Goodlander attended Yale University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 2009 from Yale College as a history major, then Yale Law School, where she received her Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 2016. [2] As a student at Yale, she was a research fellow in Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Libya. [5]

After graduating from law school, Goodlander served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Merrick Garland of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 2016 to 2017 and Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court from 2017 to 2018. [2] [6]

Career

Goodlander began her career as a senior foreign policy advisor for Republican Senator John McCain. [7] Goodlander went on to serve as an intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve for over a decade. [8] In 2019, Goodlander was an associate attorney at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. [9]

Goodlander then served as Counsel to the United States House of Representative Committee on the Judiciary, where she helped develop the articles of impeachment against former U.S. President Donald J. Trump. [10] In 2023, Goodlander returned to New Hampshire as a solo practitioner, where she also served on the boards of the NH Women’s Foundation, NH Legal Assistance, the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire, and the Rudman Center Advisory Board. She also taught constitutional law at Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire. [11]

In 2021, after Merrick Garland assumed the office of U.S. Attorney General under President Joe Biden, Goodlander became Counselor to the Attorney General. From September 2022 to February 2024 Goodlander served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division. [12] In 2024, Goodlander also served as a senior advisor at the White House, where she led President Biden’s Unity Agenda for the Nation. [13]

Candidacy for Congress

Goodlander announced on May 9, 2024, that she would be running as a Democratic candidate for New Hampshire's 2nd congressional district in the 2024 United States House of Representatives elections in New Hampshire to succeed Representative Annie Kuster.

Goodlander, who owns a home in Portsmouth, NH, located in a different congressional district, rented an apartment in Nashua in order to run for the seat. [14]

She entered as the third Democrat in the race; five Republicans candidates also entered the race for the seat. [11]

Personal life

Goodlander is the wife of Jake Sullivan, U.S. national security advisor under President Joe Biden. They married in 2015 in New Haven, Connecticut, where former president Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended their wedding. In 2023, she gave birth to a stillborn son in a hotel; she has cited the experience as inspiring her to campaign for abortion rights. [1]
