Women's Match Racing World Championship

The Women's Match Racing World Championship is arranged by the International Sailing Federation. With female match racing included in the 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition for the first time this section of the sport is growing in popularity.

History

The first ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship was held in 1999 in Genoa, Italy after having been held at the 1998 ISAF World Sailing Games in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. [1]

For the 2010 edition the Sonar was used.

In 2011 and 2012 the class used was Elliott 6m as preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics, where Elliott 6m was an Olympic sailing class. [2]

World Sailing (WS) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Annemieke Marileen Bes is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented her country for the first time at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The Dutch Yngling helmed by Annelies Thies and crewed by Bes and Petronella de Jong took the 4th place. Bes returned to the Olympics, again in the Dutch Yngling, during the 2008 Olympics this time with fellow crewmember Merel Witteveen and helmsman Mandy Mulder. The Dutch Yngling team took the Silver Medal in Qingdao. Bes than switched to the Elliott 6m Match racing. Marcelien Bos-de Koning is a Dutch three-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist sports sailor. She represented her country at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Qingdao. With crew member Lobke Berkhout Bos-de Koning took the silver medal as helmsman in the Women's 470. Bos-de Koning returned as crew member to the 2012 Olympic match regatta's in Weymouth in the Elliott 6m. With helmsman Renee Groeneveld and fellow crew member Annemieke Bes Bos-de Koning took 8th place.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics</span>

Sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held 29 July – 11 August 2012 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. The 2012 sailing program consisted of a total of ten events. Eleven fleet races were scheduled off the coast at Weymouth Bay for each event, except for the 49er and the Elliott 6m classes. For the 49er class, a total of 16 races were scheduled. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) were scheduled as opening races and the last one as medal race. For the Elliott 6m a series of match races was scheduled. The sailing was done on different types of courses.

The Elliott 6m is an Olympic-class keelboat, designed by New Zealander, Greg Elliott. It was selected for the women's match racing event for the 2012 Olympics. The Elliott 6m carries a spinnaker pole and symmetric spinnaker which are considered more suitable for match racing.

Anna Elisabeth Östling is a Swedish Olympic sailor competing in match racing. She finished 12th in the Elliott 6m event at the 2012 Summer Olympics together with Malin Källström and Lotta Harrysson. She won the 2014 ISAF Women's Match Racing World Championship.

The Star World Championship are international sailing regattas in the Star class organized by the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association and sanctioned by World Sailing.

The ISAF Team Racing World Championship is a team racing event now held every two years by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). The first Team Racing World Championships were held in West Kirby, Great Britain in 1995. Great Britain won and so became the first nation to record its name on the ISAF Team Racing World Trophy, donated to ISAF by the West Kirby Sailing Club. A youth Championship began running in parallel with the main event since 2005. The appearance of West Kirby as the first championship host club reflects the club's pivotal role in promoting team racing – fostered by the activities of the Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society.

Andrew Blair Tuke is a New Zealand sailor who won the 2021 Americas Cup Held in Auckland and also won the 2017 Version held in Bermuda. He also won the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and the silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 49er class alongside Peter Burling.

Silja Lehtinen is a Finnish sailor. Lehtinen studies medicine at the University of Helsinki.

Molly Brigid O'Bryan Vandemoer is an American sailor who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics in the Elliott 6m class with Anna Tunnicliffe and Deborah Capozzi coming 5th overall. With Tunnicliffe and Capozzi, she also won the World title in 2011 and came second in 2012.

The 6 Metre World Cup are biennial international sailing regattas in the 6 Metre class organized by the International Six Metre Association.

Greg Elliott is a New Zealand sailing yacht designer. He is most notable for the Elliott 6m, an Olympic-class keelboat selected for the women's match racing event for the 2012 Olympics.
