Elections to Newport City Council were held on 3 May 2012 [1] along with elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and United Kingdom local elections, 2012.
Newport City Council is the governing body for the city of Newport, one of the subdivisions of Wales within the United Kingdom. It consists of 50 councillors, representing the city's 20 wards.
Councillors elected in this election will serve an extended five-year term, after local government minister Carl Sargeant announced the next elections would be moved from 2016 to 2017 to avoid clashing with the National Assembly for Wales election, 2016 which in turn had been delayed a year to avoid clashing with the United Kingdom general election, 2015. [2] The next full election took place on 4 May 2017.
Carl Sargeant was a Welsh politician who was the Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children in the Welsh Government. He represented the constituency of Alyn and Deeside in the National Assembly for Wales from 2003.
