During the middle of May 1986, the monsoon trough of low pressure became very active, between the island nations of Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands. [1] Two depressions subsequently developed within this monsoon trough, with the first going on to become Typhoon Lola in the Northern Hemisphere. [2] The second depression developed within the Southern Hemisphere and was first noted by the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) during May 15, while it was located about 165 km (105 mi) to the north of Malaita in the Solomon Islands. [3] During the next day, as the depression moved eastwards, it showed signs of weakening with clouds associated with the system disintegrating. [1] However, the system remained in an area favourable for Tropical cyclogenesis, before the system re-intensified and developed two weak feeder bands. [1] The United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) subsequently started to issue warnings on the system and designated it as Tropical Cyclone 33P early on May 17, after the depression had developed gale-force winds. [4] During that day, the system moved south-westwards and acquired the characteristics of a tropical cyclone, before it was named Namu by the FMS, while it was located about 55 km (35 mi) to the north of Sikaiana. [5] [6]

After being named, the system continued to move south-westwards and continued to intensify, before an eye feature was reported as it passed over Malaita during May 18. [1] [3] After Namu had crossed Malaita, the FMS estimated that Namu had developed a small ring of hurricane-force winds, about 20–30 km (10–20 mi) from the centre. [1] They also estimated that the system had peaked with 10-minute sustained wind speeds of 150 km/h (90 mph), which made it a Category 3 severe tropical cyclone on the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale. [7] At around this time, the JTWC estimated that Namu had peaked with 1-minute sustained wind speeds of 155 km/h (100 mph), which made it equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale. [4] [7] The system subsequently crossed Guadalcanal and 160°E where it moved into the Australian region during May 19, where a broad and ragged eye became visible in satellite imagery but quickly became obscured by high cloud. [1] Namu subsequently came under the influence of high level westerly winds, which steered the system on a south-easterly track and back into the South Pacific basin. [1] After it moved back into the South Pacific basin, Namu accelerated towards southern Vanuatu and rapidly weakened into a depression, as cold air from the subtropics wrapped into the system. [8] Namu subsequently dissipated during May 22, after it had merged into an eastwards moving trough of low pressure near south-eastern Vanuatu. [1] [2]

Effects

Severe Tropical Cyclone Namu impacted the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia and caused over 100 deaths, as well as varying amounts of damage to the island nations. [5] The Solomon Islands was the first island nation to be impacted by Cyclone Namu, where it became the worst tropical cyclone on record and killed over 100 people. [1] After the Solomon Islands had been impacted, the FMS issued special weather bulletins for Vanuatu during May 21, as Namu's projected track took it near or over the southern islands of the island nation. [1] However, these were terminated later that day after Namu had rapidly weakened into a tropical depression. [1] The system also caused heavy rainfall in New Caledonia, which lead to various roads being temporarily closed. [9] As a direct result of its impacts, the name Namu was later retired from the lists of tropical cyclone names for the South Pacific by the World Meteorological Organization. [10]

Solomon Islands

The FMS started to issue special weather bulletins for the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) during May 15, which advised that the system had gale-force winds associated with it and that it would affect Malaita and smaller islands. [1] As a result, the SIMS issued a gale warning before the bulletins were suspended during the next day, after the system weakened and it became doubtful that gales were associated with the depression. [1] [6] After the depression was named Namu during May 17, the FMS resumed issuing the weather bulletins, which advised the SIMS of the threat posed by Namu to Malaita, Guadalcanal, San Cristobal and other smaller islands. [1] Over the next few days, these bulletins were revised accordingly and advised the SIMS which areas would be affected by gale, storm and hurricane-force winds and the threat of flooding from rain or storm surge. [1] These bulletins were subsequently used by the SIMS to prepare various gale and tropical cyclone warnings, which were subsequently broadcast in English and Pidgin around the clock by the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation. [6] [11] As the system approached and moved over the island nation on May 18, the Solomon Islands National Disaster Council was convened to oversee the relief effort. [12] Within the Solomon Islands, initial expectations were for a run of the mill tropical cyclone of a moderate intensity to impact the Solomon Islands. [12] However, many people were caught off guard by the cyclone's sudden increase in winds and the prolonged heavy rain, especially in remote areas where weather forecasts were difficult to disseminate because of communication problems. [1]

Weather

Namu impacted the Solomon Islands between May 17 - 20, with torrential and prolonged rainfall, high seas, gale to hurricane-force winds, wind gusts of over 150 km/h (93 mph), which caused flooding, landslides, mudslides, tidal and wind surges throughout the island nation. [1] [12] In particular it was estimated that storm or hurricane-force winds had impacted Malaita, Small Malaita, Guadalcanal, Bellona, as well as other smaller islands, that the Namu's center had passed within 50 to 65 km (30 to 40 mi) off. [1] [6] They also estimated that gale-force winds had impacted the area in between San Cristóbal, the Russell Islands, Santa Isabel and the northern tip of Malaita. [1] However, because of Namu's slow movement through the island nation, the majority of the deaths and damages, were caused by heavy rain, floods and mudslides, rather than as a direct effect of Namu's winds. [1] It was later estimated that parts of Guadalcanal had over 600 mm (24 in) of rainfall, while the weather station at Henderson Field recorded a rainfall total of 353 mm (13.9 in) between May 18 - 21. [6] [13]

Death toll

Namu is commonly thought to have caused 150 deaths when it impacted the Solomon Islands, however, this death toll is disputed with different totals listed in reliable sources. [nb 1] [12] [15] Within their final report, the Solomon Islands National Disaster Council reported that Namu had caused about 103 deaths, however, only 63 people were listed as dead or missing. [6] In particular they noted that 49 of these deaths occurred on Guadalcanal, 11 on Malaita, 2 in the Temotu province and 1 on Makaria. [6] During July 1991, Russell Blong and Deirdre Radford of Macquarie University published the results of an extensive survey into the natural disasters in the Solomon Islands, which "positively identified" 111 deaths in association with Cyclone Namu. [12] [15]

Sikaiana

During May 17, the newly named Tropical Cyclone Namu passed within 55 km (35 mi) of the isolated atoll: Sikaiana, which bore the brunt of the system as it approached the Solomon Islands. [6] [12] Storm surge associated with the cyclone inundated the island with salt water, which contaminated water wells and exacerbated difficulties with fresh water supplies. [3] [16] The storm surge also destroyed the majority of the traditional housing that had been made out of palm fronds and left the islanders without any food, water or shelter. [3] [16] Over the next few weeks, the islanders relied on coconut milk, until HMAS Brunei was able to deliver relief supplies and over 200 drums of fresh water on June 4. [12]

Malaita

After impacting Sikaiana, Namu moved south-westwards towards the southern part of Malaita, where it seemed to slow down and remain near-stationary for around five hours. [16] High winds associated with Namu, damaged roofs and defoliated the hills over central, southern and western Malaita, while waves damaged the coastline. [16]

Gudalcanal

Within the island nation meandering rivers changed their course and cut a straight path, which brought mud, silt and debris to rich farming areas. [1] The floods also exposed a site of an American and Japanese World War 2 ammunition dump on Guadalcanal from Henderson Field to Red Beach. [17] [18]

Makira

Rennell and Bellona

Namu passed just to the west of the Rennell and Bellona Province, with both islands in the province feeling the effects of the cyclone. [16] On Rennell Island, 20 houses were destroyed while both the school and the airstrip were damaged by storm surge, high winds and heavy rain. [3] The damage to Bellona was considered more serious with 160 traditional houses destroyed by storm surge, high winds and heavy rain. [3] [16]

Impact

Most of the damage caused by Cyclone Namu occurred due to river flooding. [13] [19] The cyclone affected 48% of the Solomon's land area and 62% of its total population. [20] Along the eastern coast of the island, damage was massive; entire villages were destroyed. Gardens were devastated and walking pathways were blocked. [21] [22] [23] In Babanakira, 5 people died. [24]

On the island of Guadalcanal, a single mudslide was responsible for killing 38 villagers. [25] Of the 43 people that lived in the small town of Valebaibai, only 5 survived, all of whom narrowly escaped. [26] Moreover, 14 dead bodies were found in the central and southern areas of Guadalcanal on May 21 when flood waters began to recede. [27]

Deep flood water covered 75% of the island's (Guadalcanal) coastal plain; [28] these waters cut off channels and destroyed coastal villages. Furthermore, the Lungga, Ngalimbiu, Mberande, and Nggurambusu rivers sustained the worst flood damage; [13] water depth in some of the aforementioned rivers reached 8 m (26 ft). [29] Many trees were brought down due to high winds. [13] Also, numerous plantations were destroyed across the island. However, little beach erosion occurred on the island. [13] Moreover, 22% of homes on the island were either damaged or destroyed. [3] One bridge was also destroyed on the island. [30] Offshore Honiara, the capital of the nation, two ships [one was 60 ft (20 m) long and the other was 120 ft (35 m) long] each sank during the storm. [31] Throughout the capital, several schools were destroyed. The two bridges that connected the city with the island of Guadalcanal were destroyed, thus leaving Honiara isolated. [32] Furthermore, about 5,000 homeless were left homeless across the city, [33] 2,000 of whom sought refuge in a local college due to the storm. Although no people were to have confirmed to have died in the city, five children were reported missing in one of the capital's suburbs, Ngalimera. [32]

In both Guadalacal and Malatia, extensive areas of irrigated rice crops were submerged under floodwaters and mud. [1] In some areas, nearly all homes were destroyed. Mudslides and logs destroyed roads, bridges, water pipes and drainage systems. Crops such as cocoa, copra, coffee, and rice were destroyed, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage. [26] Additionally, communication between the outer and island of the Solomon group was completely destroyed. [34]

In all, approximately 90,000 people, one third of the country's population, were reportedly homeless. [19] [35] The southern islands of the Solomon's chain were seriously affected by the passage of Namu, becoming the worst tropical cyclone to impact the area in five years. [19] Of the 25,000 "traditional" houses on the Solomon Island, 6,000 (26%) were destroyed. Most of the fatalities were due to landslides and flooding. Property damaged totaled $25 million (1986 USD) [26] and the storm also caused US $100 million in economic losses in the Solomon Islands. [36] On May 18, Honiara's Central Hospital authorities decided to evacuate several patients, as the hospital was located on a coastal strip that was vulnerable to river flooding and seawater inundation. [14]

Aftermath

During May 19, the Government of the Solomon Islands declared a state of national disaster and decided that the emergency period would run until May 31. [6] [21] As a result, the government started to ask bilateral donors including Australia, New Zealand and the United Nations for assistance. [21] However, before any foreign assistance could arrive in the Solomon Islands, residents started to try to help themselves by patching up water pipes with bamboo, string and rubber strips. [26] New Zealand subsequently donated an initial

Within a week following the storm, access to fresh water was resorted to the archipelago; doctors believed that had these services not been restored, widespread disease would have been reported. [38] The government declared June 2 a national day of mourning for the victims of the storm. [39]

The International Monetary Fund loaned $1.3 million USD to the nation. [40] Australian relief planes had dropped food to 4,000 victims in the highlands on the main island of Guadalcanal and New Zealand provided nearly 30,000 lb (13,610 kg) of rice, canned meat and tea to the devastated region. New Zealand engineers were brought in to assess damage to roads and bridges and start removal of 40 ft (10 m) high debris along the waterfronts of the island chain. [41] Also, $10,000 ECU was donated to the devastated island group. [42] Other countries, including the United Kingdom, Papua New Guinea, the United States, and Japan also sent supplies and goods to the Solomon Islands. [19] Overall, US$8.6 million was provided to the Solomons [43] and 71,000 lb (32,205 kg) worth of supplies were provided to victims of the cyclone. [44]

During May 26, Henderson Field was reopened for commercial flights

Moreover, a commercial aircraft provided supplies to the 200 inhabitants of Sikiana Island, which had run out of food a week after the storm. [45] In all, a total of 17 coastal trading vessels, four helicopters, and six aircraft were used to transport food, tents and medical supplies to the needy. [46] It was estimated that the homeless would require aid such as food for six months. [47]

Elsewhere, in Honiara, the local ministry asked each resident to pay $50 so that the roofs that were damaged by the system could be repaired. [48] The cleanup process took a long time; a year after the storm, bulldozers were reportedly still removing broken logs and not all roads had been repaired. [26] Following the storm, disease spread to isolated part of the Solomon Island group; many animals died and hundreds of children were hospitalized because of the outbreak of disease. [49]

Longer term aftermath

On June 4, the Government of the Solomon Islands lifted the emergency period, four weeks after the system had impacted the islands. [14] After the emergency period was lifted, outside assistance that had been brought in to assist with relief efforts were gradually withdrawn, including armed services from Australia and New Zealand. [14] However, external assistance from Australia and New Zealand amongst others, was still needed due to the Solomon Islands reliance on overseas aid in general. [14] As a result, a two-day meeting took place in Honiara during July, at which the Solomon Islands Government requested and was promised about

During December 1986, the then Solomon Islands Prime Minister Sir Peter Kenilorea resigned, after allegations surfaced that he had channelled aid from France for Cyclone Namu towards the rebuilding of his village. However, the allegation was never proven. [51]


During March 1987, volunteers from the Australian Rotarians, commenced an eighteen-month project to build 93 schools in the Solomon Islands. [52] [53]

Questions were raised during the systems aftermath over whether or not excessive deforestation worsened the impact of the flood. The government denied reports that deforestation had any link to the catastrophe. [54]

Typhoon Gay, also known as the Kavali Cyclone of 1989, was a small but powerful tropical cyclone which caused more than 800 fatalities in and around the Gulf of Thailand in November 1989. The worst typhoon to affect the Malay Peninsula in thirty-five years, Gay originated from a monsoon trough over the Gulf of Thailand in early November. Owing to favorable atmospheric conditions, the storm rapidly intensified, attaining winds over 120 km/h (75 mph) by 3 November. Later that day, Gay became the first typhoon since 1891 to make landfall in Thailand, striking Chumphon Province with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph). The small storm emerged into the Bay of Bengal and gradually reorganized over the following days as it approached southeastern India. On 8 November, Gay attained its peak intensity as a Category 5-equivalent cyclone with winds of 260 km/h (160 mph). The cyclone then moved ashore near Kavali, Andhra Pradesh. Rapid weakening ensued inland, and Gay dissipated over Maharashtra early on 10 November.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1992 North Indian Ocean cyclone season</span>

The 1992 North Indian Ocean cyclone season was unofficially the most active year on record for the basin, with 10 tropical storms developing, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). There are two main seas in the North Indian Ocean – the Bay of Bengal to the east of the Indian subcontinent – and the Arabian Sea to the west of India. The official Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre in this basin is the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while the JTWC releases unofficial advisories. An average of four to six storms form in the North Indian Ocean every season with peaks in May and November. Cyclones occurring between the meridians 45°E and 100°E are included in the season by the IMD.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Ike</span> Pacific typhoon in 1984

Typhoon Ike, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Nitang, was the second deadliest tropical cyclone in the 20th century in the Philippines. Ike originated from an area of disturbed weather southeast of Guam on August 21, 1984, and five days later, developed into a tropical depression. Following an increase in organization, the depression attained tropical storm intensity on August 27. Initially tracking west-southwest, the storm gradually gained strength as wind shear resulted relaxed and Ike became a typhoon on August 30. Continuing to rapidly intensity, Ike turned west and attained peak intensity on September 1, with the Japan Meteorological Agency estimating winds of 170 km/h (105 mph). At around 14:00 UTC that day, Ike made landfall on the northeastern tip of Mindanao. The cyclone emerged into the South China Sea on September 3 as a tropical storm before re-intensifying into a typhoon and moving onshore Hainan. Ike then struck the Chinese mainland as a tropical storm in Guangxi and dissipated on September 6.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclones Katrina and Victor–Cindy</span>

Severe Tropical Cyclones Katrina and Victor–Cindy were a long-lived pair of related tropical cyclones, which moved around the coast of northeastern Australia during parts of January and February 1998, before eventually moving into the southern Indian Ocean. Katrina was the fourth tropical cyclone and named storm of the 1997–98 Australian region cyclone season; Victor–Cindy was the seventh tropical cyclone and named storm of the 1997–98 Australian region cyclone season; after moving into the South-West Indian Ocean, Victor–Cindy became the fifth tropical cyclone and the fourth named storm of the 1997–98 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season. Katrina developed on 1 January and meandered within the Coral Sea between the Queensland coast and Vanuatu for the next three weeks, before degenerating into a remnant low near Far North Queensland on 25 January. After its decay, the remnants of Katrina moved westward over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf of Carpentaria, before regenerating into Cyclone Victor on February 8, after which the system moved through the Northern Territory and into the Indian Ocean, over the course of the next week. Upon reaching the Indian Ocean on 16 February, the system was named "Cindy" by Mauritius, before eventually dissipating on 19 February.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Rewa</span> Category 5 South Pacific and Australian region cyclone in 1993 and 1994

Severe Tropical Cyclone Rewa affected six countries and caused 22 deaths on its 28-day journey across the South Pacific Ocean in December 1993 and January 1994. Cyclone Rewa developed from a tropical disturbance on 28 December south of Nauru. After forming, Rewa moved southwest through the Solomon Islands, crossing the 160th meridian east from the South Pacific basin into the Australian region. The cyclone began to strengthen steadily and turned southward, paralleling the eastern Australian coast through 31 December. Rewa reached its initial peak intensity as a Category 4 tropical cyclone on 2 January. It maintained this intensity for about 12 hours before an increase in wind shear induced its weakening by 3 January. The cyclone turned southeastward and moved back into the South Pacific basin on 4 January, before it passed over New Caledonia between 5–6 January. After affecting New Caledonia, Rewa weakened to a tropical depression and turned northwestward before re-entering the Australian basin on 10 January.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Cecil</span> Pacific typhoon in 1985


Typhoon Cecil, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Rubing, was one of two typhoons to strike Vietnam within a week in 1985. Cecil originated from an area of convection that tracked west-northwest and passed south of Palau late on October 9. The disturbance became increasingly defined as it moved through the southern Philippines. On October 12, a tropical depression developed, and the next day, the depression was upgraded into a tropical storm. Cecil turned northwest over the open waters of the South China Sea as it steadily strengthened, and was classified as a typhoon on October 14. After unexpectedly slowing down, Cecil continued to intensify and at noon of October 14, reached its peak intensity of 145 km/h (90 mph). Land interaction with Vietnam triggered a weakening trend. After turning west, Cecil moved onshore just north of Huế at 22:00 UTC on October 15. After tracking into Laos, the typhoon dissipated 39 hours later.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Nina</span> Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone in 1992–93

Severe Tropical Cyclone Nina was a significant tropical cyclone which impacted six island nations from December 1992 to January 1993. The system was first noted as a tropical low over the Cape York Peninsula on 21 December. Over the next few days the system moved south-westwards and moved into the Gulf of Carpentaria where it was named Nina, after it had developed into a tropical cyclone during 23 December. The system was subsequently steered south-eastwards by an upper level trough of low pressure, before it made landfall as a Category 2 tropical cyclone on the Cape York Peninsula near Cape Keerweer on 25 December. Over land the system weakened into a tropical low before it regenerated into a tropical cyclone over the Coral Sea on 28 December. The system subsequently moved north-eastwards, under the influence of Severe Tropical Cyclone Kina and an upper level ridge of high pressure. During 1 January 1993, Nina peaked with sustained wind speeds of 140 km/h (85 mph), as it affected Rennell, Bellona and Temotu provinces in the Solomon Islands. The system subsequently gradually weakened as it accelerated eastwards and affected Rotuma, Wallis and Futuna, Tonga and Niue. Nina was subsequently absorbed by Kina, while both systems were located near the Southern Cook Islands during 5 January.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Osea</span> Category 3 South Pacific cyclone in 1997

Severe Tropical Cyclone Osea was the second of seven cyclones to affect French Polynesia during the 1997–98 South Pacific cyclone season. The fourth tropical cyclone and second severe tropical cyclone of the very active season, Osea began as a low that formed on November 22, and the storm initially remained weak. Moving south and later east, it was named Osea on November 24 after achieving windspeeds equal to a Category 1 cyclone on the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale. Continuing to intensify, Osea soon reached its peak intensity of 90 mph (145 km/h). Afterwards, Osea began to weaken because of increased wind shear, and the cyclone started moving southeast. By November 28, Osea was no longer a tropical cyclone.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1985–86 South Pacific cyclone season</span> Tropical cyclone season

The 1985–86 South Pacific cyclone season was an average tropical cyclone season, in terms of tropical cyclone formation, with ten tropical cyclones occurring within the basin between 160°E and 120°W. The season ran from February 5, 1985, to May 22, 1986, with tropical cyclones officially monitored by the Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS), Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and New Zealand's MetService. The United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and other national meteorological services including Météo-France and NOAA also monitored the basin during the season. During the season there was nine tropical cyclones occurring within the basin, including three that moved into the basin from the Australian region.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Drena</span>

Severe Tropical Cyclone Drena was a powerful tropical cyclone that caused significant damage throughout New Zealand. A tropical depression formed on January 2, 1997. After crossing Vanuatu and emerging into the Coral Sea, the storm began to intensify, and by January 6, had attained peak intensity. After attaining peak intensity, Drena began to weaken. Cyclone Drena later brushed New Caledonia, bringing some damage. After transitioning into an extratropical cyclone on January 9, Drena brought impact to New Zealand. Damage totaled to $6.7 million and 3 people were killed. Roughly 140 people were evacuated after 44 homes were flooded. After the season, Drena was retired.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Joy</span> Storm that hit Australia in late 1990

Severe Tropical Cyclone Joy struck Australia in late 1990, causing the third highest floods on record in Rockhampton, Queensland. This cyclone began as a weak tropical low near the Solomon Islands, and initially moved westward. On 18 December, it was named Joy, becoming the 2nd named storm of the 1990–91 Australian region cyclone season. After turning southwest, Joy developed a well-defined eye and strengthened to maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) while approaching Cairns in Far North Queensland. Brushing the city with strong winds, the cyclone soon weakened and turned southeast. Joy later curved back southwest, making landfall near Townsville, Queensland on 26 December. It dissipated the next day; remnant moisture continued as torrential rainfall over Queensland for two weeks.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Sose</span> Category 2 South Pacific cyclone in 2001

Tropical Cyclone Sose was a moderate storm system that chiefly impacted the island nation of Vanuatu in early April 2001. The developing cyclone was first detected on April 3, while situated well to the northeast of Vanuatu. As atmospheric conditions became more conducive to intensification, the disturbance gradually consolidated as it drifted toward the west-southwest. After receiving the name Sose on April 5, the cyclone was driven southeastward, passing just west of Espiritu Santo and neighboring islands. Although it never made landfall, Sose was particularly expansive, producing a wide area of gale-force winds. The cyclone peaked in strength between April 7 and 8 with maximum 10-minute sustained winds of 110 km/h (68 mph) and 1-minute sustained winds of 130 km/h (81 mph), placing it at Category 2 intensity on the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale. Ultimately, stronger wind shear and an increasingly hostile upper-air pattern took their toll on the cyclone as it progressed due south; Sose lost tropical characteristics to the northeast of Norfolk Island by April 12. The extratropical remnants of Sose continued into the Tasman Sea.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Tess</span> Pacific severe tropical storm in 1988

Severe Tropical Storm Tess known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Welpring was the second of three tropical cyclones to directly impact the Philippines in a two-week time frame in 1988. An area of disturbed weather near the Philippines was first observed on November 1. Following an increase in organization, the disturbance was designated as a tropical cyclone on November 4. Moving west, Tess steadily strengthened due to favorable conditions aloft. During the evening of November 5, Tess was estimated to have achieved its highest intensity, with winds of 115 km/h (70 mph). Rapid weakening then ensured as Tess neared Vietnam, and after making landfall in the country on November 6, Tess dissipated the next day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Raquel</span>

Tropical Cyclone Raquel was the first tropical cyclone to exist within the South Pacific Ocean during the month of July on record. The system was first noted during June 28, 2015, while it was located to the northeast of Honiara in the Solomon Islands within the South Pacific basin. Over the next few days the system moved south-westwards towards the Solomon Islands, under the influence of a ridge of high pressure and gradually developed further. The system was subsequently named Raquel during June 30, as it moved into the Australian region and developed into a Category 1 tropical cyclone on the Australian tropical cyclone intensity scale. Strong vertical wind shear subsequently limited further development of the system, with atmospheric convection surrounding the system displaced to the west and south of the system. The system subsequently weakened into a tropical depression during July 2, after it had recurved and move eastwards into the South Pacific basin. During that day atmospheric convection surrounding the system improved, as it started to move towards the south-southwest and the Australian region. Raquel subsequently passed near or over several of the Solomon Islands between July 3–5, before it was last noted to the south-west of Guadalcanal during July 5, as it rapidly lost its tropical characteristics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cyclone Fergus</span> Tropical cyclone

Severe Tropical Cyclone Fergus was a tropical cyclone, later becoming an extratropical cyclone, that affected islands in the south-west Pacific Ocean. It lasted from December 23, 1996, to January 1, 1997, and reached speeds of up to 165 kilometers per hour, or 90 miles per hour. In addition to its winds, the storm caused heavy rains and severe flooding, causing significant damage to property in some areas.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Agnes (1984)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1984

Typhoon Agnes, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Undang, was the fourth final tropical cyclone to affect the Philippines during the 1984 Pacific typhoon season. An area of disturbed weather developed near the equator and the Caroline Islands on October 28. Following an increase in organization, the cyclone was designated a tropical storm on October 31. After tracking northwest initially, Agnes turned west-northwest the next day, a course that the system would maintain for the rest of its lifetime. Agnes intensified into a typhoon on November 2, and on November 4, attained peak intensity. The storm then made landfall on Samar Island, part of the Philippines, at that intensity. The storm weakened over land, but re-intensified over the South China Sea; Agnes obtained a secondary peak intensity on November 6. The next day, Typhoon Agnes moved ashore Vietnam while still at typhoon intensity. The storm rapidly deteriorated over land and dissipated by November 8 over Thailand.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Warren</span> Pacific typhoon in 1988

Typhoon Warren, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Huaning, struck the Philippines and China during July 1988. An area of disturbed weather developed within the vicinity of the Caroline Islands during the second week of July. A tropical depression developed southeast of Guam on July 12, and on the next day, intensified into a tropical storm. Tracking generally west-northwest, Warren deepened into a typhoon on July 14. The storm subsequently entered a period of rapid intensification, commencing with Warren reaching its highest intensity on July 16. The following evening, the typhoon brushed Luzon, resulting in a weakening trend, although Warren was still a typhoon when it made landfall near Shantou. Warren rapidly dissipated inland.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1994 Bangladesh cyclone</span> Category 4 North Indian tropical cyclone in 1994

The 1994 Bangladesh cyclone was a powerful tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclone closely followed the path, strength, and time of year of a deadly cyclone in 1991 that killed more than 138,000 people. The 1994 cyclone formed on April 29 as a depression, which organized and intensified significantly over the subsequent few days. On May 2, the cyclone attained winds of 215 km/h (135 mph), according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). That day, the storm made landfall in southeastern Bangladesh, and rapidly weakened over land, before dissipating on May 3.
