Antyodaya Express are a series of trains operated by Indian Railways. The trains were initially proposed to be overnight unreserved trains in the 2016 Railway budget of India, but were later converted to include reserved coaches. Antyodaya refers to the uplifting of the weaker section of a society. The coaches are designed by Indian Railways with features such as bio-toilets and dedicated power sockets.

History

The first service was inaugurated on 27 February 2017, between Ernakulam Junction and Howrah. [1]

Facilities

The trains include dedicated charging ports, bio-toilets, vinyl sheets on the exteriors for aesthetics, safety measures such as smoke alarm and CCTV, water vending machines, coat hangers, and Braille indicators. [2] [3]

Shatabdi Express are a series of fast passenger trains operated by Indian Railways. Shatabdi Express are day trains and mostly return to their origin station the same day. The trains were first introduced in 1988 and were named 'Shatabdi', meaning 'century', to commemorate the birth centenary of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The trains run at a maximum permissible speed of 110–150 km/h (68–93 mph) with the Rani Kamalapati–New Delhi Shatabdi Express achieving the maximum permissible speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) between Tughlakabad and Agra Cantt.

Southern Railway is one of the eighteen zones of Indian Railways. It is headquartered at Chennai and operates across the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and the union territory of Puducherry. The origin of the Southern Railway can be traced back to the Madras Railway formed in 1845. Southern Railway was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. Indian Railways coaching stock consists of various travel class passenger coaches, freight wagons apart from specialized and dedicated coaching stock for other uses. As of 2022, it operates over 8000 trains daily with a inventory of 318,196 freight wagons and 84,863 passenger coaches. The rolling stock is manufactured by five units owned by Indian Railways, four public sector units and one private company.

The Jan Shatabdi Express is a more affordable and economical version of the Shatabdi Express. The word 'Jan' refers to common people. Being an economical version of the Shatabdi Express, it provides the passenger with Air Conditioned Chair Car, Second Class Seating and Unreserved classes. Though its priority is less than that of the trains like Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express and Duronto Express, it enjoys a greater priority than the Mail, Express and the Superfast Express trains of Indian Railways. Humsafar Express is a fully premium service with AC-3 Tier and Sleeper class accommodation having all the modern facilities designed and operated by Indian Railways. "Humsafar" is a Urdu word meaning "co-passenger" The first service was inaugurated on 16 December 2016 between Gorakhpur and Anand Vihar Terminal, New Delhi. The fares of Humsafar Express at the time of launch are around 15–20% higher compared to normal AC-3 tier and Sleeper class fares.

The Tejas Express is a semi-high speed fully air-conditioned train introduced by Indian Railways. It features modern onboard facilities with doors which are operated automatically. It is one of 3 semi-high speed trains running in India, the others being the Vande Bharat Express and the Gatimaan Express.

Howrah–Ernakulam Antyodaya Express is a superfast express train of the Indian Railways connecting Howrah Junction in Kolkata and Ernakulam Junction in Kochi. It is currently being operated with 22877/22878 train numbers on a weekly basis. It has been a lifeline for the migrant workers from Eastern India. Thousands of workers use this train to travel from West Bengal and Odisha to the industrial cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Lokmanya Tilak Terminus - Tatanagar Antyodaya Express was a superfast express train of the Indian Railways connecting Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Maharashtra and Tatanagar Junction in Jharkhand. It was operated with 22885/22886 train numbers on a weekly basis.

Tambaram - Sengottai Antyodaya Express is a superfast express train of the Indian Railways connecting Tambaram in Chengalpet district with Sengottai in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. It was planned to be operated daily with 16189/16190 train numbers, later decision was reverted.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM NORTH –Mangaluru Junction Antyodaya Express is an express train belonging to Thiruvananthapuram division, Southern Railway zone that runs between Kochuveli and Mangaluru Junction. It operates with 16355/16356 train numbers on bi-weekly basis. It is the first unpainted stainless steel train of India. This train answers the long standing demand of the people of North Kerala for a fourth train to the capital.

Vande Bharat Express is a medium-distance superfast express service operated by Indian Railways. It is a reserved, air-conditioned chair car service connecting cities that are less than 800 km (500 mi) apart or take less than ten hours to travel with existing services. The train entered commercial service on 15 February 2019.
