Lego Cars 2 was a Lego theme based on the 2011 film Cars 2 . It was licensed from The Walt Disney Company and Pixar. [4] [5] The theme was first introduced in 2011. Before the launch of the Lego Cars 2 theme, Duplo Cars sub-theme based on the Cars was released as part of the Duplo theme in 2010. [4] In 2017, Lego Juniors Cars 3 sub-theme based on the Cars 3 was released as part of the Lego Juniors and Duplo theme. [6]

Overview

Lego Cars 2 was based on the film. The product line focused on the race car Lightning McQueen and tow truck Mater head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix, but Mater accidentally becomes sidetracked with international espionage. Lego Cars 2 aimed to recreate the main characters in Lego form, including Lightning McQueen and Mater. [7] In addition, Lego Cars 2 trailer was released shortly before the film, recreating it in Lego form. [8] [9] [10] [11]

The sequel film, Cars 3 , was released in May 2017. Lego produced various toy sets based on the film ahead of its release. [6] In addition, Lego Juniors Cars 3 trailer was released shortly before the film, recreating it in Lego form. [12]

Launch

Duplo Cars sub-theme was launched at the American International Toy Fair in 2010. [13] The Lego Group released four Duplo sets. Lego Cars 2 theme was launched at the American International Toy Fair in 2011. [14] As part of the marketing campaign, The Lego Group released fourteen Lego sets based on the film. Each set featured different World Grand Prix, vehicles and Radiator Springs. Lego Juniors Cars 3 sub-theme was launched at the American International Toy Fair in 2017. The Lego Group released eight Lego Juniors sets and three Duplo sets based on the film. [6] [15]

According to Bricklink, The Lego Group released a total of 19 sets of Duplo Cars, 27 sets and promotional polybags associated with Lego Cars 2 and 8 sets of Lego Juniors Cars 3. [1] [2] [3]

Duplo Cars sets

In 2010, The Lego Group announced a partnership with The Walt Disney Company and Pixar. [4] It was officially announced by The Lego Group that the four sets based on the Cars film was released on 4 June 2010 have been released as part of the Duplo theme. [20] The four sets being released were Lightning McQueen, [21] Mater's Yard, [21] Flo's V-8 Cafe [21] and Mack's Road Trip!. In 2011, the six sets based on the Cars 2 film was released on 12 May 2011. The six sets being released were Agent Mater, Luigi's Italian Place, Tokyo Racing, [22] Big Bentley, The Pit Shop and World Grand Prix. [22] In 2012, the three sets was released on 24 July 2012. [23] [24] [25] The three sets being released were Red, [23] Race Day [23] and Siddeley Saves the Day. [23] In 2015, Classic Race set was released on 1 January 2015. In 2017, three sets [26] [27] based on the Cars 3 film. The 3 sets being released were Flo's Café, [26] Mater's Shed [26] and Piston Cup Race. [26] In 2020, Lightning McQueen's Race Day set was released on 24 August 2020. Buildable characters including Doc Hudson, Guido, Fillmore, Flo, Luigi, Lightning McQueen, Mater, Red, Sally Carrera and Sheriff were released as well. These sets are twice the length, height, and width of traditional Lego bricks, making them easier to handle and less likely to be swallowed by younger children. Despite their size, they are still compatible with traditional Lego bricks. The sets were designed primarily for children aged 2 to 5 years old.

Lego Cars 2 sets

In 2011, it was officially announced that the fourteen sets [28] [29] based on the Cars 2 film was released on 12 May 2011. The fourteen sets [30] being released were Radiator Springs Lightning McQueen, Radiator Springs Classic Mater, Tokyo Pit Stop, [31] World Grand Prix Racing Rivalry, [31] Mater's Spy Zone, Escape At Sea, Ultimate Build Lightning McQueen, Mack's Team Truck, [31] [32] Flo's V8 Café, [31] Spy Jet Escape, [31] Big Bentley Bust Out, Ultimate Build Mater, [31] Ultimate Build Francesco and Tokyo International Circuit. [31] Later, the eight sets was released on 16 December 2011. The eight sets being released were Francesco Bernoulli, Ivan Mater, Finn McMissile, Jeff Gorvette, Agent Mater's Escape, Red's Water Rescue, Ultimate Race Set and Oil Rig Escape. In addition, the three polypag sets have been released as a promotions are Guido, [33] [34] Grem [35] [36] and "Torque" Redline Promotional Set. Lego Juniors Cars 3 sets

In 2017, the seven sets [37] [38] [39] based on the Cars 3 film was released on 2 May 2017 have also been released as part of the Lego Juniors theme. The seven sets [40] [41] [42] [43] being released were Lightning McQueen Speed Launcher, [44] Cruz Ramirez Race Simulator, [44] Guido and Luigi's Pit Stop, [44] Mater's Junkyard, [44] Willy's Butte Speed Training, [44] Smokey's Garage [44] and Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race. [44] Later, Florida 500 Final Race [45] [46] set was released on 1 August 2017. Buildable characters including Broadside, Cruz Ramirez, Junior Moon, Jackson Storm, Miss Fritter and Smokey were released as well. These sets were specifically designed to be simpler to build with fewer pieces and slightly larger building elements. The sets were designed primarily for children aged 4–7.

Web shorts

The product line was accompanied by a series of animated short films that was released on YouTube.

Lego Cars 2 (2011 shorts)

The 13 web shorts have been released on YouTube. It also available in Lego Cars 2 video disc as a free gift for qualify purchase of Cars 2 Blu-ray combo pack at Toys "R" Us. [47]

In 2011, The Lego Group reported that due to the Lego Toy Story, Lego Prince of Persia, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean and Lego Cars 2 lines, it had for the first time in its 50-year history in the American market surpassed $1.0 billion in consumer sales of Lego products, reaching its highest share of construction toys and total U.S. toy market ever. In November 2010, it was officially announced by Lego that the video game Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game was in production. It was released on May 10, 2011 in North America. The series acts as a thematic replacement for the popular Lego Pirates theme, featuring many of the same elements. Most of the sets are similar to the Lego Pirates theme. The theme was first introduced in 2011 and discontinued in 2017.

Lego Pharaoh's Quest was a Lego theme that was first introduced in 2011. It uses elements from the previous Lego Adventurers theme. The Lego Pharaoh's Quest theme was discontinued by the end of 2012.

<i>Cars</i> (franchise) Animated film series and Disney media franchise

Cars is a CGI-animated film series and Disney media franchise set in a world populated by anthropomorphic vehicles created by John Lasseter. The franchise began with the 2006 film of the same name, produced by Pixar and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film was followed by a sequel in 2011. A third film was released in 2017. The now defunct Disneytoon Studios produced the two spin-off films Planes (2013) and Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014).

Lego Super Heroes is a theme and product range of the Lego construction toy, introduced in 2011. The line features DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Pixar's The Incredibles franchises. Cars 3 is a 2017 American computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Brian Fee in his directorial debut and written by Kiel Murray, Bob Peterson, and Mike Rich, it is the third installment of the Cars film series and the stand-alone sequel to Cars 2 (2011). It was executive-produced by John Lasseter, who directed the first two Cars films. The returning voices of Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt and Larry the Cable Guy are joined by Cristela Alonzo, Chris Cooper, Armie Hammer, Nathan Fillion, Kerry Washington, and Lea DeLaria, in addition to a dozen NASCAR personalities. Lego Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a theme from Lego based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles entertainment franchise first created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. It ran from 2012 to 2014 and included sets based on both the 2012 animated series from Nickelodeon and the 2014 film by Michael Bay.

Lego Disney is a Lego theme based on the various Disney Princesses and Disney characters involved in different Disney films. It is licensed from Walt Disney Pictures. The theme was first introduced in 2016 and was re-branded theme from the Lego Disney Princess line in 2017.

<i>The Lego Movie</i> (franchise) Media franchise based on Lego toys

The Lego Movie is an American media franchise based on Lego construction toys. It began with the 2014 film The Lego Movie, which was directed and written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The success of the film led to the release of two licensed video games, a 4D film theme park attraction, two spin-off films titled The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, which were released in 2017, Unikitty! an animated television series that also came out in the same year, and the sequel to the original movie titled The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part in 2019. Plans for a third spin-off film and a sequel to The Lego Batman Movie were later shelved. The franchise has received a generally positive critical reception, with the exception of The Lego Ninjago Movie which received mixed reviews, and has grossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Lego Juniors Product range of the Lego construction toy

Lego Juniors is a product range of the construction toy Lego, designed for children aged 4 to 7 years old. It acts as a transition from the Duplo to the regular Lego System. Lego Juniors initial release was on February 14, 2014, with the tagline Easy to build. It is the successor of the Bricks & More line released in 2009. Unlike its predecessor, Lego Juniors offers specialized bricks to make builds look more realistic yet using fewer pieces for an easier build. Later, it was discontinued in 2018 and replaced with "4+".

The toy line was accompanied by several shorts, a television special and films based on Lego Scooby-Doo. The Lego Scooby-Doo theme was discontinued by the end of 2017.

Lego Unikitty! Lego theme

Lego Unikitty! is a Lego theme based on the same name of the animated television series. It is licensed from The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation for Cartoon Network and the series stars the character of the same name from The Lego Movie and its sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The theme was first introduced in 2018. Lego The Lord of the Rings is a Lego theme based on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. It is licensed from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. The theme was first introduced in 2012. The first sets appeared in 2012, to coincide with a release of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and the video game Lego The Lord of the Rings. Lego Monster Fighters Lego theme

Lego Monster Fighters was a Lego theme based on Universal Studios Monsters from the horror fiction genre. The Monster Fighters fight against the Lord Vampyre's monsters while collecting the moonstones. The story takes place in the Monster Realm and it's similar to The Monster Squad film. The theme was first introduced in 2012. It was eventually discontinued by the end of 2012. The theme also produced a range of associated media, including theme park attractions, video game, app and publications.
