Malaysian Federal Roads System, is the main national road network in Malaysia. All Federal Roads in Malaysia are under the purview of the Ministry of Works (MOW). According to the Ministerial Functions Act 1969, the MOW is responsible to plan, build and maintain all Federal Roads gazetted under the Federal Roads Act 1959. However, most of the Federal roads' projects were built and maintained by the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR), which is also one of the implementing agencies under the MOW.

Malaysian State Roads System are the secondary roads in Malaysia with a total length of 247,027.61 km. The construction and maintenance works of state roads in Malaysia is managed by Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) of each state and funded by state governments. The standard of the state roads is similar with the federal roads except for the coding system, where the codes for state roads begin with state codes followed by route number, for example Johor State Route J32 is labeled as J32. If a state road crosses the state border, the state code will change, for example route B20 in Salak Tinggi, Selangor will change to N20 after crossing the border of Negeri Sembilan to Nilai.

Pasir Gudang Highway, also known as Federal Route 17, is a highway in Johor Bahru District, Johor, Malaysia that connects Tampoi North in the west to Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Langsat in the east. Pasir Gudang Highway is a four-laned highway, unlike the wider Skudai Highway which has six lanes. Many cargo trucks travel along the highway daily. Pasir Gudang Highway became the backbone of the road system linking Johor Bahru to Pasir Gudang before being surpassed by the Senai–Desaru Expressway, SDE 22, and the Johor Bahru East Coast Parkway 35.

Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2, Federal Route 28, is a ring road built by the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) to connect neighborhoods near the boundary of Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Altogether, the 65.0 km (40.4 mi) of the entire system consists of Federal Route 28, Damansara–Puchong Expressway Damansara–Puchong Expressway and Shah Alam Expressway Shah Alam Expressway. However, the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 is generally referred to as Route 28 since Route 28 occupies about two-thirds of the system.

The Pulau Indah Expressway, Federal Route 181, is a countryside highway in Selangor, Malaysia. It connects Pandamaran from Shah Alam Expressway to West Port in Pulau Indah. This 17.7 km (11.0 mi) highway was opened to traffic in 1995, after four years of construction. Pulau Indah Expressway is a four-laned expressway, unlike the wider Shah Alam Expressway which has six lanes. Many cargo trucks travel along the highway daily. The Federal Route 2 is a major east–west oriented federal highway in Malaysia. The 276.9 kilometres (172 mi) road connects Port Klang in Selangor to Kuantan Port in Pahang. The Federal Route 2 became the backbone of the road system linking the east and west coasts of Peninsula Malaysia before being surpassed by the East Coast Expressway E8.

Lebuh Ayer Keroh, Federal Route 143, also known as Lebuhraya Ayer Keroh or Ayer Keroh Avenue, is the main dual-carriageway highway that connects Malacca City of Malacca, Malaysia to the North–South Expressway via Ayer Keroh Interchange. Ayer Keroh, the main satellite town of Malacca City is located along the road. Lebuh Ayer Keroh used to be State Motorway M31 before being recommissioned by Malaysian Public Works Department (Jabatan Kerja Raya ). Before 1993, most of the road was a two-lane road before it was upgraded to a dual-carriageway in 1993 and in 1997.

Federal Route 92, also known as Pengerang Highway, is a federal highway that runs from Kota Tinggi to Sungai Rengit in Johor, Malaysia. The 66.8 km (41.5 mi) highway is also a main route to Desaru beach. Federal Route 92 became the backbone of the road system linking the southeastern Johor before being surpassed by the Senai–Desaru Expressway E22.

Road signs in Malaysia are standardised road signs similar to those used in Europe but with certain distinctions. Until the early 1980s, Malaysia closely practice in road sign design, with diamond-shaped warning signs and circular restrictive signs to regulate traffic. Signs usually use the Transport Heavy font on non-tolled roads and highways. Tolled expressways signs use a font specially designed for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) which is LLM Lettering. It has two type of typefaces, LLM Narrow and LLM Normal. Older road signs used the FHWA Series fonts typeface also used in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Changlun–Kuala Perlis Highway or Federal Route 194, is a controlled-access highway in Malaysia which links the state of Perlis with the main expressway of Peninsular Malaysia, the North–South Expressway. Most of the route of this highway used to be Kedah State Route K6 and Perlis State Route R6, while the Federal Route 81 is a short road from Route 7 to Kuala Perlis. Those roads were upgraded to a four-lane highway to provide better accessibility from the North–South Expressway.

Second East–West Highway, also known as Simpang Pulai–Kuala Berang Highway, Federal Route 185 and Federal Route 36, is a highway in Peninsular Malaysia which connects Simpang Pulai in Perak to Kuala Jeneris in Terengganu. It overlaps with Federal Route 8 Federal Route 8 between Gua Musang and Sungai Relau. It is notorious for its many sharp corners which increase the risk of road accidents.

The West Coast Expressway (E32), abbreviated WCE, is an interstate controlled-access highway running along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The 233-kilometre (145-mile) expressway is currently under construction, with several sections open for public use. Once completed, the expressway will run between Changkat Jering, Perak and Banting, Selangor, following federal routes 5 and 60 for most of its route. The expressway will operate in three sections, with sections of federal route 5 completing the missing connections; these sections will be upgraded to limited-access roads. The expressway is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, except for a 10 km stretch from Section 7B which is expected to be completed by June 2026.

Jalan Seri Kembangan, or Jalan Putra Permai and Jalan Besar, Federal Route 3215, is a major highway in Selangor, Malaysia. This 9.4 km toll-free highway connects Serdang interchange of the Damansara–Puchong Expressway in the southwest to Seri Kembangan interchange of the Besraya Expressway in the northeast. Jalan Seri Kembangan connects with three major tolled expressways: Damansara–Puchong Expressway, Maju Expressway and Besraya Expressway.

Jalan Sungai Lembing, Federal Route 231, is a major highway in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia. It is also a main route to East Coast Expressway via Kuantan Interchange. The Kilometre Zero of the Federal Route 231 starts at Kuantan.

Malaysian toll road-expressways are built by private companies under the supervision of the government highway authority, Malaysian Highway Authority. While toll-free expressways are built by Malaysian Public Works Department or Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia (JKR) in Malay.
