Orange Creek is a rural locality in the Shire of Banana, Queensland, Australia. [2] In the 2021 census, Orange Creek had a population of 197 people. [3]

Geography

The locality is bounded to the east by the Burnett Highway and to the south-west by the Dawson Highway. [4]

The Moura railway line enters the locality from the north-east (Jambin) and exits to the south-east (Banana). There are no railway stations on the line within the locality. [4]

The land use is a mixture of grazing on native vegetation and crop growing. [4]

The locality presumably takes its name from the watercourse Orange Creek which flows through the locality. [5]

History

Coreen State School opened on 23 August 1933 and closed in 1951. [6] It was on Prospect Creek Goovigen Road (approx 24°19′55″S150°24′03″E / 24.3319°S 150.4009°E / -24.3319; 150.4009 (Coreen State School (former)) ). [7] It takes its name from the local parish name. [8]

Greycliffe State School opened on 11 November 1935. It closed on 17 December 1993. [6] It was on the corner of Belldeen Greycliffe Road and Prospect Creek Goovigen Road ( 24°15′58″S150°21′22″E / 24.2661°S 150.3562°E / -24.2661; 150.3562 (Greycliffe State School (former)) ), now within Orange Creek. [9] [4]

Demographics

In the 2016 census, Orange Creek had a population of 212 people. [10]

In the 2021 census, Orange Creek had a population of 197 people. [3]

Education

There are no schools in Orange Creek. The nearest government primary schools are Prospect Creek State School in neighbouring Prospect to the south, Biloela State School in Biloela to the south-east, and Jambin State School in neighbouring Jambin to the north-east. The nearest government secondary school is Biloela State High School in Biloela. [11]
