The Malaysian hip hop is a hip hop music performed in Malaysia. Many of Malaysian hip hop artistes performed songs mostly in English, but also rhymed in their native Malay language. [1]
Malaysian hip hop music started in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rap groups such as KRU, 4U2C, NICO, Naughtius Maximus, and HQA, but their so-called "rap music" was not accepted by the mainstream community and so they had to change to a more pop-ish sound. [2] [3] In 1991, local rapper HQA released the classic album Baguvix. At around the same time, another group called Krash Kozz was the only group to introduce the new jack swing hip hop sound to Malaysian listeners, but they disbanded after their third album, New Jack The Street Beat was released.
Those were trying times, when the pioneers of the local hip hop scene were trying hard to break the monotony of rock music, love ballads and pop sounds, which are staples in the Malaysian music scene, with the fans of these genres refusing to accept this new form of music. However, the younger generation, especially those in the urban areas, were more curious and receptive; they were more positively in-tuned to receive this new culture that was creating waves across the globe, which was further expedited and cemented by the introduction of records from American hip hop artists like the N.W.A, Brand Nubian, Gang Starr, Cypress Hill, and many others.
In 1994, Naughtius Maximus, Malaysia's first genuine hip hop collective, was formed by the merger of four hip hop groups - Whyness, Deceased, Reffugeez and Under Pressure. A year later, they release their only self-titled album which was touted as Malaysia's first genuine hip hop album. However, not long after its release, Malaysian public broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) banned 9 of the album's 13 tracks because it is too "westernized". As a result, Naughtius Maximus disbanded in 1996 with some of its members left to pursue their studies and concentrated on their own careers. The group later reformed with only Mista Rem, Spit and Jungle Jerry as the remaining members.
The Malaysian music scene was dominated by these poppy-sounding groups until 1995–1996, when Poetic Ammo—composed of Yogi B, Point Blanc, C. Loco and Land Slyde—came out with their album It's a Nice Day to Be Alive. Their first hit, "Everything Changes", revolutionized the local music industry. There were also groups from the underground scene that have established themselves such as The Rebel Scum, but it was Poetic Ammo that "made it big".
One of the "powerhouses" of hip hop in Malaysia is Too Phat, which consists of Malique and Joe Flizzow. [4] They were signed to EMI International's Positive Tone division and produced their first hit album, Whutadilly, and their first single was "Too Phat Baby".
Hip-hop has come a long way in Malaysia as seen from its growing industry and the success it has garnered in the mainstream music landscape. In 2010, three of Malaysia's biggest rappers—SonaOne, Joe Flizzow and Altimet—collaborated on a track called "Who Do It Better". In the song, Altimet, who was wearing an Eric B & Rakim T-shirt, raps in Malay about being schooled by hip-hop's earliest stars. In 2014, Joe Flizzow and SonaOne worked together on a track called "Apa Khabar" that talks about how far hip-hop has come in Malaysia. The track won two national music awards. That same year, SonaOne, was awarded the best song for "No More", the first time an English song managed to clinch the title at the Malaysian Anugerah Industri Muzik. [5]
Australian hip hop traces its origins to the early 1980s and is largely inspired by hip hop and other urban musical genres from the United States. As the form matured, Australian hip hop has become a commercially viable style of music which is no longer restricted to the creative underground, with artists such as The Kid LAROI, Manu Crooks, ONEFOUR, Iggy Azalea, Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Eso and Youngn Lipz, having achieved notable fame. Australian hip hop is still primarily released through independent record labels, which are often owned and operated by the artists themselves. Despite its genesis as an offshoot of American hip hop, Australian hip hop has developed a distinct personality that reflects its evolution as an Australian musical style.
Korean hip hop, also known as K-hip hop or K-rap, is a subgenre of Korean popular music.
Poetic Ammo was a Malaysian rap/hip-hop group. It consisted of Yogeswaran Veerasingam, Chandrakumar Balakrishnan, Nicholas Ong, and Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan. Although most of the group's songs were written in English, the group also released tracks in Malay, Tamil, and Cantonese.
Anugerah Industri Muzik, commonly known by the acronym AIM, is an award ceremony which celebrates the Malaysian music industry. The award is organized by the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) and was first held on 15 December 1993. It is Malaysia's equivalent of the Grammy awards. The award is not only focused on Malay-language music produced in Malaysia, but also English, Chinese, and Indian-language music. Separate awards were introduced for the latter two language music subcategories in 1999 and 2013 respectively. One of these, known as the AIM Chinese Music Awards, was held in 1999 and 2001 before encountering a twelve-year hiatus due to insufficient funds.)

Pop Shuvit is a Malaysian rap rock band. Comprising Moots! (MC), JD, AJ, Rudy (drums) and DJ Uno, the band who got its name from a skateboarding trick of almost the same name began making waves in the local music scene in late 2001 and since then, has had 5 successful releases under their belt and gained a sizeable fanbase in Asia notably in Malaysia, Japan, Thailand and Singapore. Known for their adrenaline-packed live shows and eclectic blend of hip hop and rock, Pop Shuvit are being touted as Asia's leading hip hop rock band. They also founded a South east Asian collective called Project E.A.R with a show stopping performance at the MTV asia awards in 2008 together with dandee and thaitanium (Thailand), slapshock (Philippines), Saint Loco (Indonesia) and Daly Ahli FIqir (Singapore).
Sona Family is a London-based musical quartet. They have been said to sound "like The Black Eyed Peas infused with traditional Indian bhangra music". They combine urban music, hip hop, R&B and dancehall with their own upbringing as UK Desis. Headed by producer/writer Harry Sona, Sona Family consists of rapper/singer/producer Mr Riz, female singer/rapper Kazz & DJ/producer JC.
The Gambian hip hop scene is a relatively new scene in African hip hop which developed in the mid-1990s and was heavily influenced by American hip hop and Senegalese hip hop. Gambian hip-hop has been heavily influenced by international music scene including worldbeat, Senegalese wolof music, and American hip hop, as well as traditional Gambian mbalax and n'daga music. Dominican merengue and Jamaican reggae, ragga, and dancehall have also influenced the development of Gambian hip-hop.
Trisno Ishak, known professionally as Trisno, is a singer and teacher from Singapore. In 2000, he was the lead singer of Urban Xchange, which evolved to Parking Lot Pimp. He has performed alongside Stacy Orrico, Jamie Cullum, Jay Sean, Missy Higgins and Ben and Joey of The Click Five. He collaborated with John Lennon, Brian McKnight, Mr. Cheeks from The Lost Boyz, Malaysian hip-hop duo Too Phat, Malaysian singer Camelia, Singaporean rapper Sheikh Haikel, and Taiwanese pop singer Evonne. With his sizzling buttery voice, Trisno has captivated local and international audience. Coupled along with his versatility in music and adept talent at working the crowd, he is described as "the guy who was born to be a performer".
Hip hop music or hip-hop music, also known as rap music and formerly known as disco rap, is a genre of popular music that originated in the Bronx borough of New York City in the early 1970s. It consists of stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records, and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.
Kartel Records Sdn Bhd is a Malaysian hip-hop record label, dealing predominantly in hip-hop/R&B music, founded by rapper/entrepreneur Joe Flizzow in 2005. In 2008, Kartel Records entered into a distribution agreement with Warner Music Group Malaysia, enabling the record label to market its artists to a wider audience.

"Dirgahayu" (Perpetuity) is a duet single by Malaysian artists, Faizal Tahir and Siti Nurhaliza, released on 12 August 2016. It was released to serve as a theme song for a 100-episode Malaysian television series, Lara Aishah. Co-written by Faizal himself, it was recorded in July 2016 before it was released a month later.
Mikael Adam bin Muhammad Rafee Michel Lozach or Mikael Adam Lozach, better known as SonaOne is a Malaysian singer-songwriter and actor. He gained recognition through the songs "I Don't Care" with Mal Karmal, "No More" and with rapper Joe Flizzow "Havoc" and "Hello". In 2014, he won an award in the 29th Anugerah Juara Lagu. His song "No More" was awarded the best song in the 21st Anugerah Industri Muzik. It made him a composer who has won two major awards in the same year, with the other being Adnan Abu Hassan.
