Mysore State Railway (MSR) was a railway company which was operated by the government of the Kingdom of Mysore. [1] After India's constitution into a republic, MSR became part of Southern Railways of the government of India on 14 April 1951.
In 1879, the Madras Railway Company constructed a railway line from Royapuram in Madras presidency to Bangalore city. At that time, Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar X established a separate railway organisation to carryout extension lines from Bangalore to Mysore. [2] This establishment came to be known as Mysore State Railway.
The Mysore-Nanjangud track stretching for 25.51km was opened for traffic in 1891. The 60.74km Birur-Shimoga line was opened for traffic in 1899. Another important line was Yeshvantpur to Hindupur which was opened for traffic in 1892-93. In 1911-12, the Government of Mysore decided the formation of the State Railway Construction Department and it was put under the control of Sir E.A.S. Bell, the chief engineer. The Shimoga-Talaguppa section was laid in 1930. In 1951, it merged with Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway to form the Southern Railway.
Mysore State Railway started laying the Shivamogga–Talaguppa 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) line in the year 1930 to provide access to Jog Falls. [3] [4] Another purpose was to transport wooden logs from the forests of the Malnad region to make wooden sleepers and also to be used as a fuel in the furnaces of the Mysore Iron Works at Bhadravathi. [5] In 1938, Sir Mirza Ismail took the maiden journey on this line to visit Sagara city. [6] The final section of the line from Sagara to Talaguppa was inaugurated on 9 November 1940. [7]
Some of the prominent people who have used this line to visit Jog Falls include Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Morarji Desai. [3] Socialist leader, Ram Manohar Lohia travelled in a train on this line to participate in the Kagodu Satyagraha but was arrested at Sagara station. [3]
In 1990s, the train on the Shivamogga-Talaguppa line was replaced by a railcar. [5] The railcar could accommodate 52 passengers and took 3:45 hours to cover the distance of 82km, a journey which took considerably lesser time to cover by road. It was one of the few trains with conductors on board and tickets could be bought on the train itself, whereas the normal practice followed in Indian Railways, was that passengers should buy tickets before boarding a train. [8] Once the railcar reached Talaguppa, the rail car had to be reversed using a turntable, so that it could start its return journey. [9]
In 1936, the company owned 39 locomotives, 216 coaches and 754 goods wagons. [10]
It was labeled as a Class II railway according to Indian Railway Classification System of 1926. [11] [12] Later, it was classified as Class I. [13]

The Bangalore-Shimoga line was converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge starting from late 1990s to early 2000s. Finally, the Shimoga-Talaguppa line was converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge in 2007. [14]

Jog Falls is a waterfall on the Sharavati river located in Siddapura taluk, Uttara Kannada District and its view point is located in Sagara taluk, Shimoga district of Karnataka, India. It is the second highest plunge waterfall in India. It is a segmented waterfall which depends on rain and season to become a plunge waterfall. The falls are major attractions for tourists and is ranked 36th in the list of free-falling waterfalls, 490th in the world by list of waterfalls by total height, 128th in the list of single-drop waterfalls in the World by the waterfall database.
Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV (Kannada: ಶ್ರೀ ನಾಲ್ವಡಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರು; 4 June 1884 – 3 August 1940) was the twenty-fourth Maharaja of Mysore, reigning from 1902 until his death in 1940.
Honnemaradu is a tourist place situated on the back waters of River Sharavathi in India. Honnemardu derived its name from the Honne tree. However, the literal meaning of Honnemardu is Golden Lake. This is perhaps a reference to the fact that Honnemardu is located on the backwaters of the Sharavathi river.

Talaguppa is a village located in Sagara Taluk in Karnataka State, India. The National Highway No.206 passes through Talaguppa village. The village is 14.37 km from the taluk's center Sagara, 77.68 km from Shivamogga, and 373 km from Bengaluru. It is located at a distance of 14 km from Jog Falls, the highest waterfall in India and Talaguppa is the linking Railway terminus for Jog falls. Areca nut and paddy are the most grown crops.
Yeshwanthapura, also known as Yeshvantpur is a locality in the north western part of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located to the north of Malleshwara and west of Hebbala. Coimbatore Junction Railway Station (station code: CBE) is an NSG–2 category Indian railway station in Salem railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is a major railway station located in the city of Coimbatore in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the busiest railway stations in South India and serves as a gateway to the Nilgiri hills, a popular tourist destination. The station has six platforms and is the third highest revenue generating station in the zone after Chennai Central and Egmore and also generates about 45 percent of the revenue of the Salem railway division. Coimbatore Junction is an important junction connecting major cities such as Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. It also serves as a gateway to several popular tourist destinations such as Ooty and Kodaikanal. Although Coimbatore railway station has the suffix Junction in its name, it's not a true junction. No new line starts from or ends at Coimbatore. It's just a passing railway station lies between Podanur Junction and Coimbatore North Junction.
Harana Halli is a village in the southern state of Karnataka, India. It is located in the Shimoga taluk of Shimoga district in Karnataka. Harana Halli is about 21 km from Shimoga town. The trains operating from Birur to Sagara go via Harana Halli railway station. The famous Shimoga-Talaguppa railway (RailBus) route which provides access to Jog Falls goes via Harana Halli. The Rail bus service is now stopped.

The Mysore Commission, also known as commissioners' rule or simply the Commission Rule, was a period and form of government in the history of the Kingdom of Mysore and the neighbouring province of Coorg from 1831 to 1881 when British commissioners administered the kingdom due to the deposition of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and later due to minority of Yuvaraja Chamaraja Wadiyar X. A board of commissioners constituted the chief executive body and provincial head of the kingdom's government. The commission began with uninstallation of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as King in 1831 and ended with investing Chamaraja Wadiyar X as King in 1881.

The river Varada originates near Varada-moola. Sagara subdivision consists of Sagara, Soraba, Hosanagara and Shikaripur taluks.
Bengaluru East railway station, also known as Bangalore East railway station, is an old British-era railway station surrounded by Pottery Road, Kumaraswamy Naidu Road, Murgesha Mudaliar Road and Kenchappa Road. It is a small quaint station located in Fraser Town, Bangalore Cantonment. This station is very convenient for residents traveling towards or returning from Kolar Gold Fields or Madras. Express and Mail trains did not stop here until the 1920s. The station is now renovated with a larger platform. Adjacent to the railway station is the Bangalore East Football Grounds, which nowadays is more used for playing cricket. Well-known cartoonist Paul Fernandes remembers as a young boy befriending train drivers at this station and getting grease for his bicycle.

The Mysuru–Talaguppa Express is an Express train belonging to South Western Railway zone that runs between Mysore Junction and Talaguppa in India. It is currently being operated with 16227/16228 train numbers on a daily basis.
Anandapuram is a railway station on Birur–Talaguppa branch line of Bangalore–Arsikere–Hubli line. It is located in Shimoga district, Karnataka state, India. The station consists of two platforms, which are not well sheltered. It lacks many facilities including water and sanitation.
