Summary

The defending champion is Noah Lyles, same as he was last time and the time before that. He already has his three peat. He has never lost a 200 race in the World Championships. Usain Bolt won four in a row. With a bye, Lyles has run fewer races this season. Still he comes in as the world leader. And no Olympic gold medals. Letsile Tebogo won in 2024, Andre De Grasse before that. Kenny Bednarek has a collection of silvers over the last Olympics and World Championships.

In the heats, Bryan Levell was the fastest with 19.84, then Tapiwanashe Makarawu 19.91 and Courtney Lindsey 19.95. The semi finals were all in the high 19s until the final semi where Lyles blasted a 19.51. Sure Lyles has run faster four times, but only 5 other humans have ever gone that fast and Tebobo is the only one here in uniform. The semis saw the elimination of several famous names including DeGrasse, Lindsay, Gout Gout and Wayde van Niekerk. [2]

The final went off with 5 men separating from the other three. Coming off the turn Levell had developed almost a 1 metre lead on Lyles and Bednarek, with Tebogo slightly behind them and Hughes still in contention. In just 10 quick steps, Lyles and Bednarek moved from behind Levell to a metre ahead. Down the straightaway, put a little more gap on Bednarek. Tebogo closed down as well but couldn't quite catch Levell. [3]
