V. M. Girija (born 27 July 1961) is an Indian poet and essayist, writing in Malayalam language. She has published a number of books, which include Prem - Ek Album, the Hindi translation of her poetry anthology in Malayalam, Pranayam Oralbum. Kerala Sahithya Akademi awarded her their 2018 annual award for poetry and she is a recipient of 'Changmpuzha Award for literature' and the 'Basheer Amma Malayalam Puraskaram'.

Biography

VM(Vatakkeppattu Manakkal) Girija was born on July 27, 1961, to Vadakkeppattu Vasudevan Bhattathirippad and Gauri, at Paruthipra, a village near Shornur in Palakkad district in the south Indian state of Kerala. [1] [2] Her college education was at the Sanskrit College, Pattambi from where she earned a master's degree in Malayalam, standing first rank in the examination. She started writing at an early age and her early poems were published in Balapankthi of Mathrubhumi. She started her career in 1983 by joining All India Radio as an announcer and moved to Kochi FM Station when it was started in 1989. [3] [4] She retired from Kochi FM in 2021 after 38 years of service. [5] [6]

Girija has published ten books of which Pranayam Oralbum [7] has been translated into Hindi by A. Aravindakshan, under the title, Prem-Ek Album. [8] The other books are Jeevajalam (Current Books, 2004), [9] Paavayunu (Sign Books, 2007), [10] Pennugal Kanatha Pathira Neragal (Mathrubhumi Books, 2011), [11] Oridathoridathoridathu (Current Books, 2012), [12] Poochayurakkam (KSCIL, 2014), Kadaloraveedu (Logos Books, 2015), [13] Paavayoonu (Illustrated Version-Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, 2015), Irupakshampeduminduvalla Njan, Moonu Deerkha Kavithakal(DC Books, 2017) [14] , Buddhapoornima, and The Black Stone, a translation of her poems into English by P. P. Raveendran. [15] She has also edited book, Ellaarudeyum bhoomi, a compilation of poems of Savithri Antharjanam. [16] She has translated a bokk from Japanese ( through English) Panchara Orange maram. She has received Kerala Sahithya Academi Award for poetry in 2018. She has received the Changampuzha Award for literature [1] and one of her books is a prescribed academic text for graduate course in Malayalam at the University of Calicut. [17]

Girija is married to C. R. Neelakandan, a noted environmental activist. The couple has two daughters, Ardra Neelakandan Girija and Archa Neelakandan Girija and the family lives in Kakkanadu in Kochi. [1]

Awards and honours

Girija received the 2018 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry for her anthology, Budha Purnima. [18] [19] She has also received the 'Changmpuzha Award for literature' and the 'Basheer Amma Malayalam Puraskaram'. [20]

He was a recipient of several honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry, Vayalar Award and Odakkuzhal Award.

Sugathakumari was an Indian poet and activist, who was at the forefront of environmental and feminist movements in Kerala, South India. Her parents were the poet and freedom fighter Bodheswaran and V. K. Karthiyayini Amma, a Sanskrit scholar. She was the founder secretary of the Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi, an organisation for the protection of nature, and of Abhaya, a home for destitute women and a day-care centre for the mentally ill. She chaired the Kerala State Women's Commission. She played a prominent role in the Save Silent Valley protest.

Olappamanna Mana Subramanian Namboothirippad, better identified by his family name, Olappamanna , was an Indian poet of Malayalam literature. A former chairman of Kerala Kalamandalam and an author of 20 books of poetry, his poems were noted for their explicit social expressions. He received two awards from Kerala Sahitya Academy and another from Kendra Sahitya Academy, besides honours such as Government of Madras Poetry Prize, Odakkuzhal Award, N. V. Puraskaram, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram and Ulloor Award.

V. Madhusoodanan Nair is an Indian poet and critic of Malayalam literature, who is credited with contributions in popularizing poetry through recitation. He is best known for Naranathu Bhranthan, the poem with the most editions in Malayalam literature as well as his music albums featuring recitations of his own poems and poems of other major poets. Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with their annual award for poetry in 1993. He is also a recipient many other honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, Padmaprabha Literary Award, Kunju Pillai Award, R. G. Mangalom Award, Souparnikatheeram Prathibhapuraskaram and Janmashtami Puraskaram.

C. R. Neelakandan is an Indian environmental activist, politician and writer. A a regular contributor to Malayalam periodicals on environmental issues, Neelakandan is a former State Convener of Aam Aadmi Party Kerala.

The Kerala Sahitya Akademi awarded her their annual award for overall contributions in 1996.

Savithri Rajeevan is an Indian poet, short story writer and painter. One of the leading female writers in Malayalam, she has published four collections of poetry and a volume of short fiction.

Aryambika S. V. is a Malayalam language poet from Kerala, India. She received several awards including Yuva Puraskar by Sahithya Akademi and Kanakasree Award by Kerala Sahitya Akademi.
