The European green woodpecker is a member of the woodpecker family Picidae. There are four subspecies and it occurs in most parts of Europe and in western Asia. All have green upperparts, paler yellowish underparts, a red crown and moustachial stripe which has a red centre in males but is all black in females.

It is the second-largest woodpecker on the continent, after the critically endangered—and possibly extinct—ivory-billed woodpecker. The term "pileated" refers to the bird's prominent red crest, with the term from the Latin pileatus meaning "capped".

The stripe-cheeked woodpecker is a species of woodpecker endemic to Panama. The males are an orangish-brown above with an olive barred yellowish rump, an olive chest and throat with white spots, and dull yellow underparts. Its crown, nape and moustachial region is a bright red and it has a white streak on the lower cheek. Females are similar to the males, but have a dark grey crown and moustachial region. It is uncommon in humid forests in the Panamanian foothills. These woodpeckers are generally quiet and inconspicuous and forage either alone or in pairs in the low or middle level of trees.

Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge is a 35,000-acre (140 km2) National Wildlife Refuge established in 1939 and located in central Georgia. It is primarily an upland forest dominated by loblolly pine on the ridges with hardwoods found along the creek bottoms and in scattered upland coves. Clear streams and beaver ponds provide ideal wetland habitat for wood ducks and other wetland dependent species. In the early 19th century the European settlers arrived in abundance and began to clear the land to plant a variety of crops. The settlers removed more than 90% of the forest. The continuous planting of cotton caused serious erosion and soil infertility. By the late 1870s they had abandoned more than a third of the land because the land could not sustain crops.

The ivory-billed woodpecker is one of the largest woodpeckers in the world, at roughly 20 inches (51 cm) long and 30 inches (76 cm) in wingspan. It is native to types of virgin forest ecosystems found in the Southeastern United States and Cuba. Habitat destruction and, to a lesser extent, hunting have decimated populations so thoroughly that the species is very probably extinct, though sporadic reports of sightings have continued into the 21st century. The ivory-billed woodpecker, dubbed the "holy grail bird" due to its appearance and behavior, is the subject of many rediscovery efforts and much speculation.
