Abdusakur "Sakur" Mahail Tan (born July 13,1950 in Maimbung) is a Filipino politician and current governor of Sulu Province in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. He previously served as the Vice Governor of Sulu.
Tan is of Chinese-Tausug descent and was born on July 13,1950,in Maimbung,Sulu,the eldest child of Abubakar Tan (former mayor of Maimbung) and Satriya Mahail. He attended high school at the Notre Dame of Jolo for Boys and obtained a bachelor's degree in 1983 from the Notre Dame of Jolo College. [1]
He is married to Nurunisah Abubakar-Tan,former Vice Governor of Sulu (daughter of former Jolo mayor Habib Aminkandra N. Abubakar) and has five children. [2]
Tan established a political base in Jolo by aligning himself with the Abubakar and Isquerdo families. He served first as a municipal councilor of Jolo (1981–87),then as the representative of Sulu's first congressional district (1987–1992) and as governor (1996–2001). [1] He lost the 2001 election to MNLF leader Yusop Jikiri but won the governorship a second time in 2007 with 110,715 votes,according to COMELEC data. [3] In 2010 he won re-election,beating rivals Munir Arbison and Nur Misuari by over 24,000 votes. [4]
Tan was among 12 persons injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at the arrival area of Zamboanga International Airport in August 2010. The attack was suspected to target Tan himself. The explosion occurred a few days after a suspected member of the regional terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI),Edgar Malaydan,was arrested in Monkayo,Compostela Valley. [5]
The Sulu Archipelago is a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean,in the southwestern Philippines. The archipelago forms the northern limit of the Celebes Sea and southern limit of the Sulu Sea. The Sulu Archipelago islands are within the Mindanao island group,consisting of the provinces of Basilan,Sulu,and Tawi-Tawi;hence the archipelago is sometimes referred to as Basulta,derived from the first syllables of the three provinces.

Basilan is an island province of the Philippines. It is the largest and northernmost of the major islands of the Sulu Archipelago and is located just off the southern coast of Zamboanga Peninsula. Its capital is Lamitan. Basilan is home to three main ethnic groups,the indigenous Yakans,and the later-arriving Tausugs and Zamboangueños. The Yakans and Tausugs are predomimantly Muslim,while the Chavacanos are mainly Christian. There are also a number of smaller groups.
Abdulmunir "Munir" Mundoc Arbison is a Filipino politician who served as the Representative of Sulu's 2nd district from 2001 to 2010 and from 2016 to 2022. He was generally supportive of Philippine and U.S. operations against radical Islamic groups such as the Abu Sayyaf Group and of peace efforts to resolve the conflict in Mindanao. His brother is Allayon M. Arbison Jr.
Habib Tupay T. Loong was a Filipino politician who was a representative of Sulu's 1st congressional district in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). He is the older brother of Ben Tupay Loong,the current vice-governor,and himself served as Governor of Sulu for three terms. Together the "Loong Brothers" constitute a formidable political force in Sulu.
The Spanish–Moro conflict was a series of battles in the Philippines lasting several centuries. It began during the Spanish Philippines and lasted until the Spanish–American War,when Spain finally began to subjugate the Moro people after centuries of attempts to do so. Spain ultimately conquered portions of the Mindanao and Jolo islands and turned the Sultanate of Sulu into a protectorate,establishing geographic dominance over the region until the Spanish-American War. Moro resistance continued.

In the morning of January 27,2019,two bombs exploded at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo,Sulu,Philippines. Twenty people were killed and 102 others injured. The bombings took place a week after the autonomy plebiscite held on January 21 for the creation of Bangsamoro. It is believed that the Abu Sayyaf carried out the attacks,and the Islamic State claimed responsibility. President Rodrigo Duterte responded by issuing an "all-out war" directive against the Abu Sayyaf. The bombings were widely condemned by other countries and organizations.
Kusug Tausug is a political organization which has party-list representation in the House of Representatives of the Philippines. It seeks to represent the Tausūg indigenous people and other marginalized sectors.
