Barh Lok Sabha constituency was a Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar from 1957 to 2008. This constituency was created in 1957 when Patna East Lok Sabha was renamed as Barh Lok Sabha.

Contents

Nitish Kumar was elected five times from Barh (बाढ़), from 1989 to 1999. He lost from Barh in 2004 but won that year from Nalanda. [1] Tarkeshwari Sinha was another prominent politician to have represented this seat.

About

In 1957, the erstwhile Patna East Lok Sabha constituency was renamed as Barh Lok Sabha. The Barh parliamentary constituency used to consist Chandi Assembly constituency as well as Harnaut Assembly constituency, both located in Nalanda district of Bihar. However, the delimitation of 2009 dissolved the Chandi Assembly constituency, which ceased to exist thereafter. The area constituting this constituency was included into Harnaut Assembly constituency and Harnaut Assembly constituency was included in the Nalanda Lok Sabha constituency seperating it from Barh. [2]

Tarkeshwari Sinha was an Indian politician and independence activist from Bihar. Among the first female politicians of the country, she took active role in the Quit India Movement. At the age of 26, she was elected to the 1st Lok Sabha from Patna East constituency in 1952. Subsequently, she was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957, 1962 and 1967 from Barh constituency. She was the first female Deputy Finance Minister in the union cabinet led by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru from 1958-64. She had also led a delegation to the U.N. and Tokyo. Gulzar’s critically acclaimed movie, Aandhi was partly inspired by Tarkeshwari Sinha, apart from Indira Gandhi.
