The County of Bosanquet is a cadastral unit in the Australian state of South Australia that covers land both in the north of the Eyre Peninsula and to the peninsula's north. It was proclaimed on 23 October 1913 and was named after Sir Day Hort Bosanquet, the Governor of South Australia from 1909 to 1914. [1] [2]
The county covers land extending from the southern end of Lake Gairdner in the north-east to the southern side of the Gawler Ranges in the south-west. Most of its extent is within the Eyre Peninsula because the peninsula’s northern boundary passes through the county in an east-west direction. It is bounded to the west by the counties of Dufferin and Robinson, to the south by the County of Le Hunte, and to the east by the County of Hore-Ruthven. [6] [1] [2] [5] [7]
There are no formal settlements within the county. The following gazetted localities, mainly based on pastoral leases, are within the county: Thurlga and parts of Buckleboo, Carriewarloo, Cooyerdoo, Corunna Station, Gawler Ranges, Hiltaba, Kolendo, Lake Gairdner, Mount Ive, and Yardea. A road labelled as Nonning Road and then as Hiltaba Road passes through the county in an east-west direction on its way from Iron Knob in the east. Other roads passing through the county include the Mail Run Road, which runs from Nonning Road in the east to Hiltaba Road in the west via the locality of Thurlga, Buckleboo Road which runs from the Eyre Highway in the south to Mail Run Road in the north, Yardea Road which runs from the Eyre Highway in the south via the locality of Gawler Ranges to Hiltaba Road in the north, and Skull Camp Tank Road which runs from the junction of Nonning and Hiltaba Roads towards Kingoonya in the north. The county's land is mainly used for primary production and conservation, the latter including the Gawler Ranges National Park and Lake Gairdner National Park. [7] [2]
While most of the county is located within the state’s Pastoral Unincorporated Area and the state’s Far North region, the Hundred of Pildappa is entirely located within the local government area of Wudinna District Council and the state’s Eyre and Western region. [7] [2] [4] [3]
The County of Bosanquet was proclaimed on 23 October 1913 and was named after Sir Day Hort Bosanquet who was the Governor of South Australia from 18 February 1909 to 22 March 1914. [1] [2]
As of 2014, the Hundred of Pildappa ( 32°42′05″S135°13′30″E / 32.701290°S 135.224920°E ) has been the only hundred proclaimed within the county. [12]
It was proclaimed on 23 October 1913. It covers an area of 260 square kilometres (100 sq mi) and is named after Pildappa Hill (Pildappa Rock), a feature located within the hundred and whose name is derived from a "native word for 'rockwater'". Its extent is almost entirely occupied by the gazetted locality of Minnipa, with a portion of its south-east corner being within the gazetted locality of Yaninee. [13] [7] [14]
The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded by the Spencer Gulf on the east, the Great Australian Bight on the west, and the Gawler Ranges to the north.
Kimba is a rural service town on the Eyre Highway at the top of Eyre Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia. At the 2016 census, Kimba had a population of 629 and it has an annual rainfall of 348 millimetres (13.7 in). There is an 8-metre (26 ft) tall statue of a galah beside the highway, marking halfway between the east and west coasts of Australia. The Gawler Ranges are north of the highway near the town.

The Gawler Ranges are a range of stoney hills in South Australia to the north of Eyre Peninsula. The Eyre Highway skirts the south of the ranges. The Gawler Ranges National Park is in the ranges north of Kimba and Wudinna. The ranges are covered by the Gawler Ranges Native Title Claim.
Wudinna District Council is a rural local government area on central Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Its seat is Wudinna, on the Eyre Highway, 580 kilometres (360 mi) west of Adelaide. The district's economy is largely driven by agriculture, mainly cereal crops, with beef and sheep commonly farmed as well.
Yardea Station is a pastoral lease in the Australian state of South Australia that operates as a sheep station, now within the Gawler Ranges National Park. Paney Station became part of Yardea Station in 1904.
Pinkawillinie is a locality in the north of Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It is a rural grain and grazing area in marginal country near Goyder's Line within the District Council of Kimba. It draws its name from the cadastral Hundred bearing the same name which is mostly included in the modern bounded locality, however the locality includes several other Hundreds and the Pinkawillinie Conservation Park, all within the Kimba region.
Gawler Ranges is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on Eyre Peninsula about 380 kilometres north-west of the Adelaide city centre and about 48 kilometres north of the town centre of Wudinna and which is associated with the protected area known as the Gawler Ranges National Park.
The Hundred of Moody is a cadastral unit of hundred located in the Australian state of South Australia in the southern part of the Eyre Peninsula and which covers an area of 300 square kilometres (117 sq mi) including the full extent of the locality of Moody and the northern end of the locality of Ungarra.

Hiltaba Nature Reserve is located in the north of the Eyre Peninsula on the western edge of the Gawler Ranges, South Australia. It is situated on a former pastoral lease known as Hiltaba, or Hiltaba Station, that had operated as a sheep station. It is owned by the Nature Foundation, who purchased the property in 2012.
