The Community of Portuguese Language Countries consists of nine member states [1] , which list the Portuguese language as an official language, and only East Timor and Equatorial Guinea list a secondary official language (Tetun and Spanish respectively).
In 2005, during the CPLP Council of Ministers meeting in Luanda, the status of associate observer for non-member states was adopted to enhance international cooperation and achieve the Community's objectives, leading to the subsequent admission of three states.

DomDuarte Pio, Duke of Braganza is the current Duke of Braganza, claimant to the title of King of Portugal of the dormant Portuguese throne, as the head of the House of Braganza. The Miguelist Braganzas, to whom Duarte Pio belongs as great-grandson of King Miguel I, is a cadet branch of the House of Braganza. With the extinction of male-line dynasts descended from Queen Maria II in 1932, King Miguel's descendants became the only male-line Braganzas remaining and the closest male-line heirs to the defunct Portuguese throne.
The Community of Portuguese Language Countries, also known as the Lusophone Community, is an international organization and political association of Lusophone nations across four continents, where Portuguese is an official language. The CPLP operates as a privileged, multilateral forum for the mutual cooperation of the governments, economies, non-governmental organizations, and peoples of the Lusofonia. The CPLP consists of 9 member states and 33 associate observers, located in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, totaling 38 countries and 4 organizations.

Having various sports departments and sporting disciplines, it is best known for its men's professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football.
Pedro Miguel de Santana Lopes is a Portuguese lawyer and politician, who is the current Mayor of Figueira da Foz. He most notably served as prime minister of Portugal from 2004 to 2005.

Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa is a Portuguese politician and academic. He is the 20th and current president of Portugal, since 9 March 2016. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party, though he suspended his party membership for the duration of his presidency. Rebelo de Sousa has previously served as a government minister, parliamentarian in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, legal scholar, journalist, political analyst, law professor, and pundit.
The Portuguese language is spoken in Asia by small communities either in regions which formerly served as colonies to Portugal, notably Macau and East Timor where the language is official albeit not widely spoken, Lusophone immigrants, notably the Brazilians in Japan or by some Afro-Asians and Luso-Asians. In Larantuka, Indonesia and Daman and Diu, India, Portuguese has a religious connotation, according to Damanese Portuguese-Indian Association, there are 10 – 12,000 Portuguese speakers in the territory.
The 2016 Portuguese presidential election was held on 24 January. This election chose the successor to the President Aníbal Cavaco Silva, who was constitutionally not allowed to run for a third consecutive term.
The 2014 Portugal legionellosis outbreak was an outbreak of legionellosis in multiple cities of the Lisbon district in Portugal, caused by the release of Legionella bacteria from the cooling towers of a fertilizer plant in Forte da Casa, Vila Franca de Xira. It began on 7 November 2014 and affected mostly people in Póvoa de Santa Iria, Forte da Casa and Vialonga, in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. Paulo Macedo, the Portuguese Health Minister, declared the outbreak extinct on 21 November. The outbreak resulted in 375 cases and 12 casualties.
Bruno Miguel de Azevedo Gaspar de Carvalho, known as Bruno de Carvalho, is a Portuguese businessman, sports commentator and DJ who was the 42nd president of sports club Sporting CP from 2013 to 2018. He became the first Sporting president to be dismissed by associates of the club, four months after being re-elected with 87% of votes.
Rita Rato Araújo Fonseca is a Portuguese politician, who was a member of the Assembly of the Republic from 2009 to 2019. She has a bachelor's degree in Political Science and International Relations from the New University of Lisbon and is a member of the Portuguese Communist Party.
The Liberal Initiative, often simply IL is a liberal political party in Portugal. Founded in 2017, it is currently led by Rui Rocha. The party sits on the centre-right of the political spectrum and has been described as being on the right-wing of the political spectrum by academics and journalists.
The 2021 presidential election was held in Portugal on 24 January. The incumbent President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was reelected for a second term.
Frederico Nuno Faro Varandas is a Portuguese medical doctor and former commissioned military captain of the Portuguese Army, who has been since 2018 the elected president of Sporting CP.
The XII Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP, commonly known as the 12th CPLP Summit was the 12th biennial meeting of heads of state and heads of government of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, held on the Ilha do Sal, in Cabo Verde, on 17–18 July 2018.
Early legislative elections were held on 30 January 2022 in Portugal to elect members of the Assembly of the Republic to the 15th Legislature of the Third Portuguese Republic. All 230 seats to the Assembly of the Republic were up for election.
The 2022 Portuguese Social Democratic Party leadership election was held on 28 May 2022. If no candidate achieved more than 50% of the votes in the first round, a second round would be held between the two most voted candidates in the first round on 4 June 2022, however, as only two candidates were on the ballot, Luís Montenegro and Jorge Moreira da Silva, a second round was not necessary.
Snap legislative elections will take place on 10 March 2024 to elect members of the Assembly of the Republic to the 16th Legislature of Portugal. All 230 seats to the Assembly of the Republic will be at stake.
On the morning of 28 March 2023, two Portuguese women belonging to the staff of the Ismaili Muslim Centre in Lisbon were stabbed to death. The alert was received by Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) at 10.57am and Abdul Bashir, an Afghan refugee enrolled at the centre, was arrested. A professor of Portuguese for foreigners at the centre and a female Afghan refugee attending Portuguese language classes were threatened at knifepoint and injured. On 29 March, Luís Neves, the national director of the Polícia Judiciária ruled out terrorism citing no "minimum evidence" of radicalization attributing the stabbing to the perpetrator's "psychotic outbreak". But on 31 March, the Public Prosecution Service did not rule out terrorism as the motive of the crime, which as of May 2023 is still under investigation.
João Saldanha de Azevedo Galamba is a Portuguese economist and politician. A member of the Socialist Party, he served as Minister of Infrastructure in the XXIII Constitutional Government of Portugal, between January and November 2023.
