Lok Bhalai Party (LBP) is a defunct Indian regional political party active mainly in Punjab. It was founded by former Union Minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia in 1999. [1] It merged into Akali Dal (Badal) on November 2011. [2] Later it was relaunched in July 2018.

The party mainly focused in the issues related to Punjabis migrating to other countries. In that respect, in that respect it took up causes of people duped by travel agents, issues related to wedding of Punjabi girls with Non-resident Indian

Punjabi Suba movement 1947–1966 political agitation in northern India

The Punjabi Suba movement was a long-drawn political agitation, launched by the Sikhs, demanding the creation of a Punjabi Suba, or Punjabi-speaking state, in the post-independence Indian state of East Punjab. Led by the Akali Dal, it resulted in the formation of the state of Punjab. The state of Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh were also created and some Pahari-majority parts of the East Punjab were also merged with Himachal Pradesh following the movement.

Amarinder Singh 15th Chief Minister of Punjab, India

Amarinder Singh, known publicly as Captain Amarinder Singh, is an Indian politician, military historian, author, former royal and former veteran who served as the 15th Chief Minister of Punjab. An elected Member of the Legislative Assembly from Patiala, he was also the president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, the state division of the Indian National Congress. He has also previously served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. His father was the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala. He has also served in the Indian Army from 1963 to 1966. In 1980, he won a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time. As of February 2021, Singh also serves as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy. Captain Singh resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on 18 September 2021.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic), was splinter group of the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal. SAD(D) was formed in 1996 under the leadership of Kuldip Singh Wadala who would become the first president of the party. The party for a couple of years allied with various political parties across India that had similar platforms to challenges governments of certain issues. Ahead of the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, SAD(D) had re-merged with the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal again.

The Anandpur Sahib Resolution was a statement with a list of demands made by the Punjabi Sikh political party, the Shiromani Akali Dal, in 1973.

Baldev Singh

Baldev Singh was an Indian Sikh political leader, he was an Indian independence movement leader and the first Defence Minister of India. Moreover, he represented the Punjabi Sikh community in the processes of negotiations that resulted in the independence of India, as well as the Partition of India in 1947.

Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa Indian politician

Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa is a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. He is the President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) political party, which is formed by the merger of Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) and Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) lead by him and Ranjit Singh Brahampura respectively. He used to be a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) political party until tensions rose inside the SAD Political Party. Dhindsa started his political journey as an active student leader during his graduation years at Govt. Ranbir College Sangrur. He was the first elected Secretary of Ranbir College Students' Council and subsequently elected as the president of council too. After graduating he was elected as the Sarpanch of his native village Ubhawal in Sangrur district. Amongst the elected Sapanches he became the chairman of Block Samiti Sangrur. Later he was elected as Managing Director of District Cooperative Bank, Sangrur. In 1972 Dhindsa won Dhanaula Assembly Constituency seat as an independent candidate and later joined Shiromani Akali Dal under the guidance and motivation of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal. He again was elected as an MLA from Sunam on Shiromani Akali Dal ticket and inducted as Minister of State holding the portfolios of Transport, Sports, Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Civil Aviation. In 1980 he again was re elected to Punjab Vidhan Sabha from Sangrur seat. In 1985 he became MLA from Sunam. Later in 1986, differences brew in Surjit Singh Barnala's Government on the issue of Operation Black Thunder and Dhindsa choose to go with the faction of Parkash Singh Badal in retaliation to operation black thunder. He was previously a member of 14th Lok Sabha of India, representing the Sangrur constituency of Punjab. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in the awards list of 26 January 2019. However, he returned it in December 2020 during the farmer protests.

Politics in reorganised present-day Punjab is dominated by mainly three parties – Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). Since 1967, Chief Minister of Punjab has been predominantly from Jatt Sikh community despite its 21 percent state population. Only exception was Giani Zail Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab from 17 March 1972 to 30 April 1977 belonging to Ramgarhia community part of significant OBC community having population of 31.3 percent in the state. However Scheduled Castes (Dalit) community never had Chief Minister from community till 2021, as in September 2021 Chamkaur Sahib Mla Charanjit Singh Channi was appointed as Punjab's first Chief Minister from SC community. Other prominent party is Bahujan Samaj Party especially in Doaba region founded by Kanshi Ram of Rupnagar district. In 1992 BSP won 9 seats Vidhan Sabha elections. Also BSP won 3 lok sabha seats from Punjab in 1996 general elections and only Garhshanker seat in 1997 Vidhan Sabha elections. Communist parties too have some influence in the Malwa area. In the 2014 general elections, the first-time contesting Aam Aadmi Party got 4 out of 13 seats in Punjab by winning 34 of the total 117 assembly segments, coming second in 7, third in 73 and fourth in the rest 3 segments. The support for the Aam Aadmi Party increased in Punjab from 2014 to 2017 but declined in 2019. The current Government was elected in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections and the Congress won 77 out of 117 Assembly seats with Captain Amarinder Singh as the Chief Minister. Captain Amarinder Singh resigned on 18 September 2021 and Charanjit Singh Channi became the Chief Minister.

Balwant Singh Ramoowalia Indian politician

Balwant Singh Ramoowalia is an Indian politician from Samajwadi Party. His father Karnail Singh Paras was a well-known Kavishar. Balwant Singh started his political career with student politics as a general secretary of Student Federation of India in 1963. He went on to join All India Sikh Students' Federation and was its president from 1968-72. Later he joined Akali Dal and became Member of Parliament twice from Faridkot and Sangrur. He left Akali Dal to get elected to Rajya Sabha in 1996 and served as the Union Minister for Social Welfare. He formed his own political party Lok Bhalai Party that he merged into Akali Dal in November 2011. He contested for Punjab assembly in 2012 elections from Mohalli and lost.

Prem Singh Chandumajra Indian politician

Prem Singh Chandumajra is General Secretary and spokesman of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and former Member of Parliament from Anandpur Sahib and former constituency MP from Patiala seat. He is also an alumnus of Punjabi University, Patiala. He was a Member of Parliament in 11th, 12th and now of 16th Lok Sabha. Harsimrat Kaur Badal Indian politician

Harsimrat Kaur Badal is an Indian politician and a former Union Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Industries in the Government of India and Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from Bathinda. She is a member of Shiromani Akali Dal Party. Her husband Sukhbir Singh Badal is former deputy chief minister of Punjab and the president of Shiromani Akali Dal. She resigned from the cabinet on 17 September 2020 to protest against few farmer related ordinances and legislation.

Parminder Singh Dhindsa Indian politician

Parminder Singh Dhindsa is an Indian politician and belongs To The Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) Political Party. He was a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal until late 2019. He is currently MLA from Lehra and was leader of Shiromani Akali Dal Legislature group in Punjab Legislative Assembly until he quit. He was Minister for Finance & Planning (2012-2017) and Minister for Public Works (B&R) (2007-2012) in the previous Punjab Government. He is son of Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. He was first elected as MLA of Sunam in September 2000 by defeating Parmeshwari Devi of Congress during the By-Election. He was re-elected as an MLA for the fifth consecutive term in 2017 with his innings since 2000 to 2012 from Sunam and from 2017 onwards from Lehra Constituency onwards. He is triumphant in his entire career since 2000.

Shiromani Akali Dal Political party in India

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is a centre-right Sikh-centric state political party in Punjab, India. The party is the second-oldest in India, after Congress, being founded in 1920. Although, there are many parties with the name Akali Dal but the party recognised as "Shiromani Akali Dal" by the Election Commission of India is the one led by Sukhbir Singh Badal. It controls Sikh religious bodies Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and is the largest and most influential Sikh political party worldwide. The basic philosophy of Akali Dal was to give a political voice to Sikh issues and it believed that religion and politics go hand in hand but after 1996 the Moga Conference party adopted a moderate Punjabi secular agenda. On 26 September 2020, they left the NDA over the farms bill.

2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election Elections for the 15th Legislative Assembly of Punjab (India)

A Legislative Assembly election was held in the Indian state of Punjab on 4 February 2017 to elect the 117 members of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The counting of votes was done on 11 March 2017. The ruling pre-election coalition was the alliance comprising the political parties Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party and led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The voter turnout for the Punjab Assembly election was 77.2% The Indian National Congress led by former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh defeated the ruling alliance and the newcomer Aam Aadmi Party.

Jagdev Singh Talwandi Indian politician

Jagdev Singh Talwandi was an Indian politician. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1978 as a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-centered regional political party. Talwandi was elected SAD president in 1978 and 1988. He became the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in 2000. He was elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha thrice in 1967, 1969, and 1972, and was inducted as a Minister of State for Development and Animal Husbandry in the Gurnam Singh Ministry and the Minister of State for Jails, Sports and Transport in the Parkash Singh Badal government. He represented Punjab in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986.

2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly election Upcoming legislative assembly elections in the Punjab

The 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections will be held in February or March 2022, to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly elected in 2017 will expire on 27 March 2022 unless dissolved sooner.
