The principal staff officer, abbreviated as PSO, is the head of the Armed Forces Division, a ministry level joint forces headquarters under Chief Adviser's office. It acts as the high command of the national armed forces. It is currently held by a three-star rank lieutenant general.

Role and functions

The principal staff officer is the head of Armed Forces Division, which is part of the Chief Adviser's office. He is assisted by a PS (acting PSO) and five departmental heads each one star rank military officer from Bangladesh Armed Forces. [1]

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Chief Adviser he has the authority, direction, and control over all operational and administrative services. He also, as per government notification, performs the duties of a full-fledged secretary with full administrative and financial authority as that of a secretary in any other division or ministry.

The role of advisement is also extended to the elected members in the bicameral Parliament and the Ministry of Defence. The Chairman leads the meetings and coordinates the combined efforts of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (JCSC), comprising the Chairman, the Chief of the Army Staff and Chief of the Air Staff and the Chief of the Naval Staff, Commandant of Marines, DG Coast Guards and Strategic Plans Division, and commanders of the service branches in the Civil Armed Forces and the National Guard.

Mohammad Ataul Gani Osmani was a Bangladeshi military officer and revolutionary. His military career spanned three decades, beginning with his service in the British Indian Army in 1939. He fought in the Burma Campaign during World War II, and after the partition of India in 1947, he joined the Pakistan Army and served in the East Bengal Regiment, retiring as a colonel in 1967. Osmani joined the Provisional Government of Bangladesh in 1971 as the commander-in-chief of the nascent Bangladesh Forces. Regarded as the founder of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, Osmani retired as the first full general from the Bangladesh Army in 1972.

Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of Bangladesh Army, also known as Army Chief, is the commander of the Bangladesh Army. The Chief of Army staff has been a four-star rank since 2007. Prior to that, the Chief of Army Staff was a three-star rank from 1978 to 2007. During the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, Maj. Gen. M. A. Rab was the Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Army under the combined command of Bangladesh Forces which served as the origins of Bangladesh Armed Forces and General M. A. G. Osmani was the Commander-in-Chief. After the War of Independence, Bangladesh Army was officially reverted to the Ministry of Defense in 1972, and Maj. Gen. K. M. Shafiullah was appointed the Chief of Army Staff. The incumbent Chief of Army Staff is General Waker-uz-Zaman.

Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Army general who was 11th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 16 June 2002 to 15 June 2005. He was the last officer to serve in this position who had first been commissioned by and served with the Pakistani Army, before the Liberation War of 1971. He served for two years before the war.

The National Security Intelligence, commonly known as the NSI, is the principal civilian intelligence agency of Bangladesh. The NSI's headquarters is in Segunbagicha, Dhaka. The NSI is the leading body of the Government of Bangladesh in the field of internal security, counter terrorism, counter intelligence and foreign intelligence. NSI is the largest among the intelligence agencies in Bangladesh, the others being the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), SB, CID, PBI and intelligence directorates of armed and paramilitary forces. He served as general officer commanding of two divisions: the 24th Infantry Division and the 55th Infantry Division. He retired from the army in 2012, after serving as army chief.

Prior that, he was the General Officer Commanding of 66th Infantry Division & Area Commander, Rangpur Area. He served as the Director General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).
