Bamboo in the Four Seasons is a late 15th century Japanese folding screen painting spanning six panels, attributed to Tosa Mitsunobu, but definitively within the Tosa school. [1]
Depicting bamboo at different stages of growth throughout the seasons, the piece presents a transitory state, both of the plant, the seasons, as well as that of the evolution of the Tosa school and Muromachi period styles, which adapted the bamboo motif from previous Chinese paintings. [2]
It is currently owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1975. [1]
Bamboo painting has been a common motif in Chinese painting from the Song and Yuan dynasty, depicted through paintings by Emperor Huizong in the 12th century. [3] [4]
One such prominent figure in bamboo painting was Li Kan, whose paintings gained prominence as he joined the Yuan Court, and as such wrote treatises on how to paint bamboo. [4]
His style was passed on to his son Li Shixing (1283-1328). Within the first half of the 14th century, intellectual exchange between the Chinese Zen and the Japanese Zen schools intensified, which included the importation, followed by evolution of the painting style amongst the Muromachi elite. [5]
The prominence of an independent style in Japan grew more prominent after the Heian period, with the emergence of Yamato-e, of which the Tosa school became renowned for, while maintaining infusion of ideas from China, a style known as kara-e. [6] Bamboo in the Four Seasons is seen as an early-stage work by the Tosa School. [2]
Japanese influences on Bamboo in the Four Seasons, depicts the transitory state of bamboo growth, from shoots to mature plant in the same space, from spring to winter, seen from right to left, the gold leaf backdrop conveying the concept of space. Impermanence and cycles is a prominent theme by showcasing the life cycle, adapted from Shinto and Buddhist precepts. [6] [7]
Over the course of centuries, the Tosa school's aesthetics would be studied and give way to Rinpa school in the Edo period. [2]
The time period of Bamboo in the Four Seasons is contemporary to that of the career of Tosa Mitsunobu (1434-1525), though it is uncertain if the painting is attributed to him, even though it was made by the Tosa School. [2]
Efforts to construct the evolution and influences of Tosa school is only recent in scope. [2]
The folding screen would have been a subject of study during the Azuchi–Momoyama and Edo period, thru open study by independent painters, machi-eshi (townsman painters). Observation and study would give way and influence towards Rinpa style, with prominent artists including Tawaraya Sōtatsu. [2]
Owned previously by Yabumoto Shōgorō of Osaka, Bamboo in the Four Seasons would be acquired by art collector Harry G.C. Packard, who would then gift the painting to the MET in 1975. As of today, the panels are under designated accession number 1975.268.44,45. [1]
Prominently rotated as part of MET's permanent collection, the painting has seen special exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Osaka Castle from October-November 1986, as well as an exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art on 16th-century Japanese art in October-December 1991. Chinese art is visual art that originated in or is practiced in China, Greater China or by Chinese artists. Art created by Chinese residing outside of China can also be considered a part of Chinese art when it is based on or draws on Chinese culture, heritage, and history. Early "Stone Age art" dates back to 10,000 BC, mostly consisting of simple pottery and sculptures. After that period, Chinese art, like Chinese history, was typically classified by the succession of ruling dynasties of Chinese emperors, most of which lasted several hundred years. The Palace Museum in Beijing and the National Palace Museum in Taipei contains extensive collections of Chinese art.
Ink wash painting ; is a type of Chinese ink brush painting which uses washes of black ink, such as that used in East Asian calligraphy, in different concentrations. It emerged during the Tang dynasty of China (618–907), and overturned earlier, more realistic techniques. It is typically monochrome, using only shades of black, with a great emphasis on virtuoso brushwork and conveying the perceived "spirit" or "essence" of a subject over direct imitation. Ink wash painting flourished from the Song dynasty in China (960–1279) onwards, as well as in Japan after it was introduced by Zen Buddhist monks in the 14th century. Some Western scholars divide Chinese painting into three periods: times of representation, times of expression, and historical Oriental art. Chinese scholars have their own views which may be different; they believe that contemporary Chinese ink wash paintings are the pluralistic continuation of multiple historical traditions.
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world. Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guó huà, meaning "national painting" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century. It is also called danqing. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.
The Kanō school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. The Kanō school of painting was the dominant style of painting from the late 15th century until the Meiji period which began in 1868, by which time the school had divided into many different branches. The Kanō family itself produced a string of major artists over several generations, to which large numbers of unrelated artists who trained in workshops of the school can be added. Some artists married into the family and changed their names, and others were adopted. According to the historian of Japanese art Robert Treat Paine, "another family which in direct blood line produced so many men of genius ... would be hard to find".
Ogata Kōrin was a Japanese landscape illustrator, lacquerer, painter, and textile designer of the Rinpa School.
Sesshū Tōyō, also known simply as Sesshū (雪舟), was a Japanese Zen monk and painter who is considered a great master of Japanese ink painting. Initially inspired by Chinese landscapes, Sesshū's work holds a distinctively Japanese style that reflects Zen Buddhist aesthetics. His prominent work captured images of landscapes, portraits, and birds and flowers paintings, infused with Zen Buddhist beliefs, flattened perspective, and emphatic lines.
Kanō Motonobu was a Japanese painter and calligrapher. He was a member of the Kanō school of painting. Through his political connections, patronage, organization, and influence he was able to make the Kanō school into what it is today. The system was responsible for the training of a great majority of painters throughout the Edo period (1603–1868). After his death, he was referred to as Kohōgen (古法眼).
Tosa Mitsuoki was a Japanese painter.
The Tosa school of Japanese painting was founded in the early Muromachi period, and was devoted to yamato-e, paintings specializing in subject matter and techniques derived from ancient Japanese art, as opposed to schools influenced by Chinese art, notably the Kanō school (狩野派). Tosa school paintings are characterised by "areas of flat opaque colour enclosed by simple outlines, where drawing is precise and conventional", with many narrative subjects from Japanese literature and history. However, by the 17th century both Tosa and Kanō artists broadened their range, and the distinction between these and other schools became less clear.
Tenshō Shūbun was a Japanese Zen Buddhist monk and painter of the Muromachi period.
Yamato-e (大和絵) is a style of Japanese painting inspired by Tang dynasty paintings and fully developed by the late Heian period. It is considered the classical Japanese style. From the Muromachi period, the term yamato-e has been used to distinguish work from contemporary Chinese-style paintings kara-e (唐絵), which were inspired by Chinese Song and Yuan-era ink wash paintings.
Rinpa is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting. It was created in 17th century Kyoto by Hon'ami Kōetsu (1558–1637) and Tawaraya Sōtatsu. Roughly fifty years later, the style was consolidated by brothers Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716) and Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743).
The Higashiyama culture is a segment of Japanese culture that includes innovations in architecture, the visual arts and theatre during the late Muromachi period. It originated and was promoted in the 15th century by the shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, after he retired to his villa in the eastern hills of capital city Kyoto.
Yun Shouping, also known as Nantian, was a Chinese calligrapher and painter. He was a major artist of the early Chinese Qing dynasty. Along with the Four Wangs and Wú Lì, he was regarded as one of the "Six Masters" of the Qing period.
Japanese painting is one of the oldest and most highly refined of the Japanese visual arts, encompassing a wide variety of genres and styles. As with the history of Japanese arts in general, the long history of Japanese painting exhibits synthesis and competition between native Japanese aesthetics and the adaptation of imported ideas, mainly from Chinese painting, which was especially influential at a number of points; significant Western influence only comes from the 19th century onwards, beginning at the same time as Japanese art was influencing that of the West.
Muqi or Muxi, also known as Fachang, was a Chinese Chan Buddhist monk and painter who lived in the 13th century, around the end of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). Today, he is considered to be one of the greatest Chan painters in history. His ink paintings, such as the Daitokuji triptych and Six Persimmons are regarded as essential Chan paintings. Muqi's style of painting has also profoundly impacted painters from later periods to follow, especially monk painters in Japan.
Tosa Mitsunobu was a Japanese painter, the founder of the Tosa school of Japanese painting. Born into a family that had traditionally served as painters to the Imperial court, he was head of the court painting bureau from 1493 to 1496. In 1518, he was appointed chief artist to the Ashikaga shogunates.
Bird-and-flower painting, called Huaniaohua in Chinese, is a kind of Chinese painting with a long tradition in China and is considered one of the treasures of Chinese culture. The huaniaohua was named after its subject matter. It originated in the Tang dynasty where it gained popularity, matured by the end of that period and during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, and fully reached its peak during the Song dynasty. Most huaniaohua paintings belong to the scholar-artist style of Chinese painting. In the coming centuries, the genre gained popularity and spread throughout the East Asian cultural sphere. It also had an influence on Iranian painting in the golomorgh genre of illustration for book covers and illuminated manuscripts.
Wang Ximeng was a Chinese painter during the Northern Song period, in the early twelfth century. A prodigy, Wang was a student at the imperial court's school of paintings, where he was noticed by Emperor Huizong of Song, who saw Wang's talent and personally taught him. In 1113, at the age of 18, he created his only surviving work, a long blue-green scroll called A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. He died at the age of 23.
Early Snow on the River is a Chinese landscape painting created by artist Zhao Gan (趙幹) created in the 10th century, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. It is a prominent example of the shanshui genre, dedicated to mountains and waterscapes done with brush and ink from the era, and is the only extant surviving piece by Zhao Gan. From the seal impressions annotating the piece, it was a prominent piece in the collections of Chinese imperial families across multiple dynasties. It is currently held by the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan.
