Valle de Güímar is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located along the south-eastern coastline of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), and acquired its DO in 1996.

Geography

The vines are grown on the southern slopes of the Teide, a volcano, making it one of the highest winegrowing areas in Europe, between 175 m and 1,500 m above sea-level.

Soils

There are three types of soil in the DOP: the lower altitude soils are sandy, the middle reaches are pumice-based and the higher slopes are clay.

Climate

The climate in southern Tenerife is mild and temperate, with influence from the trade winds.

It was created with the specific purpose of providing commercial support to over 200 wineries (bodegas) that produced quality wine but which were not included in other specific DOP's in Catalonia. It does not have a specific geographical location but is formed by over 40 km² of individual vineyards which are dispersed all over Catalonia, and allows mixing of grapes from other DOPs.

Pla de Bages

Pla de Bages is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for Catalan wines, located in the province of Barcelona, and is one of the smallest DOPs in Spain, covering less than 500 hectares. It is also one of the newest having acquired its official status in 1997.

It is encompasses all of the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands also has ten individual DO's.
