Ananya Chatterjee is an Indian actress who works in Bengali films. [3] Known for her role in Abahoman which won her a National Award. [4] She started her career as a TV actress. She acted in several TV serials and films, including three directed by Anjan Dutt. Her role as the muse of a married director in Abahoman, directed by Rituparno Ghosh, won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. [5]

Early life and education

Brought up in Kolkata, Chatterjee underwent education at G. D. Birla Centre and passed Class 10 board exams in 1994. Chatterjee studied microbiology at Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated undergraduate women's college of the University of Calcutta. [6]

Career

Chatterjee was a student in Mamata Shankar's dance institution, when she started her acting career on television, with the TV series Din Pratidin where she acted opposite Rudranil Ghosh, and went to on appear on soap operas like Tithir Atithi, Aleya, and Ananya. [6] Despite having no formal training in acting, her work was appreciated and she became a household name; [6] soon appearing in three telefilms directed by Anjan Dutt, John Johnny Janardan, Ek Din Darjeeling and Amar Baba. [7] Subsequently, she made her feature film debut with Sharan Dutta's thriller Raat Barota Paanch (2005). [5] After appearing in the comedy Aamra (2006) by Mainak Bhaumik, her next important film was debutant director Agnidev Chatterjee's, Probhu Nashto Hoye Jai (Lord, Let the Devil Steal My Soul), which premiered at the 13th Kolkata Film Festival. In 2009, appearing opposite veteran Soumitra Chatterjee in Suman Ghosh's Dwando she managed to stand her ground and then in Anup Sengupta's Mama Bhagne (2009) where again her performance was reviewed as "stellar". [9] [10] However, it was in Rituparno Ghosh's Abohoman , released in 2010, that established her as an actress of repute, [11] winning her first National Film Award for Best Actress. In the 2012 Bengali film Meghe Dhaka Tara directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Chatterjee played the role of Durga, wife of Nilkantha Bagchi. [12]

She performed the lead role in the popular Bengali serial Subarnolata airing on Zee Bangla. [13]

Rituparno Ghosh was an Indian film director, actor, writer and lyricist. After pursuing a degree in economics, he started his career as a creative artist at an advertising agency. Abohomaan is a 2010 Bengali-language film by Rituparno Ghosh, which explores the nuances of relationships through a married film director who falls in love with an actress who is the same age as his son. The film stars Deepankar De, Mamata Shankar, Ananya Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Riya Sen and is produced by Mahesh Ramanathan, Reliance Big Pictures. Rituparno Ghosh, Arghyakamal Mitra, Mahesh Ramanathan and Ananya Chatterjee won National Film Awards in 2010 for Best Director, Best Editor Best Bengali Film and Best Actress respectively. The film was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

<i>Gaaner Oparey</i> Indian Bengali musical TV serial

Gaaner Oparey is an Indian Bengali television serial which aired on Star Jalsha from 28 June 2010 to 16 April 2011. This TV musical marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. The concept was a brainchild of the Indian director Rituparno Ghosh. The songs were all popular Rabindra sangeets. Prosenjit Chatterjee launched an audio CD of its tracks on Mahalaya on 12 October 2015. On account of Rabindranath Tagore's 157th birthday, Star Jalsha added Gaaner Oparey on Disney+ Hotstar on 9 May 2018. It was re-aired on Star Jalsha during the 2020 lockdown period, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meghe Dhaka Tara is a 2013 Indian Bengali film directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee and made under Shree Venkatesh Films banners. The film is inspired by the life and works of Bengali film director Ritwik Ghatak. The entire film is in black and white except the last scene which has been shot in colour. In this film Saswata Chatterjee plays the character of Nilkantha Bagchi and Ananya Chatterjee plays the role of Durga, Nilkantha's wife. The film was released on 14 June 2013. Besides giving an account of Ghatak's life, the film also depicts the socio-political environment of contemporary West Bengal during the Tebhaga and Naxalite movements.

Sudipta Chakraborty is an Indian film and television actress who mostly works in Bengali cinema. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film Bariwali. She gained huge recognition for her portrayal as Tista in the long-running Ravi Ojha's Bengali daily soap opera Khela. Chakraborty had participated as contastant in the first season of Bigg Boss Bangla (2013), in which she was the top four finalist. She is also an anchor, talk show host, casting director, and an acting coach.

It was produced by Shree Venkatesh Films. It went off-air on 1 June 2019, airing 661 episodes. It was re-aired on Star Jalsha and Star Jalsha HD during lockdown period, due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Sani Ghose Ray is an Indian Film director and producer based out of Kolkata. He is also one of the founder members of the production house Acropoliis Entertainment along with a line production company Greyscale Entertainment.
