. Managing 588 route kilometers of track in the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Mahé, it is one of the oldest railway divisions in India. The major stations under this railway division are Palakkad Junction, Shoranur Junction, Tirur, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur, Kasaragod, Mangalore Central, Mangalore Junction and Pollachi Junction. It is the only division in India with no terminal facilities in its headquarters. The terminal facility of Palakkad division is situated in Shoranur Junction & Mangalore Central of Karnataka state. It is the only division headquarters in India with no originating train to its state capital. In India, Palakkad division has the fewest pitlines.

Transport in Coimbatore

Coimbatore has a well-developed transport infrastructure. The city and its suburbs is traversed using its road networks. Coimbatore is well connected by Road, Rail and Air with most cities and towns in India except through waterways. Jolarpettai–Shoranur line

The Jolarpettai–Shoranur line connects Jolarpettai, on the Chennai Central–Bangalore City line in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and Shoranur in Kerala. Incoming from Chennai/ Tirupati side via Arakkonam and Katpadi at Jolarpettai, there are several branch lines: Jolarpettai–Bangarapet–Bangalore, Salem–Omalur–Mettur Dam/Dharmapuri–Hosur–Yeshvantapur, Salem–Namakkal–Karur, Salem–Virudhachalam–Villupuram, Erode–Karur, Irugur/Podanur–Coimbatore–Mettupalayam and Palakkad–Dindigul. From Shoranur, the railway lines further branches out towards Kozhikode, Nilambur and Thrissur sides in Kerala. This network links the railway network in Kerala to the networks in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and subsequently other states.

The circular railway line will help run through Coimbatore Junction, Podanur, Vellalore, Irugur, Singanallur, Peelamedu and Coimbatore North. This will certainly help decongest the city roads. A senior official with the Salem division says, "if the revival of an old line can bring about so many benefits, it can be considered".
