Emily Elissa Randall [1] (born 1985) [2] [3] is an American politician and activist who is a member of the Washington State Senate from the 26th district. [4] A member of the Democratic Party,she was elected in 2018. [4]
Randall was born and raised on the Kitsap Peninsula. She graduated from Wellesley College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and women's studies. Her sister,Olivia,was born with severe developmental and physical disabilities. [5]
Alongside Senator Claire Wilson,she is one of the first two openly-LGBTQ women to serve in the Washington State Senate. [4]
Prior to serving in the senate,Randall worked as a community organizer,where she focused on issues related to public education and healthcare.
As senator,Randall has focused on increasing access to better behavioral and reproductive health,affordable housing,and public safety. [6] [7] She serves as whip for the state senate majority. [6] In March 2022,Randall sponsored a bill to lower the toll to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge by 75 cents. The bill was passed and took effect in October of the same year. [8]
Randall serves in the senate’s Higher Education committee,Workforce Development Committee,and on the Health and Long Term Care and Transportation committee. [9]
In 2018,Randall defeated Republican challenger Marty McClendon 35,087 to 34,983,a margin of 104 votes. [10]
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a pair of twin suspension bridges that span the Tacoma Narrows strait of Puget Sound in Pierce County,Washington. The bridges connect the city of Tacoma with the Kitsap Peninsula and carry State Route 16 over the strait. Historically,the name "Tacoma Narrows Bridge" has applied to the original bridge nicknamed "Galloping Gertie",which opened in July 1940,but collapsed possibly because of aeroelastic flutter four months later,as well as the replacement of the original bridge which opened in 1950 and still stands today as the westbound lanes of the present-day two-bridge complex.
Patricia Lynn Murray is an American politician who has served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate since 2023 and the senior United States Senator from Washington since 1993. A member of the Democratic Party,Murray served in the Washington State Senate from 1989 to 1993. She was Washington's first female U.S. senator and is the first woman in American history to hold the position of president pro tempore. State Route 16 (SR 16) is a 27.16-mile-long (43.71 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Washington,connecting Pierce and Kitsap counties. The highway,signed as east–west,begins at an interchange with Interstate 5 (I-5) in Tacoma and travels through the city as a freeway towards the Tacoma Narrows. SR 16 crosses the narrows onto the Kitsap Peninsula on the partially tolled Tacoma Narrows Bridge and continues through Gig Harbor and Port Orchard before the freeway ends in Gorst. The designation ends at an intersection with SR 3 southwest of the beginning of its freeway through Bremerton and Poulsbo. SR 16 is designated as a Strategic Highway Network (STRAHNET) corridor within the National Highway System as the main thoroughfare connecting Tacoma to Naval Base Kitsap and a part of the Highways of Statewide Significance program.
Susan Clair Lee is an American politician. She has served as the 72nd Maryland Secretary of State since 2023. Lulu Haddon was an American politician in the state of Washington.
