Umri Kalan is a town in the Moradabad district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in Northern India.
The name Umri Kalan is derived from the name of Caliph Umar. "Kalan" means big. Before 1757, when the British East India Company Rule was instituted, the official name was Umari Kalan Ganj Faridi.
In 1265, the Sufi saint Fariduddin Ganjshakar and his nephew Sabir Kaliyari stayed in Umri Kalan. They left two of their disciples there, working towards the Sufism mission.
The Gate of Umri Kalan was named Shaikh-ul-Hadees Syed Maulana Fakhr-ul-Hasan Gate, after Syed Maulana Fakhrul Hasan who was born in 1905 (A H 1323), at Umri Kalan.
The gate was built in 2006 by Syed Nasir Ali, a two-time winner of chairmanship of Umri Kalan district moradabad. He is recognised by shree Mayawati behen (former Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh) for his development in Umri Kalan in road structure and drainage.
In the late 1960s, he Syed Maulana Fakhrul Hasan held a high office[ vague ] at the Darul Uloom Deoband.

Two dominant Groups in Umri Kalan are Descendents of Hazrat Umar Farooq R.A., known as Shaikh Farooqi and other one are Descendents of Hazrat Abu Ayyub Ansari R.A from Tribe in Medina named Qabila Banu Najjar sub-clan of Qabila Banu Khajraj, Known as Shaikh Aal-e-Ansaar.
Late. Munshi Mohammad Hasan R.A, a popular Teacher in the Town wrote a Book (Naqsh -E- Ansaar).

Madrassa Shahi is an Islamic seminary in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1879 by the poor Muslims of Moradabad under the supervision of Islamic scholar, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, who also established the Darul Uloom Deoband. This started as Madrasatul Ghuraba, but gained recognition as Madrasa Shahi. Its first principal was Ahmad Hasan Amrohi.
Syed Mohammed Mukhtar Ashraf (Urdu: سید محمد مختاراشرف, Hindi: सैयद मोहम्मद मुख्तार अशरफ़) well known as Sarkar E Kalan or Makhdoon ul Mashaikh was an Indian Sufi saint, spiritual leader, Islamic Scholar of Ahle Sunnah of the Ashrafi sufi order from Ashrafpur Kichhauchha, Uttar Pradesh, India. He was the Sajjada nashin of Dargah Ashraf Jahangir Semnani, founder of the Ashrafi Sufi Order. Syed died on 21 November 1996 in Ashrafpur Kichhauchha and is buried near dargah of Ashraf Jahangir Semnani.
Hassan Raza Khan Barelvi popularly known as Hasan Barelvi was an Indian islamic scholar, sufi and poet and the younger brother of Imam Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, the main leader of the Ahle Sunnat movement. He was a disciple of Syed Shah Ale Rasool Marehrawi, a Sufi master from Marehra, Etah, Uttar Pradesh. He was a disciple of Dagh Dehlvi, a learned poet from Delhi. Hasrat Mohani praised Khan's poetry.
