SNDT Women's University, also called by its full name Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, is a women's university in the city of Mumbai, India. The university headquarters are at Churchgate in South Mumbai, while the main campus is at Churchgate there are two other campuses one in SantacruzJuhu area of Mumbai and another at Pune. The university has affiliated colleges in Maharashtra, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Surat and Goa, as well. [2] Dhondo Keshav Karve played a key role in its establishment. He was inspired by novel on Japan Women's University in 1915.

History

In 1920 the university was named Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University. Mr.Vitthaldas Thakarsey pledged ₹1500000 at that time in the memories of his beloved mother Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thakarsey, and so the name SNDT was given to the university. [3] The money was never completely paid. [4] Today, the university has an enrolment of over 70,000 students. It has three campuses at Churchgate, Santacruz-Juhu, Pune. [5]

Dhondo Keshav Karve, popularly known as Maharshi Karve, was a social reformer in India in the field of women's welfare. He advocated widow remarriage and he himself married a widow. Karve was a pioneer in promoting widows' education. He founded the first women's university in India, the SNDT Women's University in 1916. The Government of India awarded him with the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1958, the year of his 100th birthday. He organized a conference against the practice of devdasi. He started 'Anath balikashram' an orphanage for girls. His intention was to give education to all women and make them stand on their own feet. Through his efforts, the first women university was set up in 20th century.

Raghunath Dhondo Karve was a professor of mathematics and a social reformer from Maharashtra, India. He was a pioneer in initiating family planning and birth control for masses in Mumbai in 1921.

Janaki Devi Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JDBIMS) is a business school exclusively for women. It is affiliated to SNDT Women's University, Mumbai. It started at the SNDT campus in New Marine Lines at Mumbai. Presently the institute runs from a Juhu campus. It offers Master in Management Studies (MMS) in business management, equivalent to an MBA degree. The institute offers other short-term courses related to business and management.

Saloni Aswani is an Indian actress and model who appears in Telugu and Kannada films. After finishing her education, Saloni ventured into modelling, appearing in various television advertisements. She went on to pursue a career in acting, debuting in the Hindi film Dil Pardesi Ho Gayaa (2003), following which she starred in several Telugu films, failing to achieve notable commercial success. She gained notice through her performances in Buddhivantha and S. S. Rajamouli's Maryada Ramanna (2010), leading to roles in further major Telugu productions.

Modern education was introduced to Maharashtra region during the 19th century by British colonial administration. Census of 2011 showed literacy rates in the state for males and females were around 78% and 67% respectively. Education at different levels in the state is provided by the state, government supported charities, or private institutions. There are also a number of institutes offering vocational training.

SNDT Pune campus is a constituent campus of the Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University (SNDT) located in Pune, India. The university was founded in 1916 in the Karve Kutir.

Sir Vithaldas Damodar Thackersey was an Indian businessman from Bombay state and was a member of Imperial Council of India during the 1900s.

Trupti Desai is an Indian social activist and the founder of the Bhumata Brigade & Bhumata Foundation, a Pune-based organization. Desai has campaigned for allowing women to religious places like the Shani Shingnapur Temple, the Haji Ali Dargah, the Mahalakshmi Temple, and the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple, all in Maharashtra, and most recently the Sabarimala temple in Kerala. In 2012, she was an Indian National Congress candidate for the Pune Municipal Corporation elections. In 2021, she participated in Bigg Boss Marathi 3 as a contestant and evicted on Day 49.

Anant Ramachandra Gokhale was an educationalist. In 20th century India, many great personalities walked in multifaceted fields of Indian society. Diwan Bahadur Krishnalal Mohanlal Jhaveri was an Indian writer, scholar, literary historian, translator, and judge from what is now Gujarat, India. His works have been published in Gujarati, English, and Persian. Jhaveri served as president of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad from 1931 to 1933.
