The Fiat Multipla (Type 186) is a six-seater car produced by Italian automaker Fiat from 1998 to 2010. Based on the Bravo/Brava, the Multipla was shorter and wider than its rivals. It had two rows of three seats, where its compact MPV competitors had two across front seating. The Multipla is shorter than the three-door Bravo/Brava on which it was based, yet it offered increased seating and cargo volume. Sales commenced in Italy in November 1998.
In common with a number of other modern Fiats, the Multipla reused the name of an earlier vehicle, in this case the "Multipla" variant of the Fiat 600 produced during the 1950s and 1960s.
The Multipla was assembled and marketed in China from 2008 to 2013 under license by Zotye Auto as the Zotye M300 Langyue, using knock-down kits from Italy. Zotye also sold a total of 220 all-electric versions of the M300.
A first Multipla concept car was unveiled in at the Paris Motor Show in October 1996. The final production car was presented at the International Motor Show Germany in Frankfurt in the Autumn of 1997. [4]
The exterior and interior design of the Multipla were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York during its "Different Roads – Automobiles for the Next Century" exhibition in 1999. [5]
It won the Top Gear Car of the Year (2000), as well as the "More beautiful Car in the world" in the same programme's awards. [6] It was also voted Top Gear Magazine 'sFamily Car of the Year for four years in a row, from 2001 to 2004.[ citation needed ] In July 2000, in the series finale of Clarkson's Car Years , it was awarded "Family Car of the Moment". [7]
Multipla sales began in Italy in November 1998, with most other markets receiving it a year later. The Multipla sold well with Italian buyers, but sales elsewhere were less successful.
The Multipla underwent a major facelift in March 2004, in an attempt to shed its original styling for a more restrained look. This was with the intention of attracting more buyers, but failed to garner critical acclaim. [1] [8] Upon the subsequent restyling, The Daily Telegraph reported designers were "desperately sad that the new Multipla no longer resembles a psychotic cartoon duck," and "while passengers loved the adaptability of the clever interior, they were less keen on the sarcastic sneers and derisive laughter of their neighbours, friends and schoolmates; children can be cruel." [9]
The Telegraph placed it #2 on its list of the 100 Ugliest Cars in August 2008, saying, "Derided for the blandness of its output during the 1980s and early 1990s, Fiat dared to start thinking outside the box. In this case, however, it simply added wheels to the box." [10] The Multipla was also named the ugliest car of all time by readers of Car Throttle in January 2014. [11] In February 2018, The Sunday Times named it on a list of ugliest cars, saying, "The tragedy of the Multipla is that its Elephant Man-esque exterior enclosed a genuinely clever and spacious interior, and it wasn't bad to drive, either. It's a shame, then, that you'd rather walk than be seen in it." [12]
A 1.6 L engine, which could be powered on either methane or standard petrol, was offered in certain markets. [13]

In June 2004, when the Multipla received its facelift, these trim levels were later replaced with Dynamic, Dynamic Family, Dynamic Plus.
The new generation Multipla was praised by journalists at its launch for its flexibility. The Multipla's three abreast seating configuration allows for adjustment of the front seats, and the removal and relocation of the rear seats into many formats. It also affords a big 430 litres (15 cu ft) of luggage space, which can increase to 1,900 litres (67 cu ft) of flat floor load space, with the rear three seats removed from the vehicle.
From December 2008 to September 2010, Zotye Auto had assembled Multipla 2 from KD kits, in its factory in Changshan, and marketed it in China as the Zotye Multiplan. In October 2010, Zotye started to build a version of Multipla 2, employing more locally made parts in order to reduce costs; the new version is called "Langyue" in China. [14] There are 2 types: M300 (Engine powered) and M300 EV (see below) which is electric.
Minivan is a car classification for vehicles designed to transport passengers in the rear seating row(s), with reconfigurable seats in two or three rows. The equivalent classification in Europe is MPV or M-segment - and are taller than a sedan car, hatchback, SUV or station wagon.
The Fiat Siena is a subcompact car produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1996 to 2022. It is the four-door sedan version of the Fiat Palio, a supermini car especially designed for developing countries. It was introduced for the first time in South America, and was produced in various countries worldwide. Later, in 2002, a similar car based on the same platform was developed for the European market, the Fiat Albea. It replaced the Siena in these European markets, such as Poland and Turkey, where the original model was previously sold.
The Fiat Bravo and Fiat Brava are small family cars produced by the Italian automaker Fiat from 1995 to 2003. They were effectively two versions of the same car: the Bravo, a three-door hatchback, and the Brava, a five-door fastback. The Bravo name was revived in January 2007, with the all-new Fiat Bravo, a replacement for the Stilo. The new version was available only with five doors.
The Fiat Seicento is a city car produced by the Italian company Fiat, introduced at the end of 1997 as a replacement for the Fiat Cinquecento, although it was also based on the Cinquecento. The Seicento did not differ much from its predecessor, retaining the same engines, chassis and general dimensions, although it did gain a minor 90 mm in length.
The Fiat 600 is a small, rear-engined city car and economy family car made by Italian carmaker Fiat from 1955 to 1969 — offered in two-door fastback sedan and four-door Multipla mini MPV body styles. The 600 is considered a pop icon of the Italian economic miracle, and the three-row seating Multipla, though diminutive and odd-looking, is seen as one the first mass-produced minivans.
The Fiat Doblò is a panel van and leisure activity vehicle produced by Italian automaker Fiat since 2000. It was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2000. A second-generation Doblò succeeded the original vehicle in 2010 for most markets, and it was sold in the United States as the RAM ProMaster City from 2015 to 2022. The second generation was also sold in Europe and the UK as the Opel/Vauxhall Combo. The third-generation Doblò, a rebadged version of the Citroën Berlingo, was unveiled in June 2022, and is also sold as the Opel or Vauxhall Combo, Peugeot Partner, and Toyota ProAce.
The Fiat Idea is a car manufactured and marketed by Fiat from 2003 to 2012 over a single generation with one intermediate facelift. It is a five-passenger mini MPV with five doors. It has a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout.
The Kia Carnival is a minivan manufactured by Kia since 1998. It is marketed globally under various nameplates, prominently as the Kia Sedona.
The Fiat Argenta is a large family car produced by the Italian automobile company Fiat from 1981 to 1985. It was a comprehensive update of the Fiat 132 and the last mass-produced Fiat with rear-wheel drive until the 2016 124 Spider. The change to a name came about as Fiat was changing their naming strategy, changing from three-digit numbers to more meaningful names. This model was available in sedan/saloon bodystyle only.
Battery swapping or battery switching is an electric vehicle technology that allows battery electric vehicles to quickly exchange a discharged battery pack for a fully charged one, rather than to recharge the vehicle via a charging station. Battery swapping is common in electric forklift applications.
The Peugeot 5008 is a series of automobiles produced by the French manufacturer Peugeot since 2009. Originally a mid-size MPV in classification, for model year 2017 it was reclassified as a mid-size crossover SUV. Five- and seven-seat versions have been available. Its engine range is the same as that used in the Peugeot 3008.
Zotye Auto is a privately owned Chinese automobile manufacturer based in Yongkang, Zhejiang, China. It is owned by Zotye Holding Group and was established in 2005.
Baojun is a Chinese automobile marque owned by a joint venture of General Motors (GM) and SAIC Motor, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile. The brand was created as a more affordable alternative to existing GM brands such as Chevrolet and Buick for the Chinese market, while being more upmarket than the Wuling brand.
Roberto Giolito is an Italian automobile designer. Acting as Chief Designer at Fiat, Giolito is widely known for the Fiat Multipla, and the 2004 Fiat Trepiùno concept — precursor to the Fiat 500 of 2007, voted Car of the Year in 2008 and World Car Design of the Year 2009.
Hunan Jiangnan Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd., commonly known as Jiangnan Automobile is a Chinese automobile manufacturing company established in 2001 and majority owned by Zotye from 2007 onwards, headquartered in Xiangtan. It went bankrupt, entered reorganisation in 2021 and was relaunched in 2022.
The BYD Song Max is a compact multi purpose vehicle (MPV) developed by BYD since 2017. Initially available solely as an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, BYD introduced the plug-in hybrid and battery electric versions since 2019. In 2022, BYD discontinued the petrol-powered Song Max and replaced it with the plug-in hybrid Song Max DM-i after it ended production of ICE vehicles.
The Zotye Z100 is a City car hatchback produced by Zotye Auto. The model is available as a gasoline powered vehicle and as an electric vehicle. The Z100 was discontinued in 2017, while the electric version was relaunched in 2017 as the Zotye Cloud 100.
The Geely Jiaji is a compact MPV built by Chinese manufacturer Geely Auto as the company's first MPV. The concept named "VF11" was shown at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show. The Jiaji provides L2-level automatic driving, intelligence pilot and RCW system. The Geely Jiaji officially went on sale on March 11, 2019.
The Zhidou D2 is an all-electric car that is manufactured by the Chinese manufacturer Zhi Dou Electric Vehicle Corporation—sometimes called Zhidou Auto or ZD Auto. They were also used by car sharing company Sharengo in Milan and other Italian cities since 2013.
The Voyah Dream is an all-electric and plug-in hybrid minivan produced by Dongfeng under the Voyah brand, which launched on the Chinese car market in March 2022.
