This is a list of active Italian Navy ships. The navy maintains approximately 181 ships in service, [1] including minor auxiliary vessels. The fleet has started a process of renewal that will see 50 ships retired by 2025 and replaced by 30 multi-mission ships. [2] Ocean going fleet units include: 2 aircraft carriers, 3 small 8,000-tonne amphibious transport docks, 4 air-defence destroyers, 4 general-purpose frigates, 7 anti-submarine frigates, and 8 attack submarines. Patrol and littoral warfare units include 2 light patrol frigate, 10 offshore patrol vessels and two corvettes. In support of the fleet there are 10 mine countermeasure vessels, 6 coastal patrol boats/special forces patrol boats and various auxiliary ships. The total displacement of the Italian Navy is approximately 275,000 tonnes.

Cavour is an Italian aircraft carrier launched in 2004. She is the flagship of the Italian Navy.
The Italian Navy is one of the four branches of Italian Armed Forces and was formed in 1946 from what remained of the Regia Marina after World War II. As of August 2014, the Italian Navy had a strength of 30,923 active personnel, with approximately 184 vessels in service, including minor auxiliary vessels. It is considered a multiregional and a blue-water navy.
The Nazario Sauro class are diesel-electric submarines operated by the Italian Navy. All boats were built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone.
The San Giorgio class are amphibious transport docks (LPD) built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. These ships can carry a battalion of troops, and up to 36 armored vehicles. The stern floodable dock can accommodate three landing craft. The ships are based at the Brindisi naval base on the Adriatic coast.
The 17th Raiders Wing is the Italian Air Force special forces unit. It is the youngest special force created in Italy. It is based in Furbara, near Rome and part of the Comando interforze per le Operazioni delle Forze Speciali. Until 8 April 2008 the unit was named Reparto Incursori Aeronautica Militare but with the expansion and evolution of the unit's assignments and its size, the name was changed to "17° Stormo Incursori".
The Francesco Morosini Naval Military School is a military education college based in Venice operated by the Italian Navy and named after the great venetian Doge.
The "San Marco" Marine Brigade is an amphibious formation of the Italian Navy, has been brigade since 2013 but the amphibious corps existed since 1915, reorganizing the Navy Landing Force. It has its command in Brindisi. They are the marines of the Italian Navy.

The Italian Naval Aviation is the naval air component of the Italian Navy composed of around 2000 men and women and 69 aircraft and helicopters.
The Thaon di Revel class is a class of multipurpose offshore ships built by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy.
It is planned to replace four Soldati-class light patrol frigates and eight Minerva-class corvettes between 2021/2035. As part of the 2014 Naval Law, a total of sixteen ships are planned and as of 2019 seven vessels have been financed with three more on option.
The Vulcano class is a class of replenishment oiler used by the Italian Navy, with lead ship Vulcano of the class entered service on 12 March 2021. The ships are designed to support fleet operations with fuel and dry stores and expected to replace the Stromboli class, another class of replenishment oiler from the Navy. Vulcano was financed under the 2014 Naval Law, for €346 million, then increased to €374.6 million, when the length was extended by 12 metres (39 ft). A second ship Atlante was ordered in January 2022 for projected delivery in 2025. The Navy also had an option for a third ship of the class. However, under the Italian MoD’s Multi-Year Defence Planning Document for the 2023-2025 timeframe, a fourth ship was added to the program.
The Rossetti class of coastal research vessels consists of two units operated by the Italian Navy and named as "Nave Esperienze". The vessels are used by Centro Supporto Sperimentazioni Navali for technologies research and development trials on anti-submarine weapons.
MSM-1 USEL was a deep-submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV) that was rated to dive up to 600 m (1,969 ft). It was built by Cantieri Navali Ernesto Breda/Fincantieri for the Marina Militare. The sub was capable of descending to 600 metres (2,000 ft) below the surface and could carry 8 passengers at a time in addition to her crew. MSM-1 USEL was hosted by mother ship Anteo at La Spezia from 1980 to 2002. That year MSM-1 USEL was replaced by the DRASS Galeazzi SRV-300.

Odoardo Somigli was an Italian admiral during the interwar period and World War II. He was Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Italian Navy from August 1939 to December 1940.
