Divisions of Kenya

The districts of Kenya were divided into 262 divisions (matarafa). Divisions of Kenya were further subdivided into locations. Today's counties of Kenya are based on the merging of some of the districts on this list and since the divisions are one level under the districts they are now the sub-counties. This is because Kenya recently changed its constitution and 47 Counties emerged. Here are the divisions listed below, by district (before the change in administration):

The divisions are subdivided into approximately 1,088 "locations" (mtaa) and then "sublocations" (kata ndogo). A province is administered by a Provincial Commissioner (PC).

Kenyan local authorities mostly do not follow common boundaries with divisions. They are classified as City, Municipality, Town or County councils.

A third discrete type of classification are constituencies. They are further subdivided into wards.

Wajir is the capital of Wajir County of Kenya. It is situated in the former North Eastern Province. The district is primarily inhabitted by the Degodia followed by the ogaden and Ajuran.

Thika District is a former administrative district in the Central Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Thika. The district was adjacent to the northeastern border of Nairobi. The district had a population of 645.713.

Kilifi County was formed in 2010 as a result of a merger of Kilifi District and Malindi District, Kenya. Its capital is Kilifi and its largest town is Malindi. Kilifi county is one of the five counties that make up the Kenyan Coast. The county has a population of 1,453,787 people following the 2019 census which covers an area of 12,245.90 km2 (4,728.17 sq mi).

The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is a state corporation that manages museums, sites and monuments in Kenya. Homa Bay County is a county in the former Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Homa Bay. The county has a population of 1,131,950 and an area of 3,154.7 km2. Lake Victoria is a major source of livelihood for Homa Bay County. It has 40 wards, each represented by an MCA to the assembly in Homa Bay town as its headquarters.

Sub-counties, also known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions, locations and sub-locations.

Wajir District was an administrative district in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. The district was created off the Northern Frontier District by the colonial government prior to independence. Its capital town was Wajir. The district had a population of 319,261 and an area of 55,501 km². Wajir district had only one local authority: Wajir county council. The district had four constituencies: Wajir North, Wajir West, Wajir East and Wajir South.

Kilifi District was an administrative district in the Coast Province of Kenya. Its capital is coastal town Kilifi. The district had a population of 281,552.

Mariakani–Kaloleni–Mavueni Road is a road in Kenya, connecting the towns of Mariakani to Kaloleni and Mavueni, all in Kilifi County, Kenya.
