Burmese/Myanmar hip hop is one of the most successful music genres in Myanmar today, [1] and perhaps the most popular form of music among the urban youth of Yangon and Mandalay.
Until 2000, rock and roll was the dominant music genre in Myanmar. The Burmese hip hop scene started in the late 1980s with the rapper Myo Kyawt Myaing although songs were plain rapping music rather than typical hip hop. In late 1990s, a Yangon-based four-member crew named Acid started introducing old school hip hop in night clubs of Yangon, and became popular among Yangon's youth. Acid, widely considered to be the pioneers of Burmese hip-hop, [2] made their debut in 2000 with Sa-Tin-Gyin (Beginning).
Their success attracted other hip-hop artists and groups, now known as the "first generation" of Burmese hip-hop, like Theory (Barbu and Thxa Soe), NS (Kyaw Thu Soe and Lin Lin) and Too Big. Most of the first generation artists used old school hip-hop. Still, hip hop was new to the Burmese and apart from Acid and Theory, not widely accepted yet by the public at large (or censors).
After Acid's breakthrough, a group named "9mm" moved the style of Burmese hip hop to a new level. Although the group's underground music was well known to the youth, most of their songs did not pass the Burmese censor board, and the group never released an own album under 9mm. Later, because of the group's alleged political activism, even the name 9mm was banned by the censor board. [3]
Other notable groups were Project-1,Byauk-Oh (Firecracker), Examplz,G -Family, On-track,L.E.E, and Cyclone. M.H.A. (Myanmar HipHop Association) was formed unofficially. Many youths joined M.H.A. and inspired to becoming hip hop artists someday. J-Me, Bigg-Y, G-Tone, Kyak Pha, YaTha, Thuta aye and others Rappers In Myanmar.
Since late 2006, new artists like Jouk Jack, Kyaw Htut Swe claimed themselves as "Third generation". They formed a group called VIP (Rock$tar) with Ah Boy, Htein Win P Crew and Hlwan Paing.In late 2008 and early 2009, many other third generation groups released their sample albums.
Some rappers have been detained or called for question by the government, especially by the military regime. Zayar Thaw served 6 years prison term until 17 May 2011 [4] because he is the member of Generation Wave (youth anti-gov group). [5] His group-mate (not a member of GW, though many thought he was) Yan Yan Chan was arrested and released from a temporary detained.[ when? ] [6] The name 9mm is banned from use in public because they distributed sample CDs of underground group MFG in one of their performance. [7] G-Tone from Cyclone called to question during performing in concert. [3]

16 time signature. In Burmese, music segments are combined into patterns, and then into verses, making it a multi-level hierarchical system. Various levels are manipulated to create a song. Harmony in Mahagita is known as twe-lone, which is similar to a chord in western music. For example, C is combined with F or G.

Known for his wicked puns against the government which is a military junta, Zarganar, whose name translates to "tweezers", is widely considered to be the most popular comedian and satirist in Myanmar.
Insein Prison is located in Yangon Division, near Yangon (Rangoon), the old capital of Myanmar. From 1988 to 2011 it was run by the military junta of Myanmar, named the State Law and Order Restoration Council from 1988 to 2003 and the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) from 2003 to 2011, and was used largely to repress political dissidents.
Nay Win is a Burmese rapper, singer and songwriter. He is considered one of the most commercially successful hip hop singers in Burmese music scene and has jokingly referred to himself as the "Godfather of Myanmar Hip Hop" because of his clothing brand OMG.
MNL Cup Grand Royal 2009 is the inaugural knock-out club football tournament of the Myanmar National League. The tournament, held at the Aung San Stadium and the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon between 16 May and 5 July 2009, was contested by all eight clubs of the newly formed professional league. Yadanabon FC finished on top, one point ahead of Yangon United FC in group stage. On 5 July 2009, Yadanabon defeated Yangon United in the cup final on penalty shootout, to become the reigning champions of the league.
Acid is a Burmese hip hop group often credited with releasing Burma's first hip hop album, Beginning, in 2000. Two of the group's founders were later imprisoned for the group's allegedly pro-democracy lyrics.
Phyo Zeya Thaw (Burmese: ဖြိုးဇေယျာသော်; pronounced[pʰjòzèjàθɔ̀], also referred to as Zeya Thaw was a Burmese politician and hip hop recording artist who was detained and executed due to the perceived anti-government messages in his lyrics. Amnesty International designated him as a prisoner of conscience. He served as a member of Pyithu Hluttaw, the Lower House of the Burmese parliament. Phyo Zeya Thaw, alongside opposition leader and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, was elected to the lower house on 1 April 2012.
Yan Yan Chan is a Burmese hip hop singer, pioneer of Burmese hip hop, and pro-democracy activist. He is a founding member of Acid, Burma's first hip hop group. He is also one of the coaches from The Voice Myanmar.
Generation Wave is a Burmese pro-democracy youth movement founded by Min Yan Naing @ Win Htut, Moe Thwe, hip-hop star Phyo Zeya Thaw, and Aung Zay Phyo. This movement emerged alongside a collection of pro-democracy groups following the 2007 Saffron Revolution and was situated in the broader context of public disenchantment with the National League for Democracy, the most promising pro-democracy group following the 1990 General Election. Thus, the Generation Wave served as a continuation and reinvigoration of the pro-democracy movement in Burma as well as a means to inspire youth engagement in political activism.
The Me N Ma Girls is the first all-girl pop hip hop dance ensemble from Myanmar discovered by Australian dancer Nicole "Nikki" May and Burmese entrepreneur U Moe Kyaw in 2010. The group currently consists of four Burmese women: Ah Moon, Cha Cha, Htike Htike, and Kimi. The girls released their first cover album in 2010, "Year of the Tiger Girls." In 2011, the group split from Kyaw and was renamed as the "Me N Ma Girls.In 2016, the group renamed again "Me N Ma Girls" to "MyaNmar Girls"

Art of Myanmar refers to visual art created in Myanmar (Burma). Ancient Burmese art was influenced by India and China, and was often religious in nature, ranging from Hindu sculptures in the Thaton Kingdom to Theravada Buddhist images in the Sri Ksetra Kingdom. The Bagan period saw significant developments in many art forms from wall paintings and sculptures to stucco and wood carving. After a dearth of surviving art between the 14th and 16th century, artists created paintings and sculptures that reflect the Burmese culture. Burmese artists have been subjected to government interference and censorship, hindering the development of art in Myanmar. Burmese art reflects the central Buddhist elements including the mudra, Jataka tales, the pagoda, and Bodhisattva.
Hlwan Paing is a Burmese singer-songwriter, composer, and actor. He is considered one of the most successful Burmese singers, and rose to fame with his debut album Done Pyan (Rocket), which was a duo album with Bobby Soxer. Hlwan Paing is also an active gaming streamer and started online streaming in 2018 by using his online alias Bo Paing Gyi.
Bobby Soxer also known as Htet Htet, is a Burmese singer, songwriter, and actress. She is considered one of the pioneering female hip-hop vocalists in Myanmar and has earned the title of "Myanmar's Hip Hop Queen."
Ah Boy is a Burmese hip hop singer-songwriter, pioneer of the third generation of Burmese hip hop and businessman of Sino-Mon descent. He is the former lead vocalist of the popular Burmese hip hop band Rock$tar.
Wa Lone is a Reuters journalist and children's author who, with fellow reporter Kyaw Soe Oo, was arrested on 12 December 2017 in Myanmar because of their investigation into the Inn Din massacre. A police witness testified that their arrest was a case of entrapment. It is believed to have been intended to intimidate journalists.
