V. M. Girija (born 27 July 1961) is an Indian poet and essayist, writing in Malayalam language. She has published a number of books, which include Prem - Ek Album, the Hindi translation of her poetry anthology in Malayalam, Pranayam Oralbum. Kerala Sahithya Akademi awarded her their 2018 annual award for poetry and she is a recipient of Changampuzha Award for literature, Basheer Amma Malayalam Puraskaram, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram and Mahakavi Pandalam Keralavarma Puraskaram.

Biography

Vatakkeppattu Manakkal Girija was born on July 27, 1961, to Vadakkeppattu Vasudevan Bhattathirippad and Gauri, at Paruthipra, a village near Shornur in Palakkad district in the south Indian state of Kerala. [1] [2] Her college education was at the Sanskrit College, Pattambi from where she earned a master's degree in Malayalam, securing first rank in the examination. She started writing at an early age and her early poems were published in Balapankthi of Mathrubhumi. She started her career in 1983 by joining All India Radio as an announcer and moved to Kochi FM Station when it was started in 1989. [3] [4] She retired from Kochi FM in 2021 after 38 years of service. [5] [6]

Girija has published eleven books of which Pranayam Oralbum [7] has been translated into Hindi by A. Aravindakshan, under the title, Prem-Ek Album. [8] The other books are Jeevajalam (Current Books, 2004), [9] Paavayunu (Sign Books, 2007), [10] Pennugal Kanatha Pathira Neragal (Mathrubhumi Books, 2011), [11] Oridathoridathoridathu (Current Books, 2012), [12] Poochayurakkam (KSCIL, 2014), Kadaloraveedu (Logos Books, 2015), [13] Paavayoonu (Illustrated Version-Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, 2015), Irupakshampeduminduvalla Njan, Moonu Deerkha Kavithakal (DC Books, 2017), [14] Buddhapoornima, and The Black Stone, a translation of her poems into English by P. P. Raveendran. [15] She has also edited book, Ellaarudeyum bhoomi, a compilation of poems of Savithri Antharjanam, [16] and has translated the Portuguese novel, Meu Pé de Laranja Lima (English: My Sweet Orange Tree) into Malayalam under the name, Ente Panchara Orange Maram. [17]

Personal life

Girija is married to C. R. Neelakandan, a noted environmental activist. The couple has two daughters, Ardra Neelakandan Girija and Archa Neelakandan Girija and the family lives in Kakkanadu in Kochi. [1]

Awards and honours

Girija received the 2018 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry for her anthology, Budha Purnima. [18] [19] She has also received the 'Changmpuzha Award for literature' and the 'Basheer Amma Malayalam Puraskaram' [20] and one of her books is a prescribed academic text for graduate course in Malayalam at the University of Calicut. [21] She received Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram in 2024 [22] and Mahakavi Pandalam Keralavarma Puraskaram in 2025. [23] [24] [25]

After completing his master's in Malayalam literature from Government Sanskrit College, Pattambi, he entered the collegiate education service as a lecture and worked in various government colleges across Kerala. He joined the faculty of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, in 1991 and retired from University's School of Letters in 2006.

Attoor Ravi Varma was an Indian poet and translator of Malayalam literature. One of the pioneers of modern Malayalam poetry, Ravi Varma is a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation, besides many other honours. The Government of Kerala honoured him with their highest literary award, the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, in 2012 and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi inducted him as their distinguished fellow in 2017.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri</span> Indian poet (1939–2021)

Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri was an Indian writer and scholar of Malayalam literature. Known primarily for his poems, Namboothiri also contributed to other genres such as essays, translations and children's literature. Swathanthrathe Kurichu Oru Geetham, Bhoomigeethangal, Indiayenna Vikaaram and Charulata count among his notable works. The Government of India honored him with the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri in 2014 and the Government of Kerala awarded him the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram, the highest literary award in Malayalam, the same year. He was also a recipient of Vayalar Award, Vallathol Award, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions, Asan Prize, Sahitya Akademi Award and Odakkuzhal Award.

V. Madhusoodanan Nair is an Indian poet and critic of Malayalam literature, who is credited with contributions in popularizing poetry through recitation. He is best known for Naranathu Bhranthan, the poem with the most editions in Malayalam literature as well as his music albums featuring recitations of his own poems and poems of other major poets. Kerala Sahitya Akademi honoured him with their annual award for poetry in 1993. He is also a recipient many other honours including Sahitya Akademi Award, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, Padmaprabha Literary Award, Kunju Pillai Award, R. G. Mangalom Award, Souparnikatheeram Prathibhapuraskaram and Janmashtami Puraskaram.

C. R. Neelakandan is an Indian environmental activist, politician and writer. A a regular contributor to Malayalam periodicals on environmental issues, Neelakandan is a former State Convener of Aam Aadmi Party Kerala.

Asan Memorial Poetry Prize or Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram is a literary award instituted in 1985 by Madras-based Asan Memorial Association in memory of Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan. It is given annually to honour outstanding poets in Malayalam language. The award comprises a purse of Rs 50000, sculpture and certificate. The award was also conferred to Tamil writers in the initial years.

The O. V. Vijayan Sahitya Puraskaram or O. V. Vijayan Literary Award is instituted by the Naveena Samskarika Kala Kendram, Hyderabad, in memory of Malayalam novelist and cartoonist O. V. Vijayan who had spent his last days in Secunderabad. The award consists of a cash component of ₹50,001, a memento by Kanayi Kunhiraman, and a citation. The award is given to the best book in Malayalam language during the year.

V. M. Devadas is a Malayalam novelist, short story writer and screenwriter from Wadakkancherry, Kerala, India.

Padmaprabha Literary Award for contributions to the field of Malayalam literature is instituted by the Padmaprabha Foundation. A prestigious literary prize in Malayalam, the award was instituted in memory of freedom fighter and socialist Padmaprabha. It carries a purse of Rs 75,000, a gem-studded ring and plaque. The awards are announced every year.

Cherukad Award is an annual award given for literary works in Malayalam. The award was instituted in 1978 by Cherukad Smaraka Trust at Perinthalmanna, Kerala, India. It is named after Malayalam playwright, poet, novelist, and political activist Cherukad Govinda Pisharodi. The award comprises ₹25,000 and a citation.

Abu Dhabi Sakthi Award is a literary award instituted by UAE-based Abu Dhabi Sakthi Theatres and awarded to writers in Malayalam literature. Instituted in 1987, it is given in various categories such as novel, story, poetry, drama, literary criticism, scholarly literature and children's literature. The award for literary criticism is named Sakthi Thayat Award, the award instituted for overall contributions is named T. K. Ramakrishnan Award, and the award for other categories of literature is named Sakthi Erumeli Award.
