Wellington Road (and Meechi Road at its south-eastern end) is a South Australian secondary road, connecting Mount Barker with the towns of Wistow, Highland Valley, Woodchester and Langhorne Creek. [3] Its north-western portion has been given the route designation of B37.

History

Wellington Road previously served as an early alignment of the Princes Highway some time after it was first declared in South Australia in February 1922, [4] initially defined along the route via now known as Strathalbyn Road from Adelaide via Aldgate, Mylor, Macclesfield, Strathalbyn, Langhorne Creek, crossing the Murray River at Wellington and then continuing along the present route beyond Meningie, [5] By 1928, the route was re-aligned to run through Mount Barker and along Wellington Road via Wistow and Woodchester to Langhorne Creek, [6] although by 1935 this alignment was changed to run via Nairne, Kanmantoo, Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend (along what is now known as the Old Princes Highway). [7]

Princes Highway Highway in Australia

The Princes Highway is a major road in Australia, extending from Sydney to Adelaide via the coast through the states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. It has a length of 1,941 kilometres (1,206 mi) or 1,898 kilometres (1,179 mi) via the former alignments of the highway, although these routes are slower and connections to the bypassed sections of the original route are poor in many cases.

The South Eastern Freeway is a 76 kilometre controlled-access highway in South Australia. It carries traffic over the Adelaide Hills between Adelaide and the River Murray, near Murray Bridge, connecting via the Swanport Bridge to the Dukes Highway which is the main road route to Victoria. It is often referred to by South Australians simply as the Freeway, as it was the first freeway in South Australia, and is still the longest, and the only one with "Freeway" in its name rather than "Expressway" or "Highway". It is a part of the National Highway network linking the state capital cities Adelaide to Melbourne and signed as National Highway M1. The South Eastern Freeway includes 500-metre-long twin-tube tunnels in the descent towards Adelaide, the first of their kind on the National Highway. It is designated as the M1.

Division of Mayo Australian federal electoral division

The Division of Mayo is an Australian electoral division located to the east and south of Adelaide, South Australia. Created in the state redistribution of 3 September 1984, the division is named after Helen Mayo, a social activist and the first woman elected to an Australian University Council. The 9,315 km² rural seat covers an area from the Barossa Valley in the north to Cape Jervis in the south. Taking in the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island regions, its largest population centre is Mount Barker. Alexandrina Council Local government area in South Australia

Alexandrina Council is a local government area in the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island region of South Australia. The Alexandrina Council was formed on 1 July 1997 by the amalgamation of the District Council of Port Elliot and Goolwa, the District Council of Strathalbyn and a portion of the District Council of Willunga. The council is divided into five wards: Nangkita Kuitpo, Angas Bremer, Port Elliot Middleton, Strathalbyn and Goolwa Hindmarsh Island.

Fleurieu zone

Fleurieu zone is a wine zone located south of Adelaide in South Australia. It extends from Kangaroo Island in the west as far north as Flagstaff Hill on the west side of the Mount Lofty Ranges and to as far north as Langhorne Creek on the east side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. It consists of the following five wine regions, each of which has received appellation as an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI): Currency Creek, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and the Southern Fleurieu.

Langhorne Creek wine region

Langhorne Creek wine region is a wine region in South Australia that is located on the plains southeast of the town of Strathalbyn along the lower reaches of the Bremer River and Angas River to Lake Alexandrina. The region received appellation as an Australian Geographical Indication (AGI) in 1998 and as of 2014, has a total planted area of 5,883 ha and is represented by at least 24 wineries.

Belvidere is a small town in the Alexandrina Council area of South Australia. With the advent of improved transport, the town no longer has a school or post office. The Soldier's Memorial Hall was built in 1921 to commemorate the 17 young men of the district who served in World War I, five of whom did not return. It remains a part of the town and available for hire. It is located on the main road between Strathalbyn and Langhorne Creek near where the road to Milang branches off.

Sandergrove is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia about 9 km (5.5 mi) south of Strathalbyn. It was a junction on the Victor Harbor railway line, where the Milang railway line branched off. The railway was authorised in 1881 and closed in 1970.

Mount Barker Road

Mount Barker Road was once the main road from Adelaide through the Adelaide Hills to Mount Barker on the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The main route has now been replaced, or subsumed into, the South Eastern Freeway, but most of it remains in some form. The remaining sections of Mount Barker Road are still classified as state roads.

Gemmells is a locality in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. It lies between Mount Barker and Strathalbyn, both by road and on the Victor Harbor railway line.

Woodchester, South Australia Town in South Australia

Woodchester is a locality in South Australia, situated within the Alexandrina Council. It was originally a private subdivision, but was formally established in August 2000 for the long established name. A section of Woodchester was severed and added to Bletchley in October 2008.

Hundred of Strathalbyn Cadastral in South Australia

The Hundred of Strathalbyn is a cadastral division of the County of Hindmarsh in South Australia. It lies west of the Adelaide Hills and east of Lake Alexandrina and includes at its southwestern extremity the town of Strathalbyn. Its name is derived from that used for a sub-division granted in 1841. No definitive derivation for the subdivision of Strathalbyn name is known but it is deemed probable that John Rankine or his brother William provided the name with the meaning given as "white valley" from the Scottish srath and albion. Mount Barker Creek forms much of the northern hundred boundary while the Bremer River forms the eastern border.

The Alexandra and Eastern Hills Cricket Association (A&EHCA) is a cricket association in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island regions of South Australia. It is an affiliated association of the South Australian Cricket Association. The A&EHCA runs senior men's cricket competitions across five grades and junior competitions at the under 16, under 14, under 12 and under 10 age groups.
