St. Mary's (also known as St. Mary's Ridge) is an unincorporated community in the town of Jefferson in Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States. [2]
St. Mary's was first settled in 1856 by families who had immigrated to America from Stommeln, northwest of Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Those families thrived and branched-out through emigration to other States –notably to: Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, California, and other Wisconsin counties. In 2007, a 500-page book was published (privately) by the "St. Mary's Ridge Heritage Project," Cashton, Wisconsin, entitled: "St. Mary's Ridge Heritage –Histories of Our Pioneers." A second, revised edition is planned (circa 2009). Photos of St. Mary's were once selected for use within an official White House pamphlet, as "one of America's most beautiful places," by former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson wife of former United States President Lyndon B. Johnson. [3]

The county's name is derived from the family name of the Barons of Baltimore, the proprietors of the English Colony of Maryland Calvert County is included in the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria, DC–VA–MD–WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. It occupies the Calvert Peninsula, which is bordered on the east by Chesapeake Bay and on the west by the Patuxent River. Calvert County is part of the Southern Maryland region. Mary Bullman Sands was an American singer of old traditional ballads during the early part of the 20th century. She was known locally as "Singing Mary" due to her singing talent and extensive knowledge of the words and melodies of many old-time traditional songs that had been passed down through previous generations. In 1916, English folklorist Cecil Sharp visited Madison County to collect and record traditional folk songs being sung in America that would have originated generations earlier in the British Isles. Sands sang 25 songs for him, 23 of which he included in his book, English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians.
Pleasant Ridge is a former community in the Town of Beetown, Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. Settled c. 1850 by a family of formerly enslaved African Americans from Fauquier County, Virginia, Pleasant Ridge was a rural community with a significant population of formerly enslaved people and their descendants. The community declined in the 20th century, and the last African-American resident died in 1959.
