Amitabh Bachchan (IPA: [əmɪˈtaːbʱˈbəttʃən] ; born 11 October 1942) is an Indian actor. He first gained popularity in the early 1970s for movies like Zanjeer and Deewaar , and was dubbed India's first "angry young man" for his on-screen roles in Bollywood. Referred to as the "Shahenshah of Bollywood", "Star of the Millennium" or "Big B", [1] [2] [3] [4] he has since appeared in over 180 Indian films in a career spanning more than four decades. [5] [6] Bachchan is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] So total was his dominance of the movie scene in the 1970s and 1980s that the French director François Truffaut called him a "one-man industry." [12] [13]

Bachchan has won numerous accolades in his career, including four National Film Awards as Best Actor, National Film Award For Best Feature Film in Hindi Language for Paa (Producer),Dadasaheb Phalke Award as lifetime achievement award and many awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies. He has won sixteen Filmfare Awards and is the most-nominated performer in any major acting category at Filmfare, with 42 nominations overall and also won eleven Screen Awards.

Apart from National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and other competitive awards which Bachchan won for his performances throughout the years, he has been awarded several honours for his achievements in the Indian film industry.In 1990 he got Filmfare award for Agneepath.In 1991, he became the first artist to receive the, which was established in the name of Raj Kapoor. Bachchan was crowned as Superstar of the Millennium in 2000 at the Filmfare Awards. The Government of India awarded him with the Padma Shri in 1984, [14] the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. France's highest civilian honour, the Knight of the Legion of Honour, was conferred upon him by the French Government in 2007 for his "exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond". [15] In 2011, actor Dilip Kumar blogged that Black should have been nominated for an Oscar. Kumar added: "If any Indian actor, in my personal opinion, deserves the world's most coveted award, it is you." [16]

In 1999, Bachchan was voted the "Greatest Star of stage or screen of the Millennium" in a BBC Your Millennium online poll. [17] In 2001, he was honoured with the Actor of the Century award at the Alexandria International Film Festival in Egypt in recognition of his contribution to the world of cinema. [18] Many other honours for his achievements were conferred upon him at several International Film at the 2010 Asian Film Awards. [19]

In 2003, he was conferred with the Honorary Citizenship of the French town of Deauville. [20] In October 2003, he was conferred with the Medal of Honour of Morocco, given to him by King Mohammed at the Marrakech International Film Festival. [21] [22] In October 2003, TIME magazine dubbed Bachchan as "the Undisputed Godfather of Bollywood". [23] In April 2005, The Walter Reade Theater of Lincoln Center in New York honored Amitabh Bachchan with a special tribute, retrospective—titled "Amitabh Bachchan: The Biggest Film Star in the World". [24] [25] In March 2010, he has been named the list of CNN's "top 25 Asian actors of all time". [26]

In June 2000, he became the first living Asian to have been modelled in wax at London's Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. [27] Another statue was installed in New York in 2009, [28] Hong Kong in 2011, [29] Bangkok in 2011, [30] Washington, DC in 2012 [31] and Delhi in 2017. [32]

He was honoured with an honorary doctorate by the University of Jhansi, India, in 2004, [33] the University of Delhi in 2006, [34] the De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, in 2006, [35] the Leeds Metropolitan University in Yorkshire, UK, in 2007, [36] the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, in 2011, [37] the Jodhpur National University in 2013. [38] [39] and the Academy of Arts (Egypt), Egypt, in 2015. [40] [41] In 2017, he was honored with the Indian Film Personality of the Year consisting of a Silver Peacock Medal, a certificate a Civilian award.

On 24 September 2019 he was awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalake award for 2018 by government of India.[ citation needed ]

The National Film Awards is the most prominent film award ceremonies in India. Established in 1954, it is administered by the International Film Festival of India and the Indian government's Directorate of Film Festivals. The awards are presented by the President of India. Due to their national scale, they are considered to be the equivalent of the Academy Awards. [66] Bachchan has received four awards (a record) in the Best Actor category and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

The Screen Awards was an annual awards ceremony held in India, honouring professional excellence in Bollywood. The nomination and award selection was done by a panel of distinguished professionals from the industry. The awards were introduced by Screen magazine of the Indian Express Group in 1995. The magazine was acquired by Star India in 2015 and subsequently closed down. Star India continues to sponsor the event under the Star Screen Awards title.

He made his acting debut in 1969 with Saat Hindustani, and narrated Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome (1969). He later appeared as Dr. Bhaskar Banerjee in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anand (1971), for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1973, Bachchan played the role of Inspector Vijay Khanna in Prakash Mehra's action film Zanjeer. He has since appeared in several films with the character name "Vijay". During the same year, he appeared in Abhimaan and Namak Haraam. For the latter, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
