St. John Hospital (SJH) is a community hospital on the island of Cheung Chau,Hong Kong. It provides primary,emergency,and community health services.
St. John Hospital was founded as a tuberculosis sanatorium in November 1934 by the Hong Kong St. John Ambulance Association as the St. John Ambulance Association Haw Par Hospital,named after its donors:tycoon brothers Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par. The foundation stone of the Victorian-style hospital was laid by the two businessmen in 1932. The name "Haw Par Hospital" remains visible at the hospital's entrance,despite it being known now as St. John Hospital. [1] [2]
Before the opening of the St. John Hospital,residents of Cheung Chau sought medical care from The Cheung Chau Fong Bin Hospital,which offered traditional Chinese medicine. [3] Since the closure of the Fong Bin Hospital in 1988, [3] St. John Hospital has been the island's sole hospital.
The hospital has been listed as a Grade III historic building since 22 January 2010. [4]
As at March 2013,the hospital has 87 beds and 113 full-time equivalent staff. [5]
The hospital provides services for about 12,000 residents of Cheung Chau. [6] Those services include:

Haw Par Mansion,better known for its public gardens known as Tiger Balm Garden or Aw Boon Haw Garden,was a mansion and gardens located at 15,Tai Hang Road,Tai Hang,Wan Chai District,Hong Kong. The Tiger Balm Garden was demolished for redevelopment in 2004. The Haw Par Mansion and its private garden have been preserved.

The Antiquities Advisory Board (AAB) is a statutory body of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with the responsibility of advising the Antiquities Authority on any matters relating to antiquities and monuments. Before the dismantle,the key position of the business empire was served by third-generation member and their spouse,which they were removed after the takeover. However,Sally Aw,granddaughter of Aw Chu Kin,remained as one of the influential media tycoon in Hong Kong in 1990s,until forced to sell her Sing Tao Holdings in 1999 due to financial difficulties.
