Niobrarasaurus (meaning "Niobrara lizard") is an extinct genus of nodosaurid ankylosaur which lived during the Cretaceous 87 to 82 million years ago. Its fossils were found in the Smoky Hill Chalk Member of the Niobrara Formation, in western Kansas, which would have been near the middle of Western Interior Sea during the Late Cretaceous. It was a nodosaurid, an ankylosaur without a clubbed tail. It was closely related to Nodosaurus .

The type species, Niobrarasaurus coleii, was discovered and collected in 1930 by a geologist named Virgil Cole. It was originally described by Mehl in 1936 and named Hierosaurus coleii. It was then re-described as a new genus by Carpenter et al. in 1995. In 2002 the type specimen was transferred to the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Hays, Kansas. It has been estimated to be 5 meters (16 feet) in length and around 227–453 kg (500–1.000 lbs) according to Thomas Holtz. [4] Paul gave a higher estimation of 6.5 meters (21.3 ft) and 4 tonnes (8.800 lbs). [5]

Discovery and naming

The first remains of dinosaurs were discovered in the Niobrara Formation of Kansas by the excavations of American paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh, who worked in the area from 1870 to 1872. The first of these dinosaur remains were collected and returned to the Yale Peabody Museum where they were named Hadrosaurus agilis by Marsh in 1872, before being given the generic name Claosaurus in 1890. An ankylosaur was then discovered in 1905 by Canadian paleontologist Charles H. Sternberg, though they were originally identified as the scutes of a turtle. These scutes, and additional material of the skeleton, were identified as the remains of an ankylosaur by American paleontologist George Wieland, who named them Hierosaurus sternbergii in 1909. [1] The third discovery of dinosaurs in the Niobrara were found in the spring of 1930, where Virgil B. Cole excavated a large collection of bones and fragments, which were sent to the University of Missouri and accessioned as MU 650 VP. [1] [2] Cole wrote to American paleontologist Maurice Mehl about the finds on 25 February 1930, where he described the discovery as a baby due to its small size. [1] Many portions of the skeleton were articulated, and while most was weathered and broken into pieces, the ability to reassemble fragments led Mehl to believe that missing portions were scattered before burial. The skeleton of MU 650 VP includes most of the skeleton and armor, with parts of the skull and teeth, vertebrae from the cervical , dorsal , sacral , and caudal regions and their ribs, parts of the scapula and ilium , and bones from the forelimb and hindlimb . It was discovered in Gove County, around 11 mi (18 km) south of Hackberry, Kansas, around 195 ft (59 m) above the base of the Niobrara Formation within the Smoky Hill Chalk Member. [1] [2] When originally described, Mehl considered the material to represent a new species of ankylosaur, giving it the name Hierosaurus coleii. It was referred only tentatively to Hierosaurus, as while there were both similarities and differences between the two species of the genus, until additional material of ankylosaur showing clearly that more than one genus was present within the Niobrara Formation, considering all ankylosaurs from to represent a single genus was advisable. [2] Revisions of the ankylosaurs by American paleontologist Walter P. Coombs found Hierosaurus to be either an undiagnostic nodosaurid or a junior synonym of Nodosaurus , with his 1971 thesis renaming H. coleii as "Nodosaurus coleii" as H. sternbergii was considered dubious, and his 1978 revision of ankylosaur families simply listing Hierosaurus as a synonym of Nodosaurus. [6] [7] Coombs and Polish paleontologist Teresa Maryańska then considered Hierosaurus coleii to be a junior synonym of Nodosaurus textilis in 1990, with H. sternbergii as a dubious taxon. [8] American paleontologist Kenneth Carpenter and colleagues reviewed Hierosaurus in 1995, finding the type species H. sternbergii to be a dubious taxon based on inadequate material. As H. coleii was diagnostic, and lacked any features unique to it and Nodosaurus, Carpenter and colleagues named the new genus Niobrarasaurus for the species, with the genus named after the Niobrara Formation it was found in. Ankylosauridae is a family of armored dinosaurs within Ankylosauria, and is the sister group to Nodosauridae. The oldest known ankylosaurids date to around 122 million years ago and went extinct 66 million years ago during the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. These animals were mainly herbivorous and were obligate quadrupeds, with leaf-shaped teeth and robust, scute-covered bodies. Ankylosaurids possess a distinctly domed and short snout, wedge-shaped osteoderms on their skull, scutes along their torso, and a tail club.

Aletopelta is a monospecific genus of basal ankylosaurid dinosaur from Southern California that lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now the Point Loma Formation. The type and only species, Aletopelta coombsi, is known from a partial skeleton preserving osteoderms. It was originally described in 1996 by W. P. Coombs, Jr. and T.A. Deméré before being named in 2001 by Tracy Ford and James Kirkland. Aletopelta has an estimated size of 5 metres and weight of 2 tonnes. The holotype formed a miniature reef and was scavenged upon by invertebrates and sharks.

<i>Panoplosaurus</i> Extinct genus of dinosaurs

Panoplosaurus is a genus of armoured dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada. Few specimens of the genus are known, all from the middle Campanian of the Dinosaur Park Formation, roughly 76 to 75 million years ago. It was first discovered in 1917, and named in 1919 by Lawrence Lambe, named for its extensive armour, meaning "well-armoured lizard". Panoplosaurus has at times been considered the proper name for material otherwise referred to as Edmontonia, complicating its phylogenetic and ecological interpretations, at one point being considered to have existed across Alberta, New Mexico and Texas, with specimens in institutions from Canada and the United States. The skull and skeleton of Panoplosaurus are similar to its relatives, but have a few significant differences, such as the lumpy form of the skull osteoderms, a completely fused shoulder blade, and regularly shaped plates on its neck and body lacking prominent spines. It was a quadrupedal animal, roughly 5 m (16 ft) long and 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) in weight. The skull has a short snout, with a very domed surface, and bony plates directly covering the cheek. The neck had circular groups of plates arranged around the top surface, both the forelimb and hindlimb were about the same length, and the hand may have only included three fingers. Almost the entire surface of the body was covered in plates, osteoderms and scutes of varying sizes, ranging from large elements along the skull and neck, to smaller, round bones underneath the chin and body, to small ossicles that filled in the spaces between other, larger osteoderms.

<i>Pawpawsaurus</i> Extinct species of reptile

Pawpawsaurus, meaning "Pawpaw Lizard", is a nodosaurid ankylosaur from the Cretaceous of Tarrant County, Texas, discovered in May 1992. The only species yet assigned to this taxon, Pawpawsaurus campbelli, is based on a complete skull from the marine Paw Paw Formation.

Palaeoscincus is a dubious genus of ankylosaurian dinosaur based on teeth from the mid-late Campanian-age Upper Cretaceous Judith River Formation of Montana. Like several other dinosaur genera named by Joseph Leidy, it is an historically important genus with a convoluted taxonomy that has been all but abandoned by modern dinosaur paleontologists. Because of its wide use in the early 20th century, it was somewhat well known to the general public, often through illustrations of an animal with the armor of Edmontonia and the tail club of an ankylosaurid.

Glyptodontopelta is a monospecific genus of nodosaurid dinosaur from New Mexico that lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now the Naashoibito member of the Ojo Alamo Formation. The type and only species, Glyptodontopelta mimus, is known from numerous specimens that consist of osteoderms, a dentary, supraorbital and bone fragments. It was named in 2000 by Tracy Ford. Edmontonia australis is a junior synonym of Glyptodontopelta.

Priconodon is an extinct genus of ankylosaurian dinosaur, mainly known from its large teeth. Its remains have been found in the Aptian-Albian age Lower Cretaceous Arundel Formation of Muirkirk, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA and the Potomac Group, also located in Maryland. As an ankylosaur, Priconodon would have been a large armored quadrupedal herbivore, though no size estimation has been done due to the scarcity of described remains.

Priodontognathus was a genus of ankylosaurian dinosaur possibly from the Oxfordian-age Upper Jurassic Lower Calcareous Grit of Yorkshire, England. It is a dubious genus based on a maxilla, and has been erroneously mixed up with iguanodonts and stegosaurs.

This timeline of ankylosaur research is a chronological listing of events in the history of paleontology focused on the ankylosaurs, quadrupedal herbivorous dinosaurs who were protected by a covering bony plates and spikes and sometimes by a clubbed tail. Although formally trained scientists did not begin documenting ankylosaur fossils until the early 19th century, Native Americans had a long history of contact with these remains, which were generally interpreted through a mythological lens. The Delaware people have stories about smoking the bones of ancient monsters in a magic ritual to have wishes granted and ankylosaur fossils are among the local fossils that may have been used like this. The Native Americans of the modern southwestern United States tell stories about an armored monster named Yeitso that may have been influenced by local ankylosaur fossils. Likewise, ankylosaur remains are among the dinosaur bones found along the Red Deer River of Alberta, Canada where the Piegan people believe that the Grandfather of the Buffalo once lived.
