The festival's origins date to the Beaulieu Jazz Festival (1956–1961) which became the National Jazz Festival in 1961 and settled in Reading in 1971. In 1999 a second leg was added at Leeds.

The first leg of the tour consisted of thirteen shows in Europe, including a headlining appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival. American punk band X were the opening band for the arena shows. Due to high ticket demand for pre-sale tickets, the third-party website handling the sale had to be taken offline. The Pearl Jam fanclub cited "an act of sabotage" to the site. For the second show at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, a fan of the band created the setlist.

Jay Z and West performed the song at their 2011 Watch the Throne Tour.

The Global Citizen Festival is an annual music festival started in 2012 and organized by Global Poverty Project. It was founded by Ryan Gall and Hugh Evans. Gall said he was inspired by visiting Austin City Limits and seeing the branding on the stage, but wanting to replace the corporate branding with branding from charities.
The Meadows Music & Arts Festival was an annual music festival held at Citi Field in Queens, New York City. The festival was produced by Founders Entertainment, which also produces the Governors Ball Music Festival. The inaugural year of the festival, which was held on October 1–2, 2016, was headlined by several artists, including: Kanye West, J.Cole, Kygo, and Chance the Rapper. The festival boasted 42 artists and four stages: Linden Blvd., Queens Blvd., Shea, and The Meadows. The festival was inspired by the cancellation of Kanye West's set during the Sunday of the 2016 Governors Ball Music Festival due to heavy rains. It was announced on March 20, 2017 that the festival would return September 15–17, 2017. On May 8, 2017, the official lineup was announced, featuring headliners Jay-Z, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Gorillaz.
Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival is an annual American music festival and carnival curated by Tyler, the Creator and has been held annually since its inception in the fall of 2012, except from 2020 to 2022. The camp's name is an anagram of "Wolf Gang" and also spells "Golf Wang" in reverse. It features a variety of carnival games and rides, food vendors, and a myriad of notable artists. Prior to 2016, the festival had only been held for one day. It is always held on a weekend. There is no explicit date(s) on which Camp Flog Gnaw is held. However, past carnivals have been held at either the end of October or the middle of November.
