History
The station took the air in 1949, licensed to Skyland Broadcasting Corp. It was sold in 1961 to Brush-Moore Newspapers, publisher of the Canton Repository. In 1965 the station was sold to Group One Broadcasting of Akron, owner of WAKR. During the mid-1960s WONE was known as "Channel 98," and it was one of Dayton's two popular Top 40 stations, the other being WING. The format changed to adult contemporary in 1968, when it was called "Charisma Radio" and "The Good Life in Dayton". Sometime thereafter, in early 1969 it switched to country music calling itself "One Country" or "Country-Wide W-1" to remain synonymous with its then-owner Group One.
Changes of ownership
On September 8, 1986, Group One was dissolved, and the station was sold to DKM Broadcasting. (One year beforehand, Group One obtained permission to place the WONE call sign on WAKR's FM sister station in Akron.) WONE's ownership passed to Stoner Broadcasting on December 9, 1992, to American Radio Systems on September 13, 1993, and to Jacor Communications on October 17, 1997.
During most of the station’s years of programming country music, WONE did well in the Dayton market ratings, usually scoring first or second place in ratings among adults 18–49 years of age. The weekday programming lineup for most of the country years started with David G. McFarland in the morning drive time period, followed by Jim Howell in late mornings, John Ross in early afternoons, and Terry Wood (program director) in afternoon drive. The evening show was hosted over the years by Dean Taylor, Ed Riley and Chuck Wheeler. After-midnight shifts and weekends were hosted by Lee Nolan, Jim Lyons and others.
Adult standards
After 25 years as a country music station, WONE changed from "98 Country" to adult standards, "Dayton's ONE for Original Hits", on November 29, 1994 and acquired Springfield-based former Top 40 giant WIZE (which at the time also aired adult standards) along the way. WIZE would simulcast virtually all of WONE's programming until April 22, 2011, when WIZE broke away to launch a country format aimed specifically at the Springfield region.
Switch to sports talk
WONE adopted its present sports talk format on December 8, 2003, (as "980 Sports ONE") again competing with WING, then adopted the "Homer" nickname and weekday programming associated with WSAI 1360 AM (now on WCKY 1530 AM) in 2005. This simulcast with WCKY would eventually be severed in 2007, when WONE would start to air local sports talk in the afternoon, as well as clearing Fox Sports Radio in the morning hours (which eventually led to a clearance of Dayton native Dan Patrick's late morning show.) They are now known as Fox Sports 980. The station airs the entire Fox Sports Radio lineup. The station is an affiliate for the Dan Patrick Show. WONE is streamed online via iHeartRadio.
WMNI is a commercial radio station licensed to Columbus, Ohio, known as "Fox Sports 920" with a sports format. Locally owned by North American Broadcasting Company, Inc., WMNI serves the Columbus metropolitan area. WMNI's studios are located in Marble Cliff, Ohio, using a Columbus address, while the transmitter resides in Grove City. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WMNI is available online.
WCVX is a radio station licensed to Florence, Kentucky in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. WCVX is owned by the Christian Broadcasting System and it carries a Christian radio format. Its studios and offices are on West Seventh Street in Cincinnati and its transmitter is off Fowler Creek Road in Florence. WCVX broadcasts with a directional antenna with 5,000 watts in the daytime but at night it reduces power to 990 watts to protect KSL in Salt Lake City, the Class A Clear-channel station on 1160 kHz. WYLL in Chicago, Illinois is the only other full-time 50,000-watt station on 1160 AM, although it is a Class B station.
KFBK is a commercial AM radio station in Sacramento, California. It is simulcast on KFBK-FM 93.1 MHz. KFBK-AM-FM air a news-talk radio format and are owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. The studios and offices are on River Park Drive in North Sacramento, near the Arden Fair Mall.
WULM "Radio Maria" 1600 AM is an American non-commercial AM radio station licensed in Springfield, Ohio serving the Springfield and Dayton area with Catholic inspirational programming. It operates at 1600 kHz with a power output of 1,000 watts daytime and with a reduced power of 34 watts nighttime. It is a repeater of KJMJ 580 kHz in Alexandria, Louisiana, the originating English-language station of Radio Maria USA.
WQMX is a commercial radio station licensed to Medina, Ohio, carrying a country format known as "FM 94.9 WQMX". Owned by Rubber City Radio Group, Inc., the station primarily serves the Akron metro area, but also can be heard in Greater Cleveland and Canton. WQMX's studios are located in Akron, while the station transmitter resides in the neighboring suburb of Copley Township. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WQMX's programming is also available online.
WONE-FM is a commercial radio station licensed to Akron, Ohio, featuring an AOR-leaning classic rock format known as "97.5 WONE". Owned by Rubber City Radio Group, Inc., the station primarily serves the Akron metro area. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WONE-FM broadcasts over one HD Radio channel and is available online. Both the studios and transmitter for WONE-FM are located in Akron.
WTUE is a classic rock formatted radio station with studios in Dayton. The station is owned and operated by iHeartMedia. Its transmitter is located in Moraine.
WOFX is a radio station licensed to Troy, New York. The station is owned by iHeartMedia and runs a sports format and is the Fox Sports Radio affiliate for the Capital District, Adirondacks, and Berkshires.
WSAI is a Cincinnati, Ohio commercial radio station. Owned and operated by iHeartMedia, its studios, as well as those of iHeartMedia's other Cincinnati stations, are in the Towers of Kenwood building next to I-71 in the Kenwood section of Sycamore Township, and its transmitter site is in Mount Healthy.
WIZE — branded Dayton's BIN 1340 — is a commercial all-news radio station in Springfield, Ohio owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. as part of their Dayton cluster. While servicing the Dayton metropolitan area, WIZE is also targeted towards Springfield, and their transmitter - and former studios - are located in Springfield. WIZE functions as the Dayton market affiliate for the Black Information Network. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WIZE streams via iHeartRadio.
WHIO – branded AM 1290 and News 95.7 WHIO – is a commercial talk AM radio station licensed to serve Dayton, Ohio and covering the Dayton metropolitan area. Owned by Cox Media Group, the WHIO studios are located at the Cox Media Center building in Dayton, while the transmitter is located in nearby Kettering. In addition to a standard analog transmission, WHIO is simulcast full-time on WHIO-FM (95.7) and is available online.
WTSO is a commercial AM radio station in Madison, Wisconsin. The station is owned and operated by iHeartMedia, Inc., and airs a sports format. From 2014 until February 1, 2020, WTSO was simulcast on FM translator W265CV at 100.9 MHz. W265CV now airs a 1960s-1970s oldies format as "U-100.9".
WING is a commercial radio station in Dayton, Ohio operating with 5,000 watts along with studios, offices and transmitter located on David Road in Kettering. It is the first full-time commercial radio station in Dayton. It is currently a local affiliate for ESPN Radio and the Ohio State Sports Network, but is best known and remembered as Dayton's first Top 40-formatted station.
WSHY is a commercial radio station in Lafayette, Indiana. It broadcasts a conservative talk radio format. WSHY is owned by Star City Broadcasting as part of a cluster with Fox/NBC affiliate WPBI-LD, ABC affiliate WPBY-LD, and sister radio stations WBPE, WYCM and WAZY-FM. All six stations share studios and offices at 3824 South 18th Street in Lafayette, with WSHY's transmitter also located at the site.
WLCO is a radio station broadcasting a classic rock format, as a simulcast of WQUS 103.1 FM Lapeer. Licensed to Lapeer, Michigan, it first began broadcasting under the WTHM call sign in 1962. Until December 2019, it broadcast a country music format using Westwood One's Real Country, which combines classic country favorites with select current titles. Prior to that, as WLSP, the station had aired satellite-fed adult standards from ABC, and, prior to that, Talk and Sports formats.
WHBO is a commercial radio station licensed to Pinellas Park, Florida, and serving the Tampa Bay area. The station is currently owned by Genesis Communications and it airs a conservative talk radio format, branded as "News Talk 1040". Much of the programming comes from Westwood One and Fox News Talk.
WCLI-FM is a classic country radio station, licensed to Enon, Ohio, and serving the Dayton area. The station is owned by Alpha Media. Its studios are located in Kettering, Ohio and its transmitter is in New Carlisle, Ohio, northeast of Dayton.
WGAM and WGHM are simulcasting radio stations broadcasting an oldies format named "Oldies Radio WGAM". WGAM is licensed to Manchester, New Hampshire, WGHM to Nashua, New Hampshire, United States. The stations serve southern New Hampshire. The stations are locally owned by Absolute Broadcasting, LLC.
WKJK is a radio station broadcasting a talk radio format. Licensed to Louisville, Kentucky, the station serves North-Central Kentucky and South-Central Indiana. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and features programming from iHeart subsidiary Premiere Networks as well as Compass Media Networks.
